Plain pci is old, old - i doubt it'll be capable of the throughput required for hdmi. Do you mean pci-e x4 or x1? Vs pci-e x16. Pretty sure most pci-e x16 work in a x4 slot, just slower. Can you post the model no of the old one?

I'm sure they'd thought about it. All schools have access to the current API (technically), its just the level of entry is pretty high. A school wouldn't be able to afford a development team, so if they do any sort of development corners will be cut - such as single point of failure (ie you leave and no-one can pick it up without recruiting someone on mega bucks), not having someone with the correct skills - I'm shocked by how few professionals don't use version control but i digress. If you look at the way Microsoft has gone with PowerBI - the custom visuals - the framework, code examples are all completely free. Anyone can build something, but if you want to promote it production in the gallery, you code has to be validated. Now Microsoft don't charge, but they have only a handful submissions, have more money and developer resource. So I suspect Capita will charge to get something out of sandbox, which they kinda already do. I know some of you folks will argue, but lets face it, some idiot committed his private key for Amazon and we all laughed as "hackers" spun up thousands of vps and run up a a massive bill, but what happens if that happens to say GroupCall (unlikely as it is) or the DfE? You can bet folks will be blaming Capita for giving them access as hackers suck out all the data. So yer, I think Capita will need to vet them and they'll most likely charge - plus its Capita. They'll charge.

Question, in terms of your MIS, Sims .net, Capita. A profit making company can offer it to a primary school for £500 pa - thats alot less £7.50 a day, thats assuming they can fit it all into that 2 core / 4gb ram, you have to question if your just lift and shifting rather then adapting? I agree about costs, but Capita won't be making a loss. (Also I hope they've got their name down on the first adopters of Microsoft UK data centre !)

And you can ping the domain name (both short and fqdn) from the sims server?

Not for supply teacher. Supply teachers should have their own proper AD account, they should have this linked to your MIS system. What you want to do is get identity management (IDM) solution, so cover supervisor books them, adds their details into the MIS (like SIMS) - then IDM solution then automatically provisions the AD account etc in a predefined way (cough SalamanderSoft). One of the reasons you want to do it, is AD accounts aren't your problem, they are setup correctly, every time. From the non-IT side they aren't having to wait for IT. The reason they should be (mainly aiming this at supply staff) in the MIS (SIMS most likely) is if they work 28 days or more over the year, you'll most likely have to include them in the Workforce Census.

If you follow this discussion to its nature logically technical conclusion you would end up with SIMS hosted. The reason it isn't is political, not technical. SIMS can be remarkably efficient if you tune it, if you build a warehouse you won't KO your indexes/caching when you run a full year attendances for the whole school for example. The cost saves in terms of infra for a individual school, if they moved to Azure and auto-scaled isn't worth the effort. You'll get better cost savings with the economy of scale - ie 1 sql server shared with n number of schools Your right @pcstru, there is a cost in terms of not locking into hardware, but you would still have to prove its not a application problem but your chosen hardware. Again, Capita doesn't support sql, just the their database. If you have a cluster - and again, this should be hosted LA or a company not a school, you should have a experienced SQL dba. Having a good DBA is £50k, plus you need more then one (for failover) so you're talking about £200k bill in staff costs for true 100% uptime. What schools really want is say >10mins whilst the vm moves to over host

Wrong, capita has no list. If you system is running slow, they SHOULD investigate that its not their software - check your database doesn't need reindexing the log file isnt huge. Once they are happy its your environment, they'll tell you as such and you have go fix it (or get you third party too) Put it another way, if I was HP (or whoever) and my server was on Capita list of not recommended, I'd be suing the arse of Capita.
