Windows GPP Printers Again!

Hi,

 

I know there is thread after thread for this and all the changes that are required are implemented, but im still not getting the resolution i need.

 

I have a Group Policy setup that consists of a number of mappings. The first setting is to delete all shared printers, then i map all other printers as update using ILT.

 

We have also added the RemovePrintersAtLogoff registry key as described in some posts.

 

The issue im seeing at the moment is that when the printers deploy but seem to follow the users around with their romaing profile. Its as if the delete all is not working. We can also set the default printer to something else, then on logon the GPP does not re-evaluate and users have the same default printer.

 

I know the GPP works as i can force it by GPupdate, then this will deploy the correct printers and set the correct default printer. Im not sure what else to do now?

I hate to say this but give up... use scripts or the older gpo method (what i do)

I'm assuming you're doing a policy per OU, with different printers per OU?

 

Could you have a delete record for each other printer in the policy that applies the correct ones? (might not be very graceful, but worth a test perhaps)

Do you have the gpo setting for prevent users from deleting printers on ?

that sounds like you're mapping printers in the user preferences rather than computer preferences? if so, there's the problem and the fix

thats right, im using the user preference rather than the computer preference. So are i need to use the computer preference instead, and map by IP address instead of share name?

Argh, ignore me. I was thinking the other way around. Had a bad day with printers! (not GPP related - that's one thing that does just work for us!) No, map exactly as you are doing. One thing we don't do, thankfully is roaming profiles so that's perhaps related.

We use roaming profiles and have a delete all at the start of the group policy preferences that seem to do the trick...

How have you done the delete all part of your group policy preference? We have a problem where the printers are allocated to machines but the users seem to manage to pic them up and they follow them around... thinking this might solve the problem

Here is a screenshot of the delete all, then how we add our printers. We use update rather than create.

Ensure that you have applied hotfix KB2748246 on all of your clients - it makes group policy preferences for printing so much more reliable.

We solved this problem with Data Synergy's PrintMAN tool. This let's us configure the default printer via GPO per workstation. We tried both logon scripts and the GPP approach but the results were pretty hit and miss. They offer a discounted price for schools.

Hi Simon, Yes we use item level targeting to add some of the printers for specific users\machines which works well. Since applying the printing hotfixes we have no issues at all with GPP for printing. Ed
