Not quite an answer, but we're in the similar stage of weighing up options. Following a few meetings and discussions, it's looking like central tenant is the way to go. More work, but worth it. And apparently the only way to get cross-site communication sorted (Exchange GAL etc). The communications piece is the biggest issue faced currently with multiple tenants so that's the driving force behind the future solution. Cheers

iPads and Jamf School, definitely. However not USB-C - the 10.2 inch iPad is the best value for money but still Lightning.

Looking at ours at the moment (currently most are with O2) - but has anyone considered the device/handset side of it? Want to ensure that all devices are kept up to date/refreshed regularly with minimal faff, but O2 didn't seem to have anything they could do (other than simply purchase devices from them). Cheers

Thanks all, will double check built-in SMTP on Server 2022 and see how it goes - will also have a look at that hmailserver, that rings a bell anyway actually. I thought SMTP AUTH still used Basic Authentication though so is going to stop working?
-
Thanks - yes I have. In fact, that's where PaperCut directs you from their support article on the deprecation of Basic Auth, and advises the SMTP Relay option. Cheers
-
Hi all, With the Basic Authentication deprecation, we have a number of systems/applications that still don't support Modern Authentication. Microsoft's own SMTP Relay server is a bit hit-and-miss these days (having been deprecated since Server 2012 R2 I believe) so was wondering what alternative SMTP Relay software people were using? Obviously one that does support Modern Authentication, and preferably free? Thanks, Stephen

New AD users not picking up Printers GPO
StephenPink replied to Sonic007's topic in How do you do....it?
I had something similar when I took over a site - turned out a predecessor had set specific permissions on each printer object on the print server; so although the GPO was applying, not all users had permission to access the printer object, so it wouldn't appear. Worth a quick check! Cheers, Stephen -
Haha yes I have! Remembered that little trick already...

Hi all, Quick one I'm hoping someone has seen before - when going to deploy SIMS clients (SOLUS3 > Environment > Targets > Clients > Add > SIMS > Choose Clients > Active Directory) I get the following error: "Error in computer selection. The user name or password is incorrect". I know those Domain Admin credentials are correct, and have tried launching the SOLUS3 UI as both Local Admin and Domain Admin and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've opened a ticket with EES Support, but not super hopeful given previous experience... Any suggestions? Thanks, Stephen

Do you still have Windows 7 and do you have extended support?
StephenPink replied to johnsmith12345's topic in Windows 7
Yes - unfortunately! Not by choice, has been inherited. Around £40 per device, per year. Cheers -
Did you manage to find a suitable replacement, that let you close the cable holder piece? A number of ours have started to fail! Whilst I’ve found an Anker branded replacement that works, it doesn’t quite fit… Cheers, Stephen

Yes definitely checking eBay too, there's some options on there which is a relief! Figured I'd ask around anyway, I know I prefer old kit going to a good cause rather than just recycling/waste. @MGSTech fingers crossed!

Hi all, Bit of a plea for help here - I'm trying to make some short-term improvements to one of my sites, by reusing an old HP 8212zl as a core switch. Unfortunately, I only have 1 working 24p SFP module (J8706A) left - does anyone have some lying around going spare that I can pinch/purchase? As I have been quoted over £500 each by my usual supplier - which is a bit steep for something that is supposed to be a short-term low cost win. Many thanks, Stephen

Hi all, Have inherited a Smoothwall - not done anything with these for a few years so a little rusty! Used to using PaloAlto, hoping someone can help translate what I know how to do on a Palo onto a Smoothwall... Need to create what would be a NAT rule on the Palo; - Source Zone: Internal - Source Address: InternalServerIP - Destination Zone: External - Destination Interface: ExternalInterface - Destination Address: ANY - Service: http/https - Translation Type: Static IP - Translated Address: ExternalServerIP - Bi-directional enabled So on the Smoothwall I've got a port forward setup, and a firewall rule as well. The logs show traffic coming in and being accepted but I think I've missed something? Can't remember how the Smoothwall Source NAT rules work? Have opened a ticket but thought it was worth an ask on here just in case it is something obvious! Thanks, Stephen

Secondary School Infrastructure Upgrade - Doable under £10k?
StephenPink replied to CyBeRkId2002's topic in Wired Networks
Just to add - another vouch for the FS transceivers. The money saved there allows you to keep a reasonable supply of spares, with plenty of change - and I've had no issues. Used them across my secondary school, 10Gb ones for the backbone, and several 25Gb for the links between cores (using Aruba switches). Genuine ones are ludicrous prices! Cheers, Stephen -
Hi all, Currently looking to improve a number of bits across multiple sites; helpdesk/ticketing system, documentation processes, asset and change management are the main areas. I'm hoping that there is some wonderful platform out there that can do it all for me? I've ended up down the rabbit hole of more PSA/MSP Software and was wondering what others are already using (if any) or if stacking multiple products is actually better (assuming a lot have integrations between each other available). A few that have jumped out at me so far, and would appreciate feedback if anyone is using, are: - SuperOps - https://superops.ai/ - NinjaOne - https://www.ninjaone.com/ - HaloPSA - https://halopsa.com/ Thanks in advance! Cheers, Stephen

Media and Music Editing Workflows
StephenPink replied to StephenPink's topic in How do you do....it?
Sorry should've specified - Media are using Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects (latest versions), Music are using Logic Pro, Native Instruments, Sibelius (latest versions). I have been tempted by the OneDrive Files-On-Demand, but have concerns over if they don't finish syncing before logging off. Additionally, the number of students and movement of them between machines depending on lesson times etc makes the local caching less practical. Thanks, Stephen -
Hey all, Hoping someone on here has some advice, as I'm not too sure where to start. What do you all do for Media Editing/Music Editing suites in terms of workflow? - File sizes are huge, and likely to grow as 4K content increases - Local storage is not practical, due to being shared devices (and then would need backing up) - Current network storage is far too slow - Cloud storage would take too long to sync, again due to being shared devices and students moving around I'm assuming there are bespoke solutions for this sort of thing, but would be great if someone has some ideas/companies to contact - even if it's what not to do/who to avoid! Media are open to PC or Mac, Music are Mac only - so ideally something that would work for both, but not the end of the world if not. Cheers, Stephen

Hey all, Weird one - testing a 21H2 build, no real changes to our previous 1909. First logon, all fine. Second logon, the user gets a completely black screen, after the "Preparing Windows" for several seconds (long enough to be annoying/noticeable). Third logon, all fine again! The Windows image itself before capture has only had Windows updates applied, no other modifications. I've disabled the steps in the task sequence that tweak the provisioned apps/default profile etc in case something has changed there, but that's not made a difference. Nothing obvious in event viewer. Anyone got any bright ideas? Is it something others have seen on 21H2/21H2 update bug related? Cheers, Stephen

Yes, all devices will require a factory reset to migrate - and you cannot restore an iCloud backup. We moved away from AirWatch to Jamf School a few years ago, due to cost, poor support and just and ever growing number of weird issues. Jamf School also has some additional, very nice education specific features. Apple School Manager was easy, especially for free apps - I set up a new token, to link to the new MDM and then just moved the licenses gradually over from one token to the other, as they were released from the old MDM. Cheers, Stephen

Sorry to revive this thread - has anyone heard anything more/come with an ingenious solution regarding those historical, existing chats? Causing a few issues (again) at the moment! Cheers

User Name Changes - Across multiple systems....
StephenPink replied to pseudo's topic in How do you do....it?
The most annoying one for us is Managed Apple ID's - the name change syncs, but ends up creating a new account (possibly because ours are federated to Azure). This means that the data has to be downloaded and transferred to the new Apple ID. Everything else is pretty much automatic syncing from AD; new name becomes primary, old stays as alias. -
FYI I did just get a call back from ESS - and the answer was as firm no 1 year contract. 3 years or go!
