Microsoft Connected Cache for Enterprise and Education Preview
StephenPink replied to MYK-IT's topic in Cloud Services
Think they'll add OneDrive/Sharepoint content to this as an option? That could be very useful... -
Yes the lack of notifications on a group calendar is super annoying. We just invite the Team when creating events; so it goes into everyones personal calendar (assuming they accept of course)

Thanks all - definitely food for thought. I'm fairly confident with S2D, having implemented previously, hence the suggestion. It's the failover/redundancy piece that then comes up when on-prem - trying to find that balance between availability and simplicity. But focusing back on the cloud piece - if I've secured good hardware, at a good price - and that works well, has redundancy, and performs - then I struggle further to justify the cost of cloud computing, when I've got that in place, with significantly less ongoing costs (assuming just electricity/some form of support costs)? Especially then with the points you made that would mean the server cost is even less? Obviously the file storage piece is straightforward; to reduce on-site storage, move to cloud storage, relatively easy and quick, but taking that out of the equation, what about the rest? Thanks

Following this with interest - having had server hardware failure, and quite an aged/legacy infrastructure overall at one site in particular. I'm currently of the opinion that actually a 4-node S2D cluster would be more cost effective in the long-run; gives the flex for legacy systems still, can up the strorage/expand the compute if/when required, and especially when you factor in the local caching required for media/large files regardless of cloud storage platform. Open to being told I'm wrong though I've struggled to make the finances work, likely because to meet most the existing requirements it would have to be more IaaS. Likewise the IaaC idea - really would like to explore - however the time/cost to invest in that doesn't seem to be worth the trade off in an environment where we're not actually spinning up/down servers regularly. (or should we be?) Cheers

Upgrading users to A3... Do they still need A1 ?
StephenPink replied to mikkydoos's topic in Cloud Services
I didn't think you could assign both - the A3 will replace the A1. -
iPad - Managed Apple IDs asking for Passcode
StephenPink replied to StephenPink's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Good find, thank you! Will see if that helps the team... -
We had this for a period at one site - support sorted eventually, but it was a combination of a strange issue with the DNS filtering (that we have enforced as a failsafe) and our IP address being "lost" from registration

Training help- Cyber, Office 365, Switching etc
StephenPink replied to Andycat's topic in Courses and Training
I've been looking into Pluralsight, as a training platform for the team. Not super cheap, but compared to the likes of QA courses etc, better value - and very useful analytics and tracking. I really like the SkillsIQ part. -
Hey all, Been mucking about with Intune and deploying with Autopilot - but it just seems to be very hit and miss? E.g. 10 laptops, brand new - will power on and get to the OOBE screen fine. Pre-provisioning - some find more apps than others, even thought same dynamic group. Some fail to deploy all apps, some don't User-provisioning after - again some fail, some work. Some just hang and never complete Intune > Wipe > to try again. Then works. Or doesn't. Then Wipe again, and works. Or doesn't. Repeat I've not found anything useful or predictable - and the location (site with one firewall, site with a different, at home) doesn't seem to make a difference either... Any suggestions? Or is this the norm? Cheers

Microsoft OneDrive taking hours to sync for users
StephenPink replied to talksr's topic in Cloud Services
Is there a way to remove the "Add shortcut to Onedrive" button? This is causing us some confusion for staff, as well as the processing issues mentioned by others as well -
iPad - Managed Apple IDs asking for Passcode
StephenPink replied to StephenPink's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Ahhh yay! I mean, not yay (feel your pain) but glad it isn't something specific to me/my Trust. I don't recall seeing it prior to iOS 18 but could be wrong. It seemed to around the time the changes were made to the Apple ID sign in experience - the visuals are different and so is wording. Please do let me know how you get on with Apple! Thanks -
iPad - Managed Apple IDs asking for Passcode
StephenPink replied to StephenPink's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Yes however they are federated to Azure so in terms of Apple ID password they don't have one. The "Shared iPad" passcode only comes into play when signing into a shared iPad - if they have never done this, then they will have never needed to create a passcode. Whilst we can reset them in ASM, this is an additional step which when doing the Year 7 handout of ~300 will cause a significant issue. -
Stop YouTube asking for sign in when using Edge.
StephenPink replied to kennysarmy's topic in How do you do....it?
Interesting - we've not had that, but have definitely had our fair share of issues (although weirdly, it only ever seems to be one site and not the other...) Anyway I'd be interested to hear who else you would look at? The reason we chose Securly was that there were so few options out there that ticked all the options, for a predominantly 1:1 iPad site. Cheers -
I thought it was reasonable - and had the most integrations, all of which are included. A lot of others I looked at, kept having "optional extras" at a cost which was irritating... We're a team of 10 currently as well, which perhaps helped with value. PM me if you want to compare pricing? Cheers

We recently went with HaloITSM - liking it so far, and lots of features still to be explored

Forgot to say, had this update on 17/09: Appears to be sorted for us. -
Smoothwall MAIDEN
StephenPink replied to synaesthesia's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi, Good spot - just run it, as running Smoothwall on Maiden at one site, and yes, fails on terrorism content! Let me know what Smoothwall have to say... -

iPad - Managed Apple IDs asking for Passcode
StephenPink replied to StephenPink's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Nope sorry, these are 1:1 enrolled devices -
Hi guys, Weird one - have noticed on new iPads being set up, that when signing into the Managed Apple ID (federated to Azure), students are now being prompted to enter their iPad passcode. Assume this is to do with Keychain in iCloud changes? Think I remember reading something about it but can't find it now... Anyway the problems we're having are that; - the passcode is sometimes not the current iPad passcode, but a previous one - even after entering a correct, accepted passcode, the user doesn't get signed in to their Apple ID, it returns to the standard "Sign in" message Anyone got any ideas/seeing this as well? All devices supervised and managed via Jamf School as well in case that makes a difference. Cheers, Stephen

Thanks everyone already reporting this - I've had the same today at one of our sites using Securly and have raised with support now. Will keep you updated. Just to add - we've been using Securly for at least 3 years now, and whilst it's mostly been smooth, one of the two sites we have with them seems to have constant issues, that are never resolved. They rebuilt the entire backend for this site, and screwed it up massively so had to redo again, and ever since then hasn't been the same - and every issue they are now requesting Wireshark packet captures for... -
Yeah good point - I haven't looked very far into it yet, so wasn't sure if there was a ready to go Linux build specifically for this sort of thing! Unfortunately our current licensing is tied up until 2026 so don't think anyone would want to advise at this stage? Yes true - hm how vague can I be but still useful.... Multi-site - would be interested in talking to anyone who is doing that, across multiple domains, as if an MSP?

First day back, what has, or is, going to break?
StephenPink replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
The hypervisor at one site bricked itself over the weekend following (I think) some spectacularly failed Windows Updates, taking down literally that entire site. Took most of yesterday to resolve, and involved fiddling with the system maintenance switch to reset BIOS, and then again to reset BIOS password (as apparently that was never handed over)... fun Monday! Luckily, no students until next week! -
I had exactly the same issue! Took me ages to work that out as well.... I am now having another issue - that works when I manually deploy, but not when deploying via Configuration Manager, and can't for the life of me work out why. I've got Acrobat DC set to uninstall, then install Creative Cloud, but it bums out when deployed in the task sequence - and can't find the logs...
