When I asked, there is a cost for the VM version, if I remember correctly, £500 (so not much cheaper than the hardware version, even though you'll be providing the tin).

I'm using it through Synetrix on a non-default port (which is what took the time to get approved for me). I made sure I gave good details of security in place on server/clients (like 2 factor auth), and it went through without a massive amount of trouble, just a bit of time waiting! Cheers Will

On licensing front, if you're looking at Exchange standard edition and just for staff... your staff CALs will be covered by your desktop CALs, and the exchange server itself is then less than £100 on Schools agreement (have recently added it to ours). Server spec wise, I've gone for a single quad core, 4GB RAM, 3x 146GB (Mailstore) SAS and 2x 72GB (OS and Transaction Logs) SAS, and cost is ~£2.1k for server. Only other licensing cost for us is Backup Exec. I'm looking at this supporting our 70ish staff (maybe more) for the forseeable future. There's a very useful tool for working out requirements for Exch2007 (I think it's an HP tool), if I can find it, I'll let you know. Edit: Tool found for 2010 - http://h71019.www7.hp.com/ActiveAnswers/us/en/sizers/microsoft-exchange-server-2010.html - should give a good idea, but may overspec it (they tend to deal with significant user number/high traffic/high load email systems).

Hi, I've switched IP address blocking on on our NG, and we're now getting issues with Hotmail attachments. It looks like (for some stupid reason) Hotmail likes to try to use the IP address to grab the attachment ie http://IPADDR/get/getattachment.aspx I think I could get round this by using a regex URL, but it'll take me a while to work out what I need to put. If anyone has this regex URL, or can work it out quickly (I'm really not all that good with regex) or another way round it, could you let me know. Cheers Will

I would assume vertically moving, so drops from ceiling for students to work on them at floor level (saw them when doing some research a couple of years ago, can't find them now).

Just remember that when you have a SIMs upgrade on your server, you'll need to run via simload.exe once on the clients to drag the new version down. Cheers Will

I'm surprised that there's still 170MB being brought down then. Does it still grab 170MB after a restart of the machine (not just restart if SIMs)? Have you tried seeing what program is grabbing the data using process explorer or similar (I'd guess the files it's grabbing are in your remote SIMs directory in the setups subdirectory)? Just for completeness, have you tried disabling AV on a test machine and trying? Cheers Will

1 word - Antivirus When Simsload starts up, it checks some version info on the server side. A fair few AVs will see your computer accessing a file, and scan the file... so downloading the entire 170MB package. I've put in exceptions in AV for the remote SIMS directory, and load time is much reduced. This may be where to look next. Cheers Will

Ah, my old secondary school. It's quite a nice place, and when I popped in just over a year ago the systems looked fairly up to date. If you look at the JD it appears to be a Network Manager role with slightly more focus on man managing than a lot of roles have, it also appears to suggest that there will be responsibity for IT in all classrooms/subject areas (so actual responsibility for all IT, not having departments buy their own bits of kit then coming to you with the problems that occur due to not having checked with you). Nice pay as well (may drop the advert to my boss). Live in Nottingham now, so no real point in me applying.

Fiddler Web Debugger - Script Samples Looks like there's a way to add header's to IE requests... it also looks like it may be able to use .NET system calls, so may be able to pick up clientname. Haven't really got time to look at it at present, but if no one else does, I'll look in the New Year. [edit]Looks like fiddler's a proxy that would run on the local machine, so may not be suitable. Shame I don't have Citrix... apparently Virtual IP is in 2008R2, but as it's 64 bit, I've got no chance of going to that any time soon due to older curric software. The IP allocation per session is also an interesting hurdle, it doesn't look like there's a way to specify IP range per clientname (unless you could do this by script?). I wonder whether we could create an addon for IE that would put in an x-forwarded-for header with the clientname resolved to IP (or just clientname may do), and whether smoothwall could use this for client machine identification?

If you're using internet exploder in a TS environment, I wouldn't see this being possible as the client IP will be that of the TS and not the TC (so you'd identify the TS). I can't say I've ever had it working (though I would certainly like it to). If there is a way, it would be great if someone could pass the info on. Cheers Will

I would have a check in your IIS logs at the same time just to be 100% sure. I think that any scheduled jobs that access the mailbox would show as a different user accessing the mailbox.

Just a thought, but if it's internally hosted, couldn't you add it to the proxy bypass list? Cheers

Have done that - spoke to the guy in charge of IT Services for schools commenting about the lack of dynamic content filtering, and the response I got was a sort of "it does the job well enough" type response and that it's Becta accredited so it must be good enough filtering. It may be purely something to do with our LA and their relationship with EMBC, but I have no way of telling.
