Does the script run asynchronously? GPP only works synchronously and so makes the user wait until its finished before they get to the desktop. To be honest I've only got 2 printers that I'm forced to use the UPD with (old models with no native Vista/7 drivers), and they'll both be gone soon. All my other printers just work - including the other HP ones actually, ever since I switched to only using the drivers from Windows Update instead of the ones from HP. After years of dealing with stupid HP driver issues (having all users suddenly get the 'mirrored output' tickbox turned on by default was my favourite) I'm really just bitter and tired.

A new technique of printing? Are you referring to point and print here? Because that's pretty much the standard method of sharing printers on a server.

I believe the traditional term for that, which works very well for us networking types, is "laying cable".

For any of you claiming not to have trouble with HP print drivers: if you can tell me how to get the UPD to work with point & print on Windows 7 without adding 30-45 seconds to the login time, I will actually pay you monies. (I also refer you to this thread and the similar ones linked from it for an example of how bad HP print drivers can be.)

You are absolutely right - any online backup (onsite or offsite) is potentially susceptible to a sufficiently skilled or complex intrusion. The only system that is not susceptible to a remote attack is one where you have to be physically present to change the storage media. Really it comes down to whether the risk (and likelihood) balances out the manpower you would spend dealing with offline backups, and the additional cost if you implement both offline and online.

No. At the moment I have the server on a nightly reboot which keeps me from having to intervene more than every week or so, but I am still none the wiser. I have even rebuilt the DPM server last half term to no avail. My next step (later during the summer) is to rebuild it without SP1 to see if it is SP1 on the DPM server itself that is causing the problem.

If all you want is software deployment, I strongly urge you to consider Local Update Publisher. It does all the same software deployment stuff SCE can do (and more), using the same backend (WSUS), actually works properly, and is free. It's not quite as idiot-proof as SCE for the person doing the deployments, but it's not far off.

Well, SeePoint Kiosks - Touch Screen Kiosk Manufacturer make touchscreens but they are more PoS and Kiosk type rather than suited to education. None of those in your screenshot are standard Windows fonts, and AFAIK never have been. Helvetica in particular is expensive to get hold of these days - old versions of Adobe Type Manager sometimes have it in Type 1 format, but I know the copy I have actually causes Office and IE to crash so I stopped using it. Times-Roman is almost certianly very similar to Times New Roman, but isn't identical. If this were anything other than a Publisher document, I'd suggest someone had been editing it on a Mac, but I'm not sure Office for the Mac even includes Publisher, does it?

I didn't tick all the boxes for my current post, and my manager told me that the interview panel worried I wouldn't find the job challenging and would be gone soon after. The lesson I learned is to take job postings as a suggestion. Half the time the people writing them have no clue what they actually need anyway. tl;dr: apply anyway, if you get an interview you know you're in with a shot.

Screwed back on, and so far so good. Still not sure whether it was the firmware upgrade that solved it or whether it was a case of static as @FN-GM suggested that has now dissipated. Still, problem solved, at least for now.

OK, update this morning: came in and tried it after it being off all night, and it worked first time. However, 10 minutes later, the symptom mysteriously started to creep back. I updated the driver software from 10.7.82.0 to 10.7.182.1 and performed a firmware update. Since then, it seems to be running fine. I had to unscrew the bottom of the board temporarily to reroute a USB cable for the update (the USB cable was going through the ECP of the Unifi projector, which you have to disconnect to do a firmware update). The cable is now running back through the ECP again and its still working... but I haven't rescrewed the board yet. Will update once I;ve done that - hopefully there won't be any change.

It's duplicated, and I spent a distressingly long time making sure it was flush & level given that at the end of the process it seems to be up the spout. My gut also tells me the board is DOA, and I have already resigned myself to a sorry call to Steljes tomorrow, but was desperately hoping there might be a quick fix for this one.

Yes, the Fine orient is the 20-point one (at least in the newer versions of the driver). There is also an 80-point one tucked away in the tools section, but I normally only do that for small adjustments where a teacher is after very high accuracy.

Hey all. Just installed a new Smartboard 685 today and I can't get it to orient correctly. Have gone through even the Fine orient and while the orient completes OK, any press with finger or pen afterwards registers as being at the correct vertical position, but always on the far left edge of the screen - it ignores the horizontal position completely. Haven't done a huge amount of diagnostic yet as I only found the problem at the end of the day, but wondering if anyone has seen this before and knows what it is?
