You only get telephone support via a PIN that is specific to your account, and they won't discuss any other account (pending or otherwise) unless you have the PIN. They also aren't especially knowledgeable anyway in my experience. My advice is to submit the request from scratch again. I have heard of them getting lost.

We have a couple of the InFocus ones, and they are alright, but not stellar. They aren't suitable for bright rooms in my experience, as the wands have tracking problems when there isn't a good contrast level, but that may be particular to to the brand. I also wouldn't install anything that can't be used with fingers in any classroom below Year 5.

Agree. The death of Flickr started with their failure to keep innovating. Say what you want about Facebook's relentless redesigns, but Flickr looks and works almost exactly the same as it did 4 years ago - or at least it did 3 months ago when I cleared out my Pro account and uploaded all my photos to SkyDrive instead. Ever since Facebook came along I used Flickr only as an archive, and SkyDrive gives me that for free. LiveJournal went the same way. Mrs AT still uses it, and in nearly 10 years (no, really), they have barely added any useful features - and the less said about how dated it looks now, the better. In that time WordPress has gone from not even existing to the most used blogging system in the world.

What error message (if any) does it produce when crashing?

I tend to use InstEd as it will actually let you save over .mst files when you modify them, instead of insisting you save to a new filename. Its also generally a bit friendlier to sue as it will add dropdowns to some columns with a list of valid values, and any column that takes bitflags normally has a nice dialog letting you tick the required properties instead of working out the bitflags yourself.

I've just reproduced this here under our pupil accounts, and the complication I've found is that according to RegEdit, they don't have permission to set values in that registry key in the first place: I ran a ProcMon trace, and the problem is that the process that sets this value in the registry it is not running under their user account. It's a svchost.exe process run under the NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE account. I suspect denying write access to that account will cause problems.

Have to say I'm a little surprised by the number of people saying the same things went on when they were at school. I don't remember girls being held down and molested, or boys collecting pictures of girls chests with their name written on them and using them for blackmail. Am I the only one whose secondary school wasn't full of perverts?

The NSPCC released a study yesterday that is being picked up by the media today. If you haven't read it, I'd encourage you to do so: it's a sobering read: A qualitative study of children, young people and 'sexting' - NSPCC What I don't encourage you to do is just read the media reports on it, because as usual they have picked up on the worst aspects of the study and almost completely ignored the context. That isn't to say that what the study reports on is not shocking, because it is, but in my mind the incredibly limited scope of the study throws serious doubt on how typical the behaviour they found truly is. The study covered a grand total of 2 London schools, and does itself state: "Caution" is not the word I'd use. The schools were hand-picked by the researchers, and while they claim to cover a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and were in mixed socio-economic status population areas, the report crucially states that "both schools are located in geographical areas associated with gang activity and crime". At the risk of sounding prejudiced, that's exactly the sort of area I'd expect to find the worst sorts of behaviour that they did in fact find, and I strongly suspect the researchers knew that very well when they picked those schools. As an example of the worst case scenario, it's excellent. But I would not use it to make generalisations at all, let alone with caution.

I've deployed Netgear business wireless in the past (though not those models) and it's pretty shonky compared to Ruckus. We're gearing up for a wireless project here over the summer and I intend to compare solutions from Ruckus, UniFi, and Meraki. They all have different price points, but I know the performance will probably vary greatly so will be making detailed functional comparisons to determine which is the best value. tl;dr: Comparing on price alone is a mistake. Make sure the keeper of the purse understands this.

Well, I received my One X from Amazon on Monday and can happily report that so far I've had none of the above mentioned/linked problems. Battery life doesn't seem too bad by my standards, even before I got the 1.29 firmware upgrade last night. It lasts considerably longer than Mrs AT's (3 month old) Samsung Galaxy S2, which seems to eat battery for no good reason. Of course, I have now jinxed myself and by the weekend I expect my phone will have literally melted itself down.

I'm pretty sure there are no server logs. There might be something in the event log of a workstation that the student logged in to when the box popped up. In all likelihood the student did what 90% of people do when a box pops up with an OK button - click the OK button without even thinking (let alone reading it). They probably genuinely do not remember seeing the message box. To be honest though, unless you have pastoral responsibilities as part of your job role, I would refer the parent to Form Tutor/HoY or SMT.

I used to have such foul luck with firmware upgrades that my previous NM actually forbade me from running firmware upgrades for the remainder of my employment. Any time we needed firmware upgrading, I had to ask someone else to do it!

The problems you might face are probably more about teaching than they are about technology. For example: how long are your lessons? If you have short lessons (ours are 35 mins), you will have problems without a dedicated suite. The benefits of walking into an ICT suite to find all the computers ready to go that instant cannot be understated when you are working to a schedule. Spending just 5 minutes setting up laptops and 5 minutes packing them up eats away 29% of a 35 minute lesson. That's a big waste compared to 2 mins logging on in an ICT suite and 20s to log off at the end. Of course, many primaries have longer lessons than this (or don't have strict lesson times at all) so this may not be an issue for you, but if it is, ignore it at your peril. Some of our teachers are also enthusiastic about the benefits of taking their class to a different setting sometimes instead of bringing the technology to their normal classroom. Involving your teachers in discussion the pedagogical aspects is crucial if you want the change to be successful and accepted.

Take a look at some of the groups in the Built-in container in the root of your AD. I think you should be able to achieve at least some of what you're after by adding the appropriate users to some of those groups (Event Log Readers and Performance Monitor Users in particular spring to mind).

I'd be more concerned about why it's not working via Group Policy, as that is easily the most reliable method I know of. Does the key already exist or does it need to be created at the same time?

This just makes me want to scream. I remember what a PITA it was with XP having to manage different editions of OEM-supplied DVD software (PowerDVD, how I loathe thee). VLC is fine for playback but nothing beats Media Player for simplicity. This seems like a backwards step made too early, given the amount DVDs are still used. I was already annoyed at Media Center being removed in all editions (we use it all the time at home), and this just makes me even more irritated. I'd be willing to bet the planned "Windows 8 Media Center Pack" isn't something we can buy in bulk and deploy either. I hate to admit it, but the case for us upgrading is getting weaker with every announcement at the moment.

We used Adobe from about Year 9/10 onwards in my last school, but we also started using some of the Serif packages for price reasons, and they are less complicated to use. Try not to go with the "industry standard" argument; pick what works best for teaching in your setting. The skills should be transferable anyway.
