Today (following some advice) I downloaded latest FF and switched back WOW :-) Actually WOW :-) Makes Chrome seem Neanderthal when it comes to mem usage and speed :-) Simon PS I'm on XP - maybe not so noticeable on 7 but great for me!
3s-gtech Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 We have Firefox vs Chrome debates between us in the office - I've used Firefox for 11 years or so now and have never switched, even through the dark v4 etc days. My colleague loves Chrome. To be honest, Chrome hits more of the standards for html5, but I just like the way FF feels. Each to their own.

I've been using it since 0.7, I think, when it was called Phoenix (then called Firebird, then Firefox) and I have exactingly specific expectations for my tab behaviour, and it takes me ages to get it all set up every time I reformat - genuinely weeks of a niggling sense of something not being quite right. Chrome seems nice an' all, better than IE, and I really should use it now I have a Nexus 4, but... it's just not quite right. The biggest shame is that Opera resigned themselves to obscurity in the early days by charging (£30, was it?), as various versions of Opera have, at times, been massively better than anything else out there - gestures, speed, tab organisation...

You do know Safari was unsupported by apple and could have been affected by the bigger holes found in Safari after apple gave up on windows. I use chrome mostly as I gave up on FF years ago but I do have all the browsers installed for testing. FF does seem considerably faster now especially launching which was slow if you had Firebug etc installed. The UI is pretty ugly though and the default skin needs improvement although you can switch skins at least. Edited March 18, 2013 by ZeroHour

Dos_Box Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Switched to Chrome after Shaun gave ma a Chinese burn for using FF a couple of years back. TBH, FF had got bloaty, buggy and slow, but I had been using it since it's early days. I may have to go back and give it another chance.

So that got uninstalled and Firefox got updated. I must say, it's sleek, smooth and fast at the moment. I got so used to using Chrome's Omnibar that I can't live without it now, and Firefox's URL bar seems to be able to do it too (to a certain extent) so I'm happy.

As I remember it, Opera was always free but it used to display adverts at the top, unless you paid them for it. Of course, if you knew what you were doing, you could suppress the adverts without paying. I knew how to do this but paid up in any case; if I'm going to use anything, I'll pay for it. I've been using Opera since 1998 and I'll stick with it. Of course, I have lots of other browsers on my systems; Amaya, Chrome, Dillo, Firefox, Lynx and SeaMonkey and Lynx on all boxes, Konqueror and Galeon on Linux and IE and Safari on Windows. If you're a web developer, the more browsers you have the better. The differences in the engines can be surprising at times.

I just turn all that modern skin off mine and make it boring and retro much better and more functional I find Took me years to be convinced to leave IE behind and moved to FF and have stuck with it but do flit back to IE from time to time
