Apart from several pilots which were run in the summer term of 2005, from September 05 the old inspection system known by the inspectors as section 10 was replaced with a new framework, section 5. It is this framework that schools are now inspected under. As mentioned in other postings the schools SEF (self evaluation) and PANDA (Performance and Assessment Report) are the main source for the direction in which the inspection will take. If your schools Contextual Value added are good then it is unlikely that the school will fail an inspection its these indicators in the PANDA and what the school judges itself to be, either good or bad at that will determine where the inspection will focus. ICT is looked at but in only as much as does the school make good use of it, both for monitoring progress of pupils, cross the curriculum use etc. The inspection is short and sharp, inspections can start at different times of the week but the head will be informed on the Friday of the preceding week for an inspection where the school visit begins on the Wednesday the two days prior to this the inspectors will be looking at your data and arranging with the Head about meetings and the lessons they intend to observe. Having arrived on the Wednesday they will be finished by the end of Thursday, a draft of the report will be with the school shortly after the inspection, and usually published within a month.

I couldn't agree more Broc, I'm not anti LEA, by far I support there role in schools as they have a closer link with the public locally and are more accountable. Though I do believe that they should be watching these moves carefully not not just sitting there in the belief they are un-touchable, because they are not and will almost certainly have to tender for their current role in providing things like SIMs support.

and also whats stopping the company getting support contract with capita and cutting lea out of admin system... russ This may happen, as Capita seem to manage to win contracts through the dfes no matter how much they mess up. They won the chance to continue running the teachers pension fund even though they had lost millions of pounds worth of teacher’s contributions. I am definatley in the camp that believes LEAs will not be running school admin systems under current conditions but may have to re-tender for the contracts in a world where they will not be able to compete. I believe this because the present Government, which will be backed by the opposition, as they are on the Education bill, wants to give schools more autonomy from LEAs.

Same here, problems with links timing out or internet explorer crashing. Not had any reports of other sites causing these problems.

Like Rich we went for a Targus Wirless Presenter, find the Laser a bit faint but everything else functions well and over distance, from back of School Hall with Laptop at front. Can you boot with extensions off, hold down the shift key while booting and wait for the message which tells you its starting with extensions off. You may also get the extensions manager when you boot like this, you can then turn off extensions using the dropdown menu at the top of its window. If you manage to boot to the desktop then you have an extensions conflict you will need to isolate the extension so that you can then disable it in extensions manager. This use to be done with a package called conflict catcher, but you can also do this manually by turning on each extension one by one until you get the conflict. Sounds like the disk you have used for the iBook is not meant for this laptop?

We have a frog box here and I'm having some serious reservations about its security. Try doing some google searches and you will find a few pages which sit behind a secure login? That have been indexed by google, I have even been able to browse the database entrys for users and groups. All sorts of information which would aid a brute force attack of the server.

A few years ago when I worked in a Language college they used Euro Talk, I seem to remember that there was a Network component that the different language packages were added to. We were using NT4 server at the time and you had to give Domain users more access rights to the share as data is written back to html files for the teacher to assess progress, likewise when users login its recorded in files on the share, no write access and it will not work.

Education bodies that legislate for these issues are aware of the points you raise Beeswax, have you read the Ofsted report on ICT provision, published in 2004 “ICT in schools The impact of government initiatives five years on” Page 17 section 41 states the situation in Primary schools very well. And We can probably all agree on the money that was wasted for teacher training in ICT through the New Opportunities Fund. I’m sure most IT support worker in schools could have delivered training better than a large proportion of the companies which won contracts to deliver this. Discuss.

Tried it in VMware Ric and it was successful, I ran MiniSetup and did not regenerate grace period for activation. The security identifiers were regenerated and the system was set to Shutdown. On restart I only had to insert the CD key as this had been deleted from your sysprep.inf file. Everything was okay I now have a Baines PC in my VMware app.

Could the issue lie with VMWare and using sysprep within the virtual environment? Have you ever been able to sysprep your vmware setup of XP or 2000? I could give this a try if that will help make things clearer.

Does it matter which version you use? M$ brought out a new version of sysprep for SP2. Just a shot in the dark Ric. I cannot see any faults in your sysprep.inf file which would cause any probs.

Take a look at MSAS from http://www.mambosolutions.com. This is an easy to install version of Apache, PHP and MySql which runs from a virtual disk it creates in My Computer. The disk is only present when you run the software so the services are not running on your test PC all the time.

I seem to remember a recent article I read in the press covering the use of Linux by a Manchester school, Parrs Wood, also a specialist college, extolling the virtues of Linux and the costs saved in licences. You may be able to find them on the web, get some advice there. On one of your other points, with my experience of wireless technology I wouldn't want to run thin clients over it, I do not know for certain but I would guess this could be problematic.

The Mac uses what they refer to as managed preferences, similar to the windows profile, not 100% sure but I think you will not be able to make use of these without the Open Directory server running on Os X server.

You can use a local account to log into the machine when not connected to the Domain and a Domain account when it is. You can also do some clever things with Locations Manager.
