Video editing software recommendation needed

Hi All,

 

Could you recommend good video editing software please?

 

We don't do much editing at the moment however our new headteacher is quite keen to showcase our school with different ways and i think soon enough we will be doing more recording and editing.

 

I work in primary school. At the moment we record and edit Nativities, school play and sometimes assemblies. We need software that will allow as to burn to DVD/Cd as well.

 

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

How much do you want to spend?

 

Adobe Premier Elements might be the way to go if you want something half decent which doesn't cost too much.

For that sort of use, surely something like MovieMaker (if you can get it to run on your hardware/OS) would do?

I get good results with Vegas Pro. Adobe Premier is great too.

You can get the adobe K-12 pack (which includes Premier Pro) for £22 / year / device if you buy 25 (the minimum) so £550ish a year. I like the Serif Products but they don't make them anymore.

I had a play with the new microsoft 'video editor' that popped up in the start menu in a recent windows 10 update, I thought that seemed quite intuitive for a simple free editor (providing you don't need multitrack etc). Doesn't seem to burn to DVD though, but think there's plenty of free software to do that part.

Worth looking at HitFilm Express, in its basic form, free, but with add-ons (and annoyingly some which are used a fair bit), but you can see if you like it before buying anything. There is also Shotcut which is open source, and definitely worth a look.

 

Whatever option you go for in the end, you will want to ensure that you get a good quality graphics card (don't be tempted by cheap unheard of brands/grey imports/PowerColor) with as much grunt as affordable and will work with your machine. Most off the shelf machines from Dell, HP etc don't have much airflow, so a blower GPU is the way to go

I use Camtasia for quick projects, it's no-nonsense and handles a lot of different file types/codecs etc. no problem, though I don't think it does CD/DVD burning!

it all depends on budget.

Free - Shot cut or hitfilm express or davinci resolve. All have ups and downs but are free (except add ons but you may not need these for simple cut edits)

Cheap - Adobe premiere express

Less cheap - Adobe premier pro

For simple cutting of the footage you wont need anything more complicated than the free ones but if you want transitions and effects then you will more than likely need to invest.

 

Hardware wise - It depends on what you are editing and the level of editing. Simple cuts then most machines with an i5 will happily edit all day ( your render times will be linger without a GPU)

If you want flashy effects and such then you will want a dedicated GPU with at least 2GB of memory and at least 8GB of system RAM.

I do basic edits on an i5 with onboard GPU and 8GB of RAM and it handles it fine but struggles with colour correction etc
