IANAL, but in my opinion the former outweighs the latter here. Without getting into the technicalities, the parent generally has a right to see data that relates to their child. Just because the data also relates to someone else doesn't negate that right. If you want a watertight opinion, simply ask the ICO what their opinion is. You may not want to hear this, but my top tip for installing SCE is "don't". I used it here for a year before getting sick of it. It doesn't work properly, it's a massive resource hog, and pretty much all the functionality it provides is done better by other, usually free tools. Local Update Publisher in particular is an awesome bit of freeware that allows you to issue your own updates to WSUS using exactly the same API as SCE, and all it requires to be installed on your server is the normal WSUS role Goodbye SCE – I never liked you anyway « The Angry Technician

There's a setting somewhere in the SMARTBoard drivers to tell it not to use the tablet PC emulation. That will send the PC back to 'normal'. The real question is: why does it matter? Having the tablet interface can actually be useful on a SMARTBoard at times (e.g. gestures in IE, press and hold for right click) and I think the onscreen keyboard and handwriting recognition that comes with Window 7 is better than the SMART one. We never had the tickboxes in Explorer issue, so I don't know why that's turned itself on without asking.

Adobe routinely forget to publish updates to the sources they use for mass distribution. I've had to prompt them at least 3 times on Twitter in the last year to update the ones you get via the distribution agreement. To their credit, they have fixed it each time, but it shouldn't really be up to customers to tell them this stuff.

The most useful documentation you will read for 4.6 is the Microsoft Application Virtualization Version 4.6 Trial Guide from this page: Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 Documentation Basically it walks you through the steps to install the a basic single-server config of App-V - which for schools is all you need. No fuss, no 'plan your deployment' waffle that goes on for 10 pages, just a straight walkthrough. I've been saying for years that Microsoft should produce guides like this for all their server products. As most people who've read them will agree, most TechNet documentation is pretty hard work to make sense of due to the complexity of trying to include every single scenario and assuming everyone has a datacenter full of servers to work on.

Whether you are capable of doing it and whether they should be asking you are two different things in my opinion. I do small to medium cabling jobs in house as I had a lot of training on it in my last school by people with years of experience. It's very easy to do cabling badly if you have not been properly trained (or even if you have). I've certainly seen enough contractors doing a rubbish job to know that's true. However, we still get contractors in to do the trunking for bigger jobs, and then I will feed and terminate the cable. As @teejay says, you need to have the right tools (including testing kit), you need to know the regs, and your employer absolutely must have the right insurance to do this in house. This is not a job to be treated as 'DIY'. If this sort of works is a) not in your JD, and b) was not mentioned at interview, then it's not on for them to insist on it when you have no prior experience. Consult your union.

I used the driver from the Dell site. It's horrible because it doesn't have an .inf installer that works, so you are stuck with the rubbish Atheros client utilities, but it does provide connectivity. I was able to flash to A04 from within Windows 8. I don't recall issuing command line params, but I may have launched the utility from an elevated prompt. P***-poor performance, basically. The Atom processor does it no favours whatsoever and even the SSD doesn't seem to help - suspect they used a cheap one with poor read/write speeds. As a standalone device it is fine, but as a domain-joined workstation it struggles.

I would join, but would prefer it to be a professional body representing the sector rather than taking on a union-like role. Existing unions have much more experience of the legal protection side of things, which aren't specific to the job.

It's not impossible, but if it was withdrawn, that would normally filter through to existing WSUS installations and the update would be expired or superseded. It's still showing as a valid update on mine. Are you syncing the Updates category as well as Security Updates? It is listed under the former.

@TechSupp: This update was released to WSUS on 14/02/2012. If Folder Redirection is only breaking now, you are either pretty late installing updates, or it's not that causing your problem. I know it hasn't caused any issues for us.

phpMotion has been discussed in the past for this sort of thing, and I'm also hearing good things about MediaCore recently. I think we have users of both on here who should be able to give more informed opinions.

We run an after-school club here that is attended mostly by Year 5, and they are getting on great with it. We have found a few bugs, but usually they are triggered by specific things that we warn the pupils abut once we've figured it out.

If you have a Smoothwall there are settings on the device that can help with it, without the need to write your own scripts if I'm not mistaken. Give Smoothwall support a ring and they should be able to walk you through it.

Which driver are you using? We use the UFR driver with our Canon machines, and that one seems to work best for us.
