It'll be cool if they did register for a port with IANA, but generally you wouldn't get one as it'll only be LAN traffic so they'll tell you to use the user-assignable port range, ie 49152-65535 which is a free-for-all. I guess they picked it as it was in the middle of the range and hopefully free.

Yup, my point was that particular report you can't just schedule, so you have to create one, then process the raw data. You can't just go tell the command reporter to run that report. ie its a faff

That one's a built in report, way I had to do it (back in the day), was create a SIMS report with the raw attendance marks then generate the percentage from the raw data - ie a faff.

Have a word, they, the data manager and co, should be contacting Capita and they, Capita, should be contact them directly. They should only contact you if it's a techy problem and when they do it should be, reinstall SIMS, give permissions for this share. It de-values both the data and the network managers saying they are interchangeable. The person who created the pastoral and the assessment templates probability isn't going to be the same person who created your Active Directory domain. Although it does happen, it shouldn't, you're never gonna be a master of all trades and even if you are, they aren't going to strike lucky when it comes to finding a replacement.

Personally, this is why SOLUS3 was created. The network manager can install SIMS and not worry about SIMS. The data manager can just use SIMS and not worry about network permissions etc. It keeps the two roles defined and seperate. If you've got third party products, the data manager should give you a user\pass for it, they should set it up as they are responsible for the data. It should hopefully stop the scenerio where the network manager gives the third party system manager access (ie administrator access in sims) because they've been dumped on to install some third party product on friday at 6pm which has to be working by Monday.

I think 'how big your pockets are' is the main factor. Pretty much any supplier will meet your requirements for the right price. There is a interest in building something as a community - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/143660-open-source-mis-ideas.html - ironically @zag idea isn't actually open-source (at the moment anyway) - if its open source, the source code should be in the public domain - ie github. If you don't have the budget, might be an idea to open-source what you've got and see what help you get.

SalamanderSoft for the win. Richard was kind enough to demo it to me ages ago and the best description is it just works. Capita's AD Provisioning tool is clunky. You can script something failing that, but SalamanderSoft product is a nice polished off the shelf solution, highly customable too

I think you've just got to except sloppy coding. SIMS normally is fast? If so be tempted to install fiddler to see if it's making a HTTP\S request and it's waiting for a response or something.

Doesn't matter, when it first loads it needs to load into memory which is disc IO. Also SIMS .net is very much client side - all the business logic is client application. So unless you workstations have 4gb ram and ssd it's gonna take a little while to load up dispite having a beefy server - not that doesn't help!!

Stupid question, they did tell you the hardware requirements are higher on (both the server and client) if you use InTouch? Seem to remember people having to double the amount of RAM the staff machines had.

You forget, Capita uses Microsoft technology. Including Microsoft Time and everybody knows the Whirly-Bar-Of-Doom (WBOD) (TM pending) has a different time schema to that the rest of the world uses and the only way to convert between the two is using a customized delorean.

@cpjitservices - CentraStage - CentraStage. Install a little agent, then creates a HTTPS tunnel which you can RDP\VNC, also has a few other cool features like monitoring, auditing (ie what software is installed, ms patches etc) and software deployment.

You may have joked an my motation of open-source becoming more wide spread in the enterprise, but the age old argument of Microsoft would never do it has just gotten a great big hole - they've released Dot Net, as open source, on GitHub (https://github.com/aspnet) no less! No only does this mean DotNet will appear on Mac OSX and Linux (Ubuntu?), but you can also dev andriod apps out of the box using Visual Studio - AND they are still doing a free verson of VS, across the platforms. Ah B2B, I don't miss dealing with that!! I've heard rumours that the new v4 will solve alot of problems, but I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. Meanwhile, you can set SIMS to use ONE for address validation, you can also setup B2B to ping data back to schools so they can accept your changes - its another B2B\Windows Schedule Task however - aka another thing to go wrong. We found the default one messes up, something to with the county?? (don't quote me on that, it's been a while, someothing about the default one being different to ONE - which uses Royal Mail PAC - hey, it's one thing to be able to find them on a map, its another to be able to post them a letter ), if I remember right this will only valid new\amendments, they have a bulk valid patch but I'm not sure if they validates against ONE or the other one. Sure @PhilNeal will be more help

Sure your not thinking of WinFolder or the grey pads rather then the full MIS solution @glen_j @andypandy - Pretty sure Capita should provide you with a nice list of what can and can't be migrated - they go into legal mode when it comes to data migration so ensure everything you want is listed as will migrate.

Surely you've whitelisted all RBCs like LGfL outbound IPs where you have a standing data sharing agreement (for break\fix purposes) with the LA's?
