MattDLEA Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Hi , So we have got 100 ipads, waiting for me to unwrap and sort out. 20 are going to be for teacher use and the rest for 1:1 kids. I have heard different things about the ways to deploy. A Macbook with configurator to get he base setting then use a MDM to install new apps and remote manage them? I have not used or tested any but we are thinking about meraki ( because its free) but also the wi-fi push sounds like a better way to sync. We are then thinking about mybigcampus and dropbox for content sharing. Does anyone have a really basic set up guide or roll out plan? If we initially set up a base image with configurator then use maraki to install and update stuff would that be ok? Also what happens with Volume licensing basically we want to buy 100 copies of pages, put this on the ipad. After a year if some of the ipads are given to the kids we would like to remove the pages app and then reuse the license on a new ipad.

But as VPP licensing is changing from codes to licenses, it may be possible in the future

Bev Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Problem I'm havnig with Meraki (and I think it's the same with all of them), is that when you push out an App, a box pops up on the ipad and the Apple Id Password has to be entered. I assume if we did wired-syncing via a cart, that wouldn't happen?

I'd raise a ticket with their support and see if there is any workarounds, especially having to put the password in 100 times! Does the user have to enter the Apple ID password for every app installed? When Apps are deployed via MDM, Apple requires an Apple ID and password for the app to be installed. Apps downloaded and installed via Apple Configurator do not require entering an Apple ID and password, however, the iOS device has to be physically connected to the OS X device running Apple Configurator. With iOS 6, the device caches a users password for 15 minutes. If you install FREE apps in batches via Systems Manager with iOS 6, you will have to enter the password once instead of doing it for every single App. Paid apps redeemed via VPP redemption codes still require the user to enter a password for EVERY app. Devices running pre-iOS 6 will be required to enter a password for every app regards of whether it is free or paid

Profile Manager does NOT work with VPP....... Apps STILL require an Apple ID even for free apps..... You have to have the SAME Apple ID on EVERY iPad to enable you to accept the App, breaking App licensing rules.

I have a list of mostly-free-ish apps my vp gave me. Also I put "iTunes U" on them and picked a few titles about implementing iPads in education for the teaching staff (which includes me): Getting Started with iPad, Elementary Games (Perth Amboy Public Schools), Apps for the Classroom (Arkansas), Classroom Management with iPads (Palm Springs Unified), if you go through the K-12 listing on iTunes U, the state of Arakansas has basic textbooks listed. I also got iBooks and got he "iPad User Guide". I also spent 2 hours with an AppleTV device showing a bunch of teachers the above and setting up email, looking at Podcasts, Star Rover (cool GPS use here), Siri, Merriam Webster (say the work and it looks it up), setting up school email, installing apps (Sudoku) through app store which needed them to set up an iCloud account. I took Facetime off and went through Setting->General->Restrictions for no in app purchases and rating and locked it. I got a sync cart and macbookpro to set things up but I'm still in the first stages. In the article... "software preventing pupils from accessing inappropriate websites" I've installed the K-9 broswer app and will remove Safari "although they will be allowed to use sites such as Facebook and Twitter at home." Facebook is educational? anyway K-9 blocks facebook "tracking software to help police locate tablets which are lost or stolen." Find iPhone App works but with only 1 unit, still testing it out, unit has to be on though. "Parents ... are liable if they are lost or stolen due to negligence ... school has also taken out extra insurance."
