#1 rule of going to a 1:1 or BYOD provision: consider the learning you want the technology to support. Throwing tablets at a school does not, in itself, improve teaching and learning. Before any money is spent (by you or parents), you need to sit down with SMT and have a careful discussion about how teaching is going to change to make effective use of 1:1. If the parents are paying for them they are going to be extremely annoyed if they end up not being used well.

My setup is very similar, 2 UPSs, with 1 power supply plugged into each for every server. I don't have individual breakers for the UPSs, but have just requested it from facilities when the building is rewired next year!

The sort of force you would need to use to disable and steal from a courier van far exceeds the force needed to bring down a small drone. The van driver would undoubtedly notice and call the police sharpish. So unless you have a thief willing to also murder the van driver and any other witnesses, the chances of getting caught are pretty high. Taking potshots at a small drone as it flies over your garden is a lot less conspicuous, low-risk, and within the realm of the thief-not-murderer type criminal.

I remember years ago being at a staff farewell for one of the Chemistry teachers, and the head of Chemistry was making all sorts of so-bad-they're-good science jokes. A particularly bad one was about how this teacher, who was also a youth leader at church, had been "radicalising his students - he removed one of their electrons". The head of Physics and I were falling about laughing while everyone else was looking at us like we were mad.

In many cases that will work but some systems get shirty if the DNS name you connect with isn't the one they are expecting. Anything using HTTPS will display a certificate error, for example, and internal sites configured for automatic logon will prompt for credentials if you connect using an external hostname. With the suggestion I gave, the browser will redirect to the correct internal hostname and automatic logon would still work.

Not that I'm aware of, though if anyone else knows a straightforward way to do it in Smoothwall, I'd be interested to hear about it.

If you manage your own DNS internally then you can do it that way. Set up a simple web server of your choice with a redirect configured, then create the appropriate records on your DNS server to point to your web server.

Assuming you aren't using ADFS with single sign-on, users will always need to sign in with their O365 credentials in the Word client, even with 2013: the browser auth token doesn't travel outside the browser for security reasons. You can tick the box to remember the sign-in, which greatly reduces the frequency they need to do this. Have you installed the Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant on your machines? This is pretty much a required component if you are using 2007/2010.

Are you buying through Dell direct? I'd wager a reseller could put that config together for you; Premier doesn't give you the full config options and Dell's education account managers sometimes don't even know that themselves in my experience.

Sorry got myself at crossed purposes there. What I was getting at is that what you've spotted; the displayName is ignored by the Start Screen. The only way of changing what is displayed is to change the givenName and sn fields. Contrary to what I said earlier, this won't affect their outgoing mail header in Exchange, but it would affect other systems like O365 and Google Apps.

I remember making an enquiry about this a while back and never got a response either. I'm not 100% convinced they are still around - their "Customers" site SSL certificate expired in July. When did you purchase?

As far as I know it will pull whatever is in AD. If you need to change it, that's where the change has to be made. That change will of course affect anything else that pulls from the same location (including Exchange email if you have it, and Office 365 and Google Apps if you sync from AD).

Assuming you don't have some other endpoint security system (such as Impero), another option is to use USB Drive Letter Manager - USBDLM to stop the USB sticks from being given a drive letter at all. Have a read through of the "Letters by Device Type" section in the USBDLM Help.

This is usually down to the user not having permissions to run an .exe from wherever the SmallBasic file is saved. If they haven't saved at all, then it will be trying to run from the user's temp folder, which is often locked down by GP Software Restrictions even on non-RM networks due to malware often running from that location. It's also common for RM systems to block .exe files from running from all sorts of places, sometimes including the user's home folder.

No, this is not possible. You are right in assuming it works for you because you've already got a Microsoft account linked to the same email address because of your VL sign-in. Once you are signed in you can install the SkyDrive Pro app and sign into that with an O365 account to access your O365 files, but it doesn't sync the same way the regular SkyDrive does, which is unfortunate.

Well, that means it is still notable, even if it's not the root of the problem. From the log it looks like the buffer overflows are occurring while Windows is reading the ACL on the file. If that isn't happening on unaffected profiles, it could indicate that the ACL is different on the affected ones. Can you run the command cacls UsrClass.dat on both unaffected and affected users and see if there are any differences that stand out?

I deployed it here very soon after it launched, so have now been using it so long it's hard to remember what the changes were (other than using all caps on the ribbon tab titles that everyone seemed to hate for no real reason). The main improvement is that it integrates better with Office 365. Unfortunately there is also a horrible bug with roaming profiles if you use Office 365, so it's a double-edged sword. Outlook IMAP is still bloody awful, especially with Gmail. All the other Outlook bugs features from 2010 are still there. Definitely switch to the Grey theme for the UI as soon as possible.

You won't find an official download as Microsoft no longer support Windows 7 without SP1. I've still got a copy of the installers, however, so PM me and let me know whether you need x86 or x64 and I will see what I can do. I will emphasise however that running Windows 7 without SP1 means you are missing a number of serious security fixes and you should try to get upgraded ASAP.

Amazon have a few around the £10-15 mark. This one has the best reviews but this one might be a decent cheaper alternative.
