Man in the know says the UI has a reinstall option, this will push down the GUID. So still not fixed @PhilNeal, sounds like your guys have a few good ideas how to get over the GUID problem, just need to get on and do it now, perhaps offer them a bit of overtime - it is dragging on a bit now!

Nope, no limit. I've had a few thousand without any problems. Check the log file, might give a clue to why its crashing out.

You might want to get someone to expand on that Phil - if your saying the s3 server now issues the guid to the agent, or its no longer used in 3.9, then your basically saying all the above discussion is useless as you can just install the agent. Which is pretty significant and a real plus.

Contradicting yourself a bit there mate - like I said, if you don't want to use S3 to deploy to the clients and you've got something like SCCM, heck, use it, use s3 to just download and keep the db updated etc, if you don't, then use SOLUS3 to do it all. I know what you mean @SovietRussia, but I know why they did and I still think it was a bit of broken logic, even when I first found out about it. As for @IWDave comment about IPv6, its an IPv6 ready app, if its enabled but not configured (correctly) it will cause problems, but again, this is a Windows thing, Microsoft has set IPv6 by default, so if you have a dual stack network - ie both IPv4 and IPv6, Windows by default, will send everything over IPv6. @tockwell it's been in production for many years now, I was harping on about more people engaging with it during the beta, back in 2009, when they had more developers assigned to it. It would have resolved a lot of the issues if we had more people engaged from the off. I'm sure @PhilNeal will be happy to pass on your feedback Data can be migrated, training, well it's always evolving so that'll happen even if you stick with SIMS. As for systems that hang off it, I'm prob not the right guy to ask, I'll get pretty much anything working. We're switching out a lot large incumbent legacy systems then SIMS. If you're using SIMS its because its the best for your school, otherwise you'll be looking at switching your MIS

When you install S3 you (well you did when I last did it), ran 3 MSIs, 1 was the UI, you run that on your workstation, point it at the s3 server and bingo*. * Assuming permissions etc

It's makes me worried about a QA\Tester wouldn't have thought to have tried this! Why don't you install it on your workstation and cut this step out? No, no they are not. If you school doesn't want to use SIMS, then don't use SIMS. The government isn't forcing you to use SIMS. Your LA isn't forcing you to use SIMS. Fact. As for the whole SCCM debate, look at the MS Office vs OpenOffice, you think people will be happy with more MS lock in. Also you have to remember most of Capita's schools are small primary schools, they want something simple and free. If you don't want to use SOLUS3 to install to your desktops, then don't, extract installers and package it, just use it to download the updates and keep your DB upgrade. They aren't forcing you to use it to deploy to your clients. If it still bothers you that much, there are plenty of third parties who do a managed service who would take the support off your hands, Capita even offers hosted SIMS in Azure.

It's because the user needs administrator rights to register the old COM files, the answer is to use SOLUS3 as the S3 agent service does the installing rather then the user.

You can also download SIMS Bulk Import for free that will allow you to bulk import from a flat file such as CSV or an Excel Spreadsheet directly into SIMS .net - https://simsbulkimport.uk/. Currently only Single text line works, but more UDF types are being added.

Nothing wrong with installing Express. Once you've installed it, just drop the disc in and select upgrade edition, takes less then 5 mins to "upgrade" and remove those pesky limits. Worth using express as Capita do a good job answering some of the pesky options - like enabling TCP\IP.

I'm guessing only read - you need update on the [solus3].[agent] table. If I get a chance I'll create a new version that'll splat out the exact error message to confirm - Unless some lovely GitHub person does it for me

Personally switching UAC off is rubbish, if it was an issue, right click, run as administrator. More then likely its a cache copy of a file in the virtual store if it is a "UAC" problem. Firewalls, not so much, Windows Firewall is ok, its the blasted AV firewalls that are the issue, they vary so much, I've know one particular AV firewall to still be active even when you've switched it off, you have to physically uninstall the damn thing!! I've even had it reinstall it when an update came out. So yer, I think it's reasonable to ask to try disabling\removing client side firewall when diag'ing a connectivity problem or even a performance problem. So long as its only temporary!

File server is generally s:\sims, its where the legacy stuff goes which you share via a Windows Share c:\program files\sims\sims .net is the client application directory. Unless something changed, but then, why would you share your something from your protected program files folder :S

I was talking in the context of a selling a MIS system. I'm not saying quick and dirty code doesn't happen, its just you wouldn't want to do it if you were building a MIS system - even in single school things changes, just thinking about how much of a pain it would be if you hardcoded it all and they wanted to switch to a 2 week timetable from a 1 week. Heck, even look at @rpwillis stuff, if it was me, a scripter, I wouldn't have been able to bolt on half as much as he has because he's a far superior developer. @psydii - Developer to Customer ratio, maybe one for @GREED questionnaire (he currently has "How many staff do you employ per customer")
