The data cable is twisted to prevent interference from other network cabling...not mains voltage. Mains voltage is a bit much.

 

You also shouldnt run network cables parallel and in close proximity to flourescent strip lights.

I've had it several times Andrew. The office staff re-routed the network cable to the reception PC alongside a 4way trailing extension - actually cable tied them together for 2' to keep 'em tidy. No network. Cut cable ties - fine. Data cabling guidelines tell you to only cross mains cabling at right angles and never to run alongside.

can i ask a silly question how many cables are you connecting to this router and have you got any swith at all involved ie from the ends of cables upstaires all in switch and then switch into router and downstairs direct into router or all plugged direct into router. Also I know someone has probly asked but have you tried same pc at all points IE lappy or is it diffrent pc (some routers you can disallow or allow certian macs) ensure mac filtering is not on .
