hi all i tried to a mate a favour this afternoon went round his place and he has had a load of cat5 cable put in by the electricians bascially it goes one from one room to another downstairs to upstairs and is terminated at each end with wall sockets. at the server end there is a wireless router with four ports and he wants to connect the downstairs sockets to the router so that he can put cables from the sockets upstairs to pcs and get a wired connection.

problem is when we did that we got no ip address although we can connect direct to router and get one so there must be something a miss with the cabling or we need a switch or something in between can any enlighten me i've looked to long at it and am going slowly mad.

You wont need a switch in the house. a router is enough.

 

do you know how big the cable run(s) are? cat5e should not be no more than 100m in length from machine too machine or in your case machine to router.

 

do you have a cable tester?

 

can you get an ip address from each port if connected directly to the router?

 

what router are you using?

You need to make sure that the cable is fully connected at the sockets. You can get a LAN cable tester, but they aren't that cheap.

If the router is set up to be a DHCP server, your best bet may be to use a patch lead to connect to the router from one of the sockets, then use another to connect to a laptop or PC at the other end. Set the machine to get an IP address via DHCP, this is normally the default.

If you don't get an IP address, I suspect that the sparky hasn't tested the connections after the install. Get him back to check it out.

thanks for the replys chaps:

the cable runs are less than 100 m

i have a cable tester and managed to get a almost (six out of eight lights lit upand it said i had a connection)decent connection on at least one of the sockets so used that as my tester.

the router is set to dhcp and is netgear

tried connecting patch cables to the router and then to a lappy at the top of the house.

didn't try static ip address

when i connect lappy it does not get dhcp ip address although when i connect same lappy direct to router it does so dhcp is fine and dandy.

yeah thats what i thought but laying cables particularly for sparkies is childs play whats the chances of him getting them all wrong ??

Try pushing the cabling in the sockets into their termination block again (dont remove just push it down further) you may find its not been pushed in enough. Check the wire is between the metal contacts.

A lot of electricians aren't skilled in the world of structured data cabling.

 

You see all those 8 coloured wires? Just stick 'em in that terminal block - any order! 8)

yeah thats what i'm starting to think webman although when i suggested that my mate didn't want to know and was adamament that they were ok i took my pinchers with me and checked the termination ends and to be fair it looked like a good job.

If you have a tester & have tested the patch cables & get the full eight lights, then they are fine.

You only need four cables to be connected correctly, but they must be the right four. Have a look at this link that FN-GreaterManchester pointed out:

You will notice that you only need 1, 2, 3 & 6 connected.

When you say you are getting 6 out of the eight, what six?

I would say you really want to make sure all eight are connected though. It just makes more sense & is not a bodge job.

If the data cabling is running too close to mains cabling for too great a length (2' i've found to be too long), that will kill the data signal. I would guess this is the most probable explanation.

That really shouldn't happen. The data cable is twisted and balanced to cancel induced interference, and mains (in most circumstances) has L & N in close proximity reducing EM fields. What were the circumstances in your case?
