As per this forum, what do you do?

 

Currently we have a Powerpoint running through a small machine connected to a TV, but it's not very nice tbh.

navaho works well here, it does need a little bit of time setting up but once up and running its a lot nicer than powerpoint. the fact that you can display a variety of different content on one screen was a big draw.

A vote for Digital Signage here, it's free, works well, you can update from the web and it's never given us any problems.

 

If a member of staff gives us a Powerpoint to put on screen, we convert it to a Flash file using ISpring ,then upload the Flash file.

Agreed Xibo - free and Highly Scaleable. I used to have some Navaho media cat's and hated them with a passion.

Exactly my experience - I don't know if they do now but they never used to support Powerpoint and i was always having to convert presentations so that they could be displayed.

you can get those android usb powered hdmi stick computers and run it using something like novisign. I've not tried any of that.

 

if you purchase something get the Samsung magicinfo displays they are rock solid.

MagicInfo is very nice if you can afford it; we used it in my last school.

 

Where I am now, we use Digital Signage by Lobby Sign nice looking bit of kit and easy to drive. They run their own software. It has a form which you can type words into, chuck in an image for the background, or a video. There can be as many slides as you like. It's pretty idiot proof as you type it in directly on the box using a wireless keyboard. It doesn't run powerpoint, openoffice, etc although there is probably nothing to stop you doing so, as they are just XP boxes in a very nice slim case. They can be stand-alone (which we do) or you can network them and run vnc to do stuff on it.

Urgh... magic info showed so much promise...but Samsung bodged it so many times. Now using xibo....same features pretty much

We have 3 OneLAN boxes and they are pretty good, although they are expensive - well they were the last time I looked at replacing ours which are getting on a bit. They have been extremely reliable and apart from the odd PSU failure (they are external and cost £20 to replace) haven't let us done in the last 7 or 8 years.

Onelan. Pain if the mb fails. You have to pay £180 in repair as the software is tied to the mac address.

This is a great thread as I am currently looking at digital signage. I am currently using PADS by Anders and Kern which is good, but is an old version. The new version is brilliant but not sure I can afford it now.

 

I would avoid commercial screens purely because of the cost. My first screen cost less than £400 and is a basic Toshiba 32" bought about 4 years ago and is on 24/7 and I keep forgetting to switch it off during holidays. Commercial screens are a lot more money so I would just replace it if it goes wrong with another cheap one. The only reason I would consider a commercial screen would be for outdoor use.

The 32" I am looking at referenced in my last post is only £236.99 ex vat. The 40" version is £415.99

@fiza definitely a good find. Must admit to not looking at the link but is a good price and worth considering. Also not really sure what makes it so different to a consumer TV.

Thanks to BSF we were able to afford a planet estream system in our school for all media storage and it now comes with digital signage built in for free.

Its great and their support is brilliant Its not cheap for their system but when you take into account for what it does its not bad for the price.

We ran Xibo on a tv with a Revo3610 and it was pretty much rock solid, you can do all your schedules and special events without any problems but come September we get Planet estream under BSF too, cant wait.

We use a product called Freeway by Cameron Communications take a look Freeway Digital Signage, Digital SIgnage Displays, Digital Signage Solutions, Scotland

 

We found it very good and does everything we need.
