Nothing predefined that I know of, but you could set up an Event Viewer Task on the DC to execute an action when the appropriate login event is recorded in the Security log. You would need to specify the task on each DC though, as there's no way of knowing which one will process the logon.

They've been saying profiles are coming to Apps accounts 'soon' since March. I'm not holding my breath. The fact they talk specifically about personal accounts here makes it sounds much more like they are talking about integration with their other web apps, not actual Google Apps accounts.

I have formally agreed with SMT here that we replace the projector instead of the bulb for any projector which is either 5+ years old, or the replacement bulb price is within £100 of a replacement projector (we have a few very uneconomical models).

I got a letter from them at work last week, completely unprompted, apologising for shoddy service (late delivery in particular) since they introduced a new computer system earlier this year. Personally I don't think that was behind all their problems, but they certainly think it explains some of them. I have to admit that they are gradually moving towards my 'only use if can't find elsewhere' list, which is a pity as I've been using them for work and home for over 10 years. It certainly didn't help that our account manager completely sabotaged our relationship last year by undermining a competing supplier with the wholesaler. All that said, I'd still rather use them than ebuyer, any day.

Might be worth monitoring a machine with Procmon and/or Wireshark to try and determine what its accessing while searching for drivers.

VLC runs with almost no config, so it's really just a case of starting a new project and throwing all the files from the .zip distribution in.

The TUK training is supposed to be a half-day, so it would be a big time increase. I was forced to deliver it in 2x 1 hour sessions to our staff recently due to scheduling problems with SMT, and it felt rushed. Even for a technical audience I don't think I'd be comfortable cutting it down as there's such a huge range of topics to cover. That said, if the time could be found, I'd be more than happy to do it.

Set up: yes. Using: only started really in the last few weeks, the real test will come in September. We plan to mostly use it for the Gmail, with a bit of Sites and Docs.

We used FMS in my last school. It was a truly awful system when I last used it (2 years ago) and it would be nothing short of a miracle if in the intervening time it has somehow improved to the point of being any good. Avoid it. My current school uses WCBS PASS, which elsiegee mentioned above. This is certainly better than FMS, but I still would recommend looking at some others first, especially as PASS development is winding down as WCBS slowly replace it with their new 3Sys product.

BUMP as I'm not sure this got much visibility being posted on a Saturday as it was. If anyone is running the same setup (IIS 7.5 and HAP+ 6.3 or 6.5), can they confirm that this definitely isn't happening for them (check the file size before and after upload)? And if so, which IT deity they are currently aligned to?

I'd like to agree its down to inferior testing, but I just have trouble believing that the same company that can put out such polished products as they do would be that bad at programming on a different platform.

I'm pretty sure Apple sabotage iTunes on Windows deliberately to drive Mac sales, as I'm told the Mac version is not nearly as problematic.

Patriot Act trumps pretty much everything. Including congressional oversight, if recent press coverage is to be believed. Or rather, the execution of powers granted under the Patriot Act trumps everything. There is debate ongoing over whether some of the activity going on under the guise of the Patriot Act is actually legal or not.

My guess would be that the auto-logout after x minutes is confused and thinks you've hit the time limit far too early. Is it just IE onsite? Or offsite too?

From what we were told on the Edugeek Windows 7 event just before it was launched, Microsoft's own internal domain is surprisingly un-restrictive. Most employees build their workstation themselves from a base WDS image and have full admin rights to their own machine. I remember thinking at the time that explained a lot! To be honest, I've had very few problems with setup or lockdown of our Windows 7 network. You do have to approach some things from a slightly different angle to XP, but we had a successful Vista deployment in my last school so I had plenty of practice in advance. I think a lot of people have had bad habits ingrained from having XP for so long, or just aren't used to thinking about how to achieve a particular goal because they always done it a particular way with XP.

Pretty much what it says on the tin. If it's stored on a cloud service controlled by a US company, the data can be seized under US law. Microsoft UK's MD took a question at the Office 365 launch about whether EU-stored data could be seized under the US Patriot Act, and if so, whether customers would be notified. The answer was "yes, and "maybe" respectively, pointing out that just like any other company, they have to comply with local laws: (Full article) Hopefully this will finally put paid to the FUD that keeps being perpetuated about how Office 365 is somehow magically better in terms of Data Protection than Google Apps. It's not. They both kinda suck.

Just to confirm, I've rolled back to 5.4.5 on the same server and same IIS settings (other than the Web.config, of course), and the problem is not exhibited on that version.

Had an odd problem reported to me last week that I have now been able to reproduce. When uploading any file in Extended mode, the files are padded with extra NULL bytes up to the value of the Size on disk as reported by Windows Explorer. For example, a file uploaded that was 11.9 KB (12,246 bytes) became 12.0 KB (12,288 bytes). For some files (e.g. JPEG files) this doesn't seem to affect them, but when trying to open an affected Word document, Word 2010 detects file corruption and will not open the file. I've reproduced this on 6.3, and 6.5. I am on IIS 7.5, and not running behind a reverse proxy.

They are good, but unfortunately the only reason the queue is so short is because so few people are using them. Once everybody starts using them the queue will be just as long as the normal ones. Same thing happened with self-service check-in, 5 years ago you could use the kiosk and then walk straight down the bag drop, but now everybody and his brother is using it.
