  2. I am trying to do this, but Linux isn't my forte - I follow the guides word for word and Linux does something completely different every time :/

  4. Was thinking of selling my PS3 now I have a PS4, but for £100 it just isn't worth it, I regretted selling my PS2 when the PS3 came out so not making that mistake again. I wonder how long before the XboxOne price starts falling?

Solutions like SmoothWall are too costly for us Just trying to find the easiest and most affordable solution for transparent BYOD filtering.
  7. I did, they suggested buying their SafetyNet+ with transparent filtering. I did back in November, only to find out that I had to contact RM to enable the transparent part. Contacted RM to do this, costs extra of course.. So I thought I'd bite the bullet and pay. Then it turns out that RM haven't released transparent filtering in the West Midlands area yet and that "It's on their roadmap" (I assume its the same roadmap that IE10 is on, as that hasn't been re-released by RM yet.)
  8. Yes, but it seems to be that RM will only allow internet traffic through their SmartCache2 box. This is what's confusing me. SmartCache2 is just a squid server, with RMs software on it, which uses this upstream proxy: unfiltered.adslcache.rmplc.co.uk. This then passes through the CISCO, out to the internet. On both VLANs, the default gateway is already set as the CISCO firewall. In theory, I thought if I took out the proxy settings from the clients, it would just bypass the filtering and get unfiltered internet, but that's not the case.
  9. We use RM for our internet, using SmartCache2 as a proxy. I have recently set up a new VLAN for our wireless devices on a new ip range (172.10.0.0/21) and want these to bypass the SmartCache2 proxy and connect directly to the internet. We have been trying to use a linux box to do this, but now we're a little stuck. We have Ubuntu installed with 2 NICS (one on VLAN1, one on VLAN2) - our main HP L2 switch does the routing between these and our DHCP server. We also have a CISCO firewall that acts as a default gateway to the internet. I've set up a new firewall rule to allow traffic to pass through 172.10.0.0/21 ip range, and can see that it's working ok, with packets being allowed through. The problem is that we keep getting "cannot connect to DNS" errors on the client end. We want to use OpenDNS for our BYOD, but even setting the DNS server settings manually on the clients doesn't work. I have set up forwarders on our local DNS server to forward requests from 192.168.3.108 (linux box ip) to OpenDNSs servers but still no luck. I believe we need to use iptables on the linux box to forward 172.10.0.0/21 traffic to our CISO firewall internet gateway, but not entirely sure.

  11. Hi all, Managed to successfully re-create the rule and now all is well. Lesson learned I think, I should've backed it up first - amateur mistake! Thanks PS - Deleted firewall screenshots now too for obvious reasons.
  12. Cut a long story short, I was setting up some new firewall rules yesterday for our BYOD system that's soon being installed. However, I have somehow managed to accidentally delete an existing rule, knocking our entire school offline. I have looked at the logs and it seems to be dropping packets out to the internet now, but I can't find out how to rectify it. I've attached some screenshots of our config.   13. At the moment we have Squid on a Windows 7 machine and use SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager to route all 172.10.x.x traffic to our SmartCache2 (192.168.3.202). We followed this guide: SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager - Online user manual, Adding proxy server but it doesn't seem to work at all. Squid works fine if we enter the proxy settings manually into the test client, just the transparent part doesn't work. I'm thinking of installing linux instead and configuring squid with ip-tables like @localzuk suggests.
  14. I've heard the WPAD.dat files aren't a great solution, as it doesn't work with all devices. I thought we would need to configure a transparent proxy server. SmartCache2 can't do transparent, which is why we're currently looking at squid, but not really sure where to start with it all.
  15. Mainly HP ProCurve switches - So Ruckus can do transparent proxy? Need to get to the point where the clients don't need to put any proxy/IP settings in to get to the internet.
  16. We have BYOD wireless being put in soon (Ruckus) - We have set up our network so that all the wireless devices are in their own VLAN, separate from our CC4 network. We currently use RM SmartCache 2 for filtering, with a CISCO firewall. I need to set it up so that the wireless devices connect through a transparent proxy to the internet. What would be the best way to approach this? We need to keep costs down so I have been setting up a small squid server to do this by passing traffic from squid, through our SmartCache2 to get filtering, through the firewall and out to the internet. We have a squid box set-up with Kubuntu and 2 NICs but don't really know where to start in terms of configuring it all. Advice welcome

Disabled routing on the 2626 now (thought I already did it), went to check the default gateway on DHCP server and it was set as 192.168.3.200 - changed that to 192.168.3.38 and it picked up an IP address immediately! [borat voice]: Great Success! Thanks to all for the help - would've really struggled without edugeek Now to configure and connect squid ready for BYOD..... Lee
  20. Yes, 192.168.3.59 is our DHCP server. On the workstation, I set the default gateway to 172.10.0.20 (Sorry, I put DHCP instead of default gateway above - typo)

  22. I've managed to tag port 27 on VLAN1 + VLAN2 on our test switch, and also tagged VLAN1 + VLAN2 on the main switch (port B2). On our test workstation (that comes off the test switch) I have untagged this port on VLAN2, and set the default gateway server as 172.10.0.20... But still no IP, and can't ping 172.10.0.20 - Now I'm really stumped as to why it can't get an IP.

  24. ahh, HP and their terminology! That makes a lot more sense now, I've been using the HP trunking features! So, I need to TAG (not untag) VLAN1 + VLAN2 on port 27 on the edge switch (which is a fiber connection back to the main) and then on the main TAG VLAN1 + VLAN2 on the port that the edge switch comes off. Yesterday when I tagged VLAN1 + VLAN2 on port 27 on the edge switch, all the clients on VLAN1 lost connection to the servers for some reason. @LukeTitmus our range is 172.10.0.xx/24 we're just testing at the minute, but it will all be logical when it goes live
  25. I've now disabled routing on the edge switch completely, and re-configured the main switch for routing. On the edge switch, it's port 27 that connects back to the main, so I set that port as trunked (Trk1) and tagged it for VLAN1 & VLAN2, the problem is that as soon as I do that, all the clients coming off the edge switch lose connection, untill I untag VLAN1 on Trk1 again :/
