Do you have any torrent client installed? Some of them can flood ports and cause the problems you describe. Check for static IP’s as perhaps you have the same as another machine? Or if it’s DHCP force it into a unique static IP. There is always the possibility the network card its self is faulty.

I see the cloud as online storage. For example Steam backups saved games to the cloud. Whatever PC you log into your saved games move with you. A work example would be dropbox. You have a folder on different computers that are all linked via online storage. Whatever you dump into that folder shows up on in the same folder on all linked computers. That folder is in the cloud so to speak. A cloud is more than just online back it’s a link to the same files between different computers. The cloud also tends to be relative automatic. Another example would be logging into a web browse on different computers with a cloud based system that moved your favourites around with you.

Same problem here.

I have an x64 Server 2008 with drivers for the printer. We tried all sorts of drivers even the generic Epson driver. The server cannot print although it appears to; just nothing comes out the printer. Both 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win 7 cannot print via the server. Our old 32-bit Server 2003 works fine and local 32-bit machines can print directly to the printer or via the 32-bit server. We don’t have any 64-bit machines to test with. When I get a bit of time in a few weeks it will be worth trying your idea of a local 64-bit machine printing directly via TCP/IP.

32-bit works fine but when I try and print from 64-bit the work appears in the print queue and vanishes as though it’s been sent to the printer. But nothing comes out. Both me and a support tech from county tried and failed to get it working and Epson just say its not supported.

The drivers do exist but when we tried them they didn’t work. First we used the Epson chat screen and they said the drivers are not officially supported. Next we rang up and got the same message. There was zero interest in helping us to get the drivers working.

Not sure on age. It’s the Epson AcuLaser C4200DTN one of the main laser printers they sell. There are no newer or better replacement versions.

Would you call Epson cheap unbranded crap? I just found out the hard way they don’t support 64-bit and the drivers they have don't work. I figured I would upgrade our server to Win Server 2008 64-bit and no clients can print to it due to the lack of workinig driver support. It’s not just the cheap unbranded stuff there is a surprising amount of larger brands that don’t offer support. Some offer drivers but not support if the drivers fail to work.

I tried out an SSD in my own machine and it went so well I bought some for my home computers. The only thing I would say is watch out for which SSD’s you buy. Some of the cheaper ones are really poor and will slow down your system or cause shuttering issues. The other problem is recovering files from a broken SSD is next to impossible, even recovering deleted files is not easy so keep good backups. Next I plan to place some in at least two older desktops as a trail to see how much difference it makes. I suspect SSD’s should add a fair bit of life to older computers. In short the overall experiances has been good. EDIT: Avoid putting them into machines that suffer from regular power cuts. SSD’s don’t seem to handle sudden power loss as well as old style drives. I wouldn’t want an SSD in a laptop with a dud battery.

For us the Iphones started working late last week. Still no luck with school emails on BlackBerrys.

It sounds doable, at the very least they can open up the PC and reset the bios that way with the jumpers. I guess unless you pad lock it. Once in it’s a simple matter of using a boot CD to remove the windows passwords. You could surprise them by having the hard disk encrypted.

At 37 hours during term-time only how would I work out my wage with the new points system?

Thinking about this more I might be much worse off. Have I got this right? Calculated pay is based on SCP x number of weeks pay ÷ 52 weeks. I get paid for 39weeks. So I end up at the top of my scale with a wage of £ 15,148 for a Network Manager!

How did you all do? For me it wasn’t too bad although there are some really odd results. Financial resources are a 2 Emotional demands is a 1 Working Conditions 1 Everything else is pretty much spot on. But those three seem way off to me as I work directly with children with behaviour and learning problems. Financial resources I would have said is a 3.

Thanks, getting a little worried but as a Network Manager at fewer than 20k surly I cannot lose more. Lets hope we all get a pay rise (wishfull thinking I know)

Has anyone got phones to sync with exchange? I followed these instructions Apple iPhone • Go to Settings • Choose 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' • Click 'Add Account...' • Choose 'Microsoft Exchange' • Enter your 1c1n email address • Enter 'schools' in the domain field • Enter your normal 1C1N username and password • Click Next • Wait for it to attempt to verify.... • Now enter the server 'mail.nottscc.gov.uk' and click Next • Choose the things you want to sync (probably all) and click Done All I get is Exchange Account verification failed.

The only email problem we have is Blackberries can no longer access school email without buying expensive 3rd party software. A lot of unhappy people about that change. Anyone figured out how to access and edit your own school website? wh01-node4.nottscc.gov.uk doesn’t seem to offer any login box like the old ftp site did.

So far so good but not looking forward to the next bit. They are insisting we need a new larger cabinet, fair enough as it is packed; only I cannot see how a larger one can fit. 3 people have come in and looked with photos taken. When they rang up to confirm the date for the install I asked them to double check the photos and all is ok according to them. There is no space under or above the cab not even half a CM and the wall cannot take much more weight. I am really not looking forward to that install. I think we had one unannounced visit. On the whole everyone rang in first and been pretty good.

That’s one powerful GPU roughly between x8 to x10 more powerful then what’s in the current Iphones and Ipads. Perhaps a lot more if they boost the Mhz rating due to a die shrink.

You can have someone on say a 20k wage but due to various reasons have a fully paid off house with zero mortgage and perhaps even some savings. Without the mortgage you have far more disposable income a month and you don’t need to watch money as closely as someone on 50k+ with a mortgage. On the more extreme end you have those without a mortgage and who don’t drive to work but have a car. That persons living style and disposable income can be much higher than someone with 50k wage, driving and a mortgage. Surly the person on the lower wage in this case would live the higher class of living style. What about those that take a high paid for 10 or a few years then go down to a sub 10k or sub 20k job? Are they working class or middle class? Isn’t the class system more than money as well?

My current special school doesn’t really use much as its more behaviour problems here. My last special school used a wide collection of bits from Inclusive Technology - All the Help You Need Many years ago I was a member of a switch clinic were we came up with ways for disabled children to access computers and the world around them. We assessed children and provided equipment. Now I am most likely a little rusty bit if it helps feel free to PM me a few more details and I will see what I can come up with.

I think I can see what’s wrong. A person with a 100k house fully paid off and 20k in savings is classed as having less wealth then someone with a 150k house with 1% paid off and 0k in savings.

This test seems odd. Make a fake email up and put in some details that might not be not true like well under 30years old, have a fully paid off house with zero mortgage and something crazy like 50k in savings. Pretty impressive I would say for an under 30 year old. Then the end result you get is “Your financial resources are about the same as the average person in the UK. Find out more below.” EDIT: To top it off I got a culture rating of 10/100 not bad for someone that’s explored the world and been to many different cultures.

The last PC batch here was around £518 Exc. VAT per machine. We used to get cheaper ones but I found spending a little more makes the machine feel far more responsive and last much longer over the years. £200 to £300 budget PC just don’t tend to last 3 or 4 years that well compared to £400 to £500 PC's. Personally I like to do all those little upgrades, £20ish extra for a dual core, £20 ish extra for 2 gig minimum with a slot free for further upgrades in 3 to 4 years times if needed.to.
