Users have been logging on to some Win 7 machines without a problem for ages but now, whenever ANY user logs on, it logs them on with a temporary profile... This is only happening on 5 machines in our PPA room. A new switch has been added in there (managed) recently. Could it be that?

When I log on as a domain admin- it logs on without a problem...

Nobody is using roaming profiles.

Certainly sounds like the switch. Can you whack the old one back in for a short while just to check?

There is no old one :( They've been running without a hitch for ages- it's just in the last few days they've started doing this.

We've found that temporary profiles is usually caused by permissions issues. Have you tried checking permissions? Also try taking ownership and deleting the profile of a test user then logging on to see if that makes a difference.

This doesn't explain why it should suddenly start happening out of the blue though...? Our users don't have profiles stored on the server by the way.

I'm on a phone at the moment but do an advanced search here for a thread started by me called windows 7 temporary profile, the solution may be in there and is a bunch of registry keys to clean out.

What type of switch is it and can you read the log off it ? It could be some kind of loop or excessive broadcast somewhere stopping communication during log on if it isn't a software issue.

It's a Netgear GS724T. Log shows no errors.

Strangely even though this profile issue has occurred there are no network drive problems for the user...

I've cleaned the registry settings with no luck- it seems to be happening with all users who log onto those particular machines.

We've had that randomly on Toshiba tecra a11's. One tech suggested that when she removed the google toolbar from the offending machines they went right back to working with the normal profiles. I don't know if this is your problem or not but it might be worth checking out

Thanks for this suggestion. Checked it out and we don't have google toolbar installed so it can't be that

PROBLEM SOLVED!

After having a look at the Users folder and at the profile list in the registry settings (thanks Amanda) , I noticed that there were more profiles in the registry than there were in the Users folder. As we don't use roaming profiles i just deleted the keys (leaving the Administrator, User) and now when users log on- no temporary profile. The list was huge compared to the folders created in the users folder so something has gone wrong somewhere along the way.

I'll be monitoring it to see how it gets on but i feel this has fixed it.

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance.
