BYOD - Anyone following a BYOD first strategy?
supportman replied to Zammo's topic in How do you do....it?
Whole school isn't great after seeing many implementations over the years. Most fail or die away after time and money spent and random SLT member who championed it moves on. It sometimes works but is a huge effort for very little gain. Maybe less photocopying costs? Personally our school went 6th form and boarders only. Works well for those who want them and lets the school teach how they want. We use a simple radius and BYOD network on a separate IP range with smoothwall. -
Smoothwall IDex being very flakey
supportman replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Great just installed on our DC. Seemed very smooth upgrade. Has anything changed in the way it works? I didn't see a changelog. -
We just bought IWB boards that have it built in, saves so much hassle!

Just checked and yeh its been removed, that's a shame as it was very useful for quick questions.

Usually pretty good here, answered within a day if its an easy question. Online chat is also very useful for queries on usage.

Filtering/Firewall quotes
supportman replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Securely and Fortinet are the 2 I am going to look at. Smoothwall is incredibly expensive for what it is. -

I've installed it but noone uses it. The vast majority of our staff and students use the web versions of MS Office these days. Its such too nicely integrated.

'Disappointed' bidder sues MAT after MIS Tender failure
supportman replied to vikpaw's topic in MIS Systems
In summary.... if United learning had been fair, Bromcom would have won the tender. Its quite clear from the judges remarks. -
Veeam Backup Appliance - AKA a Server with Tape Drive & Internal Storage
supportman replied to Jaan's topic in Hardware
We just have backup on a VM and use cloud storage these days, there is no need to run a powerful server for backup really. -

And just like that, Arbor joins the race! Amazing what competition does.... Introducing: Ask Arbor - powered by OpenAI - Arbor (arbor-education.com)

I dunno, it could be good. Imagine being able to ask an MIS chatbot "how many students you have on roll" or "Which staff are off sick today". Some of those might actually be quite useful, rather than multiple menu clicks or slow widgets.

Bromcom AI: The UK's first AI powered MIS | Bromcom Artificial intelligence is a big buzzword, but that definitely looks interesting. Sounds like a natural language chatbot, hopefully I can find out more at BETT.

We replaced all HP, Aruba, Netgear switches with Ubiquity a few years ago, its been great. Not had any fail and the central management is excellent.

Upskilling sites - similar to Pluralsight
supportman replied to Tom_P's topic in How do you do....it?
I had exactly the same issue, gave up in the end. Would be interested if anyone find something better. I ended up grabbing some udemy courses and uploading them to our internal video server. -
Just asked TES again if they are going to support Bromcom as we are also waiting, but got the standard no ETA and they will forward to their development team. I wonder if the takeover by TES has reduced their development speed... They always used to be so good.

Smoothwall IDex Agent not working
supportman replied to 5tu's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Just got this working, the instructions are ok but over about 4 different pages quite convoluted. I also tripped up adding the firewall rule as that wasn't clear either. All fine once you get trough to 2nd level support though. Is there any advantage to installing the idex client on devices as well as the agent on the domain controller? -
Smoothwall S9 filtering randomly falls over
supportman replied to timbo343's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Just been having similar issues suddenly on our S8 box which has been stable for 5+ years... I have taken some advice from this thread such as making an exception for CCTV and the block pages hint as well. Thanks everyone for the comments, they have helped greatly.
