I also have this problem. It is only with safari on os x mainly. I just never got around to querying it. Mine is on all sites that I visit.

I've just come across this site which suggest that another user is trying to get the username into a variable ($1) Halfway down there is this statement... Don't know if this is indeed an issue? Here's the rest of the thread. Someone posted a possible script at the end to get the username variable. I have not confirmed it though. Just looked on this site: OS X commands It lists a command "logname". I checked it out and it does indeed return the name of the user logged in. Whether its useful to you or not is a different matter.

When i started my job the boss was kind enough to give me a gentle easing in. What i mean by this is that he said that i did not need to worry about issues that users had and i should just concentrate on getting to know the network and how things are being run and what could do with improving etc. Maybe your boss could do the same. I must admit it does help as you can get on with sorting out the important things before worrying about the users trivial matters (obviously not all issues would be trivial) but you may also find that sorting out some long-standing issues as you find them, if they are simple to eradicate, could remove the users issue anyway. I for one am with grumbledook with the licensing point. I am still trying to sort out the licensing mess, whilst also trying to get my head around MS crap that is their licensing model. I've only been here nearly 2 years now. Any way good luck. It is actually quite hard in a primary school due to the limitations of their age range. If you work out the best way to give them individual user names and password whilst making it easy for them to remember for the 5-6 yr olds then let me know.

Reading through the link seems to suggest that creating the file through NOTEPAD works. Just open notepad, create the file and then choose all file types and then save as .htaccess. You can't create the file directly in explorer or you will get the error. Hope this helps more.

if your doing this at home, then you have an imac don't you (still jealous by the way)? Create the file on there and transfer it over.

Looking at my server (2003) now, the setting is in User configuration > Administrative Tools > windows Components > Windows Explorer > Do not move deleted files to the Recycle bin. Attached screenshot so you can view the description. It may not be the issue you have as this seems to only take affect in Explorer:

There is a setting in GPO on 2003 that says not to send to recycle bin and delete immediately. Could be that.

what sort? Apple scripting or unix shell scripting? I am looking into this as well. If you find any information, let me know. There is a link to applescript on the apple site, although there isn't much info there. If you know the syntax or how to build an applescript there is a dictionary available. This allows you to see just what type of options are available. For example if you open the dictionary and then choose Finder from the list, you can then see what options there are available, such as copy duplicate contents etc. There is also the record option which i was looking at yesterday which seemed to work quite well. It allows you to record what you do and then enters the appropriate code into the applescript window building it up bit by bit. A good way to see just how it works. Unix scripts. There is a section for shell scripting for beginners on the developers site. I have it in PDF format. I have attached it here for you to download. Remember both applescript and shell scripts can be leveraged using Automator which also has the advantage of variables as well now. ShellScripting.pdf

Calpol have an even bigger range now, covering colds, coughs and other things. I would recommend the Dr Browns bottles though that are supposed to help reduce colic. We purchased the avent bottle kit first off before the little un was born and he suffered really bad with colic in the first few months. I particularly remember one bad night. We then switched over to the Dr Browns bottles on recommendation from someone i worked with and it almost removed his colic entirely. @ Russ. I ended up in a headlock during my wifes pregnancy. It was most exhausting :-) I do remember the birth like it was yesterday. I have a picture of my son 4 minutes after birth, with his eyes wide open. Amazing it was.

What about Greenbrier Services Central or GreenBrier Central Services (GCS / GSC) for short, giving an abbreviation to work the logo design.

Hello, I saw an unusual issue whilst going through my AD-OD integration. When i was setting up some hidden shares on the OS X Server, each time i added one with a $ at the end, the windows 2003 server could not connect to it. It said the network provider didn't accept the given path. Upon removing the $ it then connected fine. This was the case for all shares with the $ sign at the end. Has anyone else seen this problem or just me. I wouldn't put it past just being me as the last 4 weeks have been a nightmare on the OS X side of things. Thanks

Relocation of itunes folder: iTunes > System preferences > Advanced > General > iTunes Music folder location > Click the "Change" button. I have a 20" ACD connected to my Mac mini. I love it. It doesn't seem to hurt my eyes as much as other TFTs do. Why? i don't know, but i got mine with my Dual 1.8Ghz G5 just before it was discontinued for the next range of G5s with speed increase. All for £1100 brand new.

Sorry, i should have updated this thread earlier today. I have managed to sort the problem out. It ended up being a file permission that i had set up to allow normal users to update Sims. It was strange though as the classroom machines that also have this GPO linked to them had no issues with it. I did find something useful though. I'm not sure if you know or not but i didn't. If you have an issue with a GPO and run RSOP on the client machines. You can right-click on the Computer/User configuration and it will list the errors in the event logs. But also if you drill down through the settings themselves, if you come across the one thats failing, it has a red X on it and points you to a log file to check. In my case it was the winlogon.log file. Thanks for replying though.

Hello, I hope someone can help me with this as this is the last machine on my network that i need to set up and get group policies assigning to. I have looked on the MS site but the 0xd error isn't listed. The full error i get is: I have configured the GPOs and created different OUs for the machines to go into. The GPOs have been linked to the GPOs. And the one in question (the admin one of all things) has the same GPOs linked to it as the classroom machines GPO. As these have already pulled the GPO permissions from the AD it suggests that there is nothing wrong with the GPO settings. What could be causing this problem? I have already tried the folloing commands from a site: esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb followed by the gpupdate /force. The post says to check to make sure that the SceCLi policies are applied successfully in the event viewer but they aren't.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you mean by the XRaid although i have yet to really push it. We are a primary school after all. I have decided to place most of the shares on there mainly for speed. With only a max of around 60 concurrent connections it should be quick enough. Well, we'll see after the 6 weeks. The AD-OD sandbox paper i posted had a script to create the home dirs for the users in AD (it runs on the AD server, VBScript). I used this to create the users dirs but now need to copy the os x template into their home dirs too. This is the bit i am unsure about. I will post an update if i can work out how to do it.

The OD server gets joined to the AD first (to join the ADs kerberos realm) and then promoted to an OD master. This enables you to create user groups in the workgroup manager and add the AD users to that group. You can then manage the preferences for that group. The mac clients also get bound to both AD and OD. This is so that users can authenticate against the AD server and pick up the managed prefs for the machines and groups from the OD.

I generally tend to check the prices on PCWB.com | Laptops, Desktop PC's, Printers, Projectors & More (prices are cheaper than advertised once you log in) and then get a quote. Once I have one I then use this to check around to see who can better it. The reason being is that all the orders I have had quoted for from pcwb.com have rarely been beaten.

the icon your user is seeing is more than likely a folder on the boot up (grey) screen with a question mark in the middle flashing. This as someone has said is usually down to the fact that the system cannot find an os that is bootable. It could be a issue with files/folders or a hardware failure. The disk util should be able to provide more information. You could try the alt key whil booting. If there is a problem with the drive or os it should not bring up the icon for that drive. Just information really this post.

Thanks for the info. When i had imaged the machines and went to bind, i was unaware that there would be any problems. Maybe i should have researched it more? But when the problem arose it was hard to pin-point the exact cause. I googled for quite a while to find out what the problem was and my brother came across the local KDC article which pointed to the local KDC possibly being the problem. On following that i then found the command on bombich's website but the ones you post did not come up. Maybe as i said because i wasn't sure what i was looking for at the time. It's still good to know though. You say you bound to 10.4 Tiger server. I was using 10.5.4 Server (which is OD Master). Don't know if this makes much of a difference, but the server side of things seemed to be fine generally, except the admin tools being soooo slow. The other problem i have yet to add the commands for was the addition of the search paths for the AD and OD servers in the directory utility. This caused me a right headache. The issue was this. When i ran the dscl command to add the AD, it said that it did not exist or something like that. But when i bound manually to the AD it used the dscl path that i was tring to add by a script?? When i managed to get the script to take on the dscl level, when i activated the AD plugin and it said: The AD server is responding normal but the server is not in your authentication list. So it wouldn't look for the users on the AD in the authentication process. The only way to get around this was to run the commands in ran now shown in the original post as promised. So a few issues found and solved but the osascript is still outstanding. Have you had any luck with this one?

I thought I would post my experiences I have just had when integrating 25intel iMacs into an active directory and open directory. After net-restoring the machines (eventually) I then proceeded to copy and install the required software via ARD. This was the easy bit. After this I tried to bind them to the AD and OD. I run a script through ARD. unfortunately each machine had an issue where they all thought they were the same. It turned out to be the local kerberos db that was the issue. So to disable this you need to run the command sudo dscl /local/default delete /Config/kerberosKDC This should remove the local kdc and also remove the duplicate machine issue when trying to bind to the OD. I also had an issue with binding to the AD as well. The biggest issue was that the plugin is not enabled by default when you add it via a script. You need to use the defaults write command to activate the plugin. # Activate the AD plugin defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService "Active Directory" "Active" #convert the plist back to xml for editing plutil -convert xml1 /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService.plist # Restart DirectoryService (necessary to reload AD plugin activation settings) killall DirectoryService #I had to use these to write my search paths as the AD dscl command wouldn't take. defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/SearchNodeConfig "Search Node Custom Path Array" -array "/Active Directory/All Domains" defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/SearchNodeConfig "OD-Server path" plutil -convert xml1 /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/SearchNodeConfig.plist killall DirectoryService After manually finding all this and then editing the plist files until i got it working, i then came across Bombich's website which had a script for Ad-binding Leopard. I have uploaded this for convenience as well. The next major PITA was logging on remotely using the osascript command. I have still not managed to get this to work on leopard. So these are just a few of the issues (but the main ones). If anyone has not seen these issues I would be interested to hear.
