Its called FDS (Finance Database Selector) - if its more then two FMS databases then you'll need to buy a license. It has a few quirks but it works.

Depends, I still know schools that open SIMS a few times a week. Admittedly they are small primary schools, but still a day (or so) of downtime is still better for them then having to apply patches "all the time". Also there are other options then DIY SIMS/Capita hosted SIMS.

Depends. I know an LA that hosts just the databases centrally and I know an LA that host the whole thing and they just RDP into it. I think that latter is a better option.

Agreed, but 1st rule is you don't run analysis reports against your transactional production system. It'll just just smash your indexes and kill any performance you once had. You run it against your warehouse. It also makes sense to not limit yourself to just your data - how can you predict if changing to a 2-week timetable will improve your pupils education without actually doing it? There are companies out there who have built cloud warehouses, whats the point of creating your own when you can just buy it? Especially if the cost is the same 20 days a year - thats assuming you can even find someone with the skills AND for min wage!!

2015 supports work accounts. Pro you can slap in a key it and it works - not sure if this is covered under the free dreamspark?? Have you got twitter? Worth asking on there

This is a pain and its stupid as its per-user, per-machine. The pro version doesn't have this issue. Also are you using VS 2013? VS 2015 supports work accounts, so if you're using Office365 it just works

Assuming this is a IT role. I'd asked if they have remote access during the interview stage, try and tease it out. If they haven't, then follow it up with "its a pretty standard 9-5 role then?" - ie you're not going to get calls after you've gone home. If it is, its a strong indication they want someone 9-5 and aren't going to be happy with you doing flexi time. Talk to the receptionist, fountain of information. Stuff like this and extra ££ you'd do once you've been offered the job but before you've accepted. You're unlikely to get a pay rise in the first year - ever, so its worth asking for it when they just want you to start (they'll be fedup with the recruit process at this stage) then a year in when its easier for them to say no then it is to say yes. Its also worth asking about your work pattern - if your always in on Monday early and leave early on Friday (or whatever), that isn't flexi working and its more likely if they're in the dark ages! Anyway, good luck with the job interview!

Nope. Capita Partnership Xchange is based on SIF but its heavy modified. Its like saying Microsoft is based on Unix.

SIF is just a protocol. ZIS is the server. You still need a client to pull data from SIMS (or a.no.other MIS). Maybe one for @GREED or @penfold_99. So yes, folks have used it to transfer data around, like GroupCall Xporter

Not surprised they can replicate it - just surprised they bothered! Yes, if you've got a standalone workstation with dbattach installed you can connect to sql and do a backup. Failing that SQL cmds, personally I'd do it on the server - mainly to check you've got enough disc space - I know I've done it remotely before after the technician said he had tbs and tbs on the s drive only to find it was installed on the c: drive and it filled it the disc!

Out of interest, do you use Twitter to publish information like the school is closed today because of flooding? And if you did, would parents accept that or would they then check the website or phone the school? What would you do if someone maliciously did that? Whats the impact? I think Twitter is working down in turns of potentially affect users - from millions down to tens of thousands and schools aren't quite at that level... Yet. Also its alot of admin cost doing it. In theory they could use edubase data to for school website url then craw it looking for twitter ids, but edubase isnt always up to date, nor is nominet data and that still only works for the UK
