It worked out cheeper and more powerful than the HP and Im very happy with the results. 2

FragglePete Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Definately HP over Netgear here as well. I've had nasty experiences of Netgear Managed switches along time ago, HP here has been rock solid. Lifetime Warranty as well. I know Netgear is great 'bang for buck' but give me HP anyday. Pete 1

IPSec authentication - GRE tunneling - BGP (IPv4) - BGP (IPv6) - ISIS (IPv4) - ISIS (IPv6) - MPLS - VPLS - Virtual Routing instances with IPv4 unicast and multicast support - Virtual Routing instances with IPv6 unicast and multicast support All your mentioned Netgear devices do have: OSPFv2 OSPFv3 There´s a reason, why I wouldn´t buy HP A5120-EI series nowadays any longer: It was released in 2008. That´s no problem at all as it still gets software updates. But you have to put in SFP+ slot modules before adding SFP+ LC modules which make them too expensive. Look at the HP 2920 switching series. For edge/access/POE it will be sufficient. As you bosses look at the money, you could of couse buy compatible SFP and SFP+ fiber modules. Your (official) HP partner will not sell you those, of couse, as they are not allowed to do it, as they would risk their HP partner status. Or look for "HP Renew" parts, which will also save really money and still give you HP´s favourite lifetime warranty (at least on the HP A5800, not the A5820 switches - yes, HP also likes you to pay for hardware warranty contracts on their higher spec switches) Edited May 23, 2013 by snoerre 1

If you move on they'll find it easier to get someone who knows HP than netgear. It has better debugging features (I don't know that for a fact as I don't really know the netgear, but the debugging features on A5120 and A5800 are significant). The HP has a lifetime warranty. 1

I agree. Try finding a highly experienced network,engineer who specialises in Netgear switches. Really, go do it. Good luck. The lack of support will be a big argument. The other argument is that you don't skimp and cheap out on your network. It's the foundation of all of your IT infrastructure. If your network doesn't work optimally, nothing else will work very well either. I would rather have cheap servers than cheap switches.
