Joedetic Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Guys...I don't know if this is meant to be targeted advertising but it's not really school friendly!
SYNACK Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Have you run a full spyware check on your system as another member had a similar problem with NSFW ads and it turned out to be some sneaky little it of spyware the was substituting ads.
FreeWill Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I get them too, though only on this page - spyware free.
Joedetic Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 I could understand spyware if it was just me....John's getting them too. If it /is/ spyware it's a hell of a coincidence for us to get the same bit of spyware and the same ad imho.
FreeWill Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I presume with Google it's picking up words on the page and displaying an ad relevant to the word? Because 'gaydar' is in this thread, I'm getting not tasteful ads at the top of this page! On most other pages / threads on the site I get IT related ads.

Agreed, it looks like the ad providers have changed slightly as I am also getting ads that I have not had before, nothing NSFW yet but it looks like it is a possibility. Joedetic Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 In which case why did both me and John get gaydar ads on the homepage? (Please....no gay jokes...)
john Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 ooh Joes special he gets a side one I get a top one (again no jokes ) no spyware or owt on my machine so I think our ad providers need looking into as its defo NSFW!!!
Joedetic Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 Yeah....especially as my monitor can be seen from the hatch in the door (and I can't see if anyone's watching behind me.....woot bad desk positioning) which could get kids asking all sorts of questions lol. But on the plus side...everyone that comes to the hatch gets to see the edugeek wallpaper i have...I've actually had a few comments how nice it is.
Edu-IT Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) I block ads normally but have just unblocked them and refreshed a few times and have only got adverts for the Nintendo Wii. I agree though that perhaps the adverts should be filtered in some sort of way, if that is at all possible. Alternatively you could just use Firefox and block ads when you're at work to save yourself from having to answer any questions. Edit: My mistake. I thought these appeared on the same page as posts but I was wrong. I do get this ad when I view the homepage. Have to laugh, people actually pay to have these things on their phone? Lee_K_81 Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) Had it too, it's already been spotted and discussed here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/edugeek-net-site-problems/21276-gaydar-ads.html edit: Here is the real link i meant to put in: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/comments-suggestions/21224-ad-selection.html Edited June 25, 2008 by Lee_K_81
Joedetic Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 *cough* You just linked to the post you're posting in..........

ZeroHour Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 BTW there was another thread about this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/comments-suggestions/21224-ad-selection.html Steps have been taken to filter them but no there is not much control with google (categories etc) as the ad's are contextual but it takes a little for the system to get its accuracy up. See the other thread anyway and post ad's there for now.
Lee_K_81 Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 *cough* You just linked to the post you're posting in.......... Oh c'mon! It was late. Stop picking on me! ;-)
katem Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) Thats strange, I only get ads in firefox but not in IE7...must have turned them off somehow. I got ads for 'gay men' though when I looked at this thread in FF so must be linked to the thread text somehow Figured out why I don't get ads in IE7 - remembered i have this nifty bit of software installed that has an Ad blocker built in :-) along with some other useful little bits. http://www.ie7pro.com/ Edited June 25, 2008 by katem Lightbulb
ZeroHour Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I have added a large amount of sites to filter ads from but it looks like adsense has got much more silly over the years. Katem: I have ie7 pro installed but I have found stability issues with it. I would recommend disabling the crash recovery anyway as that helped me. 1
