Ad Selection

May be me being a bit picky but is there any way of being a bit selective of what ads the site uses?

 

Not a huge deal but I don't really think I want ads like the one attached flashing up alot if I am trying to say this is a professional development site!

 

Ok now you are going to say that the ads are generated based on my browsing history or the threads I have created...

Apparently it looks at the cookies already on your PC and selects the ads to suite the end user

The long and the short of it is we need the money. The holding ads we have from IDG don't earn us anything, and when we have no real ads to show the Google ones at least keep us ticking over. Hey, it's expensive looking after you guys!!

Yeah I have no problem with Ads. EduGeek is one of the few hallowed sites that is in my allow ad sites. It is just the type of ads.

And also remember it should get more accurate with the ad's as google has a bedding in time generally as there adsense bots have to do some index work also.

I will be monitoring it closely.

Its being filtered out as we speak. The joy of *automated* page analysis.

I also found there's a link to give 'feedback' to google on the bottom right of the link. If you click that you can then tell google the ad isn't relevant.

Only on certain ones but yeh every little helps. It should get more accurate soon.

I am finding that many of the Google ads are being filtered by RM SafetyNet Plus so aren't getting to me anyway. Although the one at the top as I write invites me to:

Yeh I spotted them earlier and have told google to filter them. Not sure on the ETA though.

 

I have to say I think its disgraceful for LEA to filter ad's. Thats the attitude that destroys site revenue doing that on mass at top levels.

It's not the LEA filtering ads - we're independent for a start!

 

We subscribe to SafetyNet Plus as our web filter and some, but not all, ads fail their internet filtering rules. Luckily, they only block the ad not the entire page when this happens.

Some excellent appropriate content being delivered by google. Isn't edugeek going to run the risk of being filtered if it continues to run borderline inappropriate ads?

Well dont really as its not in our content. They are being filtered out but it takes a little for google to get more relevant ad's

Also its temporary and could get removed at anytime really.

Sorry, Joe's posted about this elsewhere, but can we deal with this as the gaydar one will cause issues in a school, not that appropriate really for school use, I know its kind of out of our hands but surely they have catagories or something, or is google trying to tell us something about geeks that people always think?!

Yeah I think as long as the fine tuning is done so the inappropriate gets cut out then it should be ok.

 

Is there not a way to tame the ads to something relevant?

Nope google only let you try to filter ads after they appear and it can take hours. Filters have been applied but I have disabled image ad's for now as that may improve it.
