We moved away from smoothwall a long time ago and have been with fortigate (400F atm) ever since.

We only give our staff Apple Pencils and they have asset tags on. If a member of staff needs a replacement then they get an old one (luckily this doens't happen often). Students do bring their own Apple Pencils in and we do get a lot handed in wihout names or anything on. We ask students to bring their original box in or if they can get the serial number of the pen, then we can check it with the box of Apple Pencils we have.

I have similar issues on my machine but hasn't bothered me enough to look into it. If I right click to copy/paste it doesn't work and tells me to install an addon but if I use Ctrl + C and Ctrl +v it works fine.

Home/Offsite Filtering for DEP'd MDM'd Pupil iPads
RLR replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We push out a pac file that points to our php proxy server. This then forces users to sign into a portal via our firewall for them to be filtered correctly. -
[ipad] Apple School Manager - Paying by credit card not working
RLR replied to Theldron's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I don't think you can use paypal in ASM. I only get the option to use Card or store credit. We've started using the Store Credit option as finance prefere it. We go to a reseller such as academia and ask for £100 worth of store credit and pay them via PO. -
Fortinet echo system - your opinions
RLR replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We do this with our student iPads. We push out a PAC file that forces their connection to authenticate with our firewall to give them filtering offsite. -
Fortinet echo system - your opinions
RLR replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We just upgraded our Fortigate to a newer model (400F). We've been with them for years and seems to work really well. We have key word searches setup for reporting. These go to the various DSLs for each of our sites. We have FortiAnalyzer which looks to be similar to FastVue (although FastVue seems to do more so might look into this!). We have a support contract for our Firewall in case we need extra help. We currently use Aruba Access Points and Aruba Switches so can't comment on the FortiAPs. -
I don't think you can link SIMS directly to Google. You would have to create a script to pull a report from SIMS and then script the creation of classes/accounts/teachers via Google's API (GAM Advanced). I strongly recommend looking into getting Salamander as they can do all this and a lot more and is only around £1000 a year.

Google workspace - Force MFA if school IP isn't detected - Is this possible?
RLR replied to Jaan's topic in Cloud Services
I think this option is only available for Microsoft logins. This is not possible for Google Logins unless you redirect Google to use Microsoft. -
The known issue says it can't find the printer but Ops post suggests they can send things to the printer and release it but nothing happens.

Not much help but I just tested this on my work iphone which I've updated to ios 17 and seems to be okay.

You can setup a USB key for offline access. This works on your every day machine but not really on virtual servers.
-
We use the free version of Duo. It's free up to a maxiumum of 10 users. We use it for servers and our main workstations.
-
We've had MFA on for all students from Year 7 upwards for a few years now. It's only really possible because our students are 1:1 with iPads. I feel it will be difficult to force implement it without some sort of 1:1 device setup.
-
I would assume this is only personal google accounts. We have several generic accounts that people only have deligate access to and don't actually login to them.

I use PDQ Deploy/Inventory that runs on a schedule but also on heartbeat. So when the machine first comes online, it will try to update adobe.

We're looking at ordering this now. We've been quoted around £2k.

If you do plan on moving you need to make sure that everyone is aware that there will be big changes in the way of working and it might be frustrating at first trying to figure everything out but it's defiantly worth it in the long run. You don't want to tell SLT that they need to change MIS if they're not on board as they'll be quick to point fingers when it doesn't work the same.

You may have seen this already as this was a few months ago now: https://bringmoredata.blogspot.com/2022/12/mis-market-moves-winter-2022-what-did.html?m=1 Not sure if there is a more recent one yet.

Talk to me about Broadband and Filtering!
RLR replied to Zammo's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We just upgraded to a 10G line and our backup is 1G. We have a co-managed Fortinet firewall. Our students are 1:1 with iPads and we push out a pac file that redirects their traffic to our firewall so all their traffic off the network still goes through our Fortinet filtering. As far as I'm aware, offsite filtering for iOS is difficult to achieve with some sort of agent as it usually requires the devices to use a bespoked browser. This is a restriction on Apples side unless it has changed in the last couple of years. -
How do we go about paying for this? We'll most likley go for the lifetime license so would like to get the discounted price. Do/will you take purchase orders?

Are you including the "<>" in the command? I don't think this is needed. gam user [email protected] delete messages query "rfc822msgid:[email protected]" doit
-
There's two ways I can think of with Google: 1. Security Investigation Tool - This does require a premium version of Google Workspace such as Education Plus. 2. Use GAM - If you don't have this already you should defiantly start looking into it. It massivley helps managing Google domains. We've put some measures in place to try stop staff emailing the wrong users but it still happens. Some examples: making it so only managers of a group can email student year groups. Creating content compliance rules to stop users emailing specific groups based on naming convention.
