...finally got this working. For the record, esm.catglobal.com port 443 is still showing "filtered", so that was a red herring. Thanks again for the feedback.

Aaarrrrghhhh! Been trying to get this working for weeks now, with the Head and the Exams Officer regularly emailing me "urgent" messages. Problem is that EdExcel insist the issue is due to Norfolk County Council's firewall, and Norfolk County Council insist the problem is EdExcel. So, if you have this infernal program working, I would be extremely grateful if you could try the following. * * * * * If you do a Google search for "microsoft portqryui", you'll find a port-testing program. It's pretty straightforward; just download it, unzip it, and run it. In the "Destination IP" box, type "www.catglobal.com". Choose "Manually input query ports", and type 80 (TCP). Then click "Query". This will either say "Listening" (good) or "Filtered" (bad). Repeat this for: http://www.catglobal.com port 443 esm.catglobal.com port 80 esm.catglobal.com port 443 I can get "Listening" for all of these except the last one, and EdExcel say this is the problem. But NCC say they've already opened it, and if it's not responding properly then it's EdExcel's fault. (I get the same results trying from home.) Who's right? Would love to hear what the results are when the software works.

We've had plenty problems this year. Still can't get the server to connect back to EdExcel since the software and IP changes. After updating the server software, I logged onto each client as Admin, and followed the prompts to upgrade that PC. Are the students trying (and failing) to run the software on the clients before or after they've been updated...?

So...you're double-clicking on a Powerpoint file and it tries to open in Word. First thing I'd check is that it has a .ppt file extension, then open a folder window and look at Tools...Options...Filetypes, scroll down to PPT add choose Advanced...Open...Edit and check the entry for "Application". (Is this happening with multiple files / multiple PCs...?)

Do you mean, searching a bunch of files for the presence or absence of particular NTFS permissions...? This seems quite tricky. The only similar utility I've found so far is part of an expensive package by tools4ever. Interesting post from cheredenine. I'm not into these kinds of systems in a big way, but I've dabbled with Phoenix Gold, SIMS, E1 and currently Serco. (School decided to migrate from E1 to Serco. They hated E1.) Seems OK, though I'm finding the ePortal/XML thing pretty confusing and not very user-friendly...

On page 46 of the manual (see link above) there's an illustration of the network config printout which should include the administrator password (under "Miscellaneous").

Did you try printing out a network config page...?

HP Officejet Pro K850...? Manual here. Can't see a reset, but it talks about changing it using the embedded web server (settings...security). Does that work...? (Could also try printing out a network configuration page, which looks like it includes it - press Cancel while holding down the Power button.)

I've recently come across a couple of open-source apps I'm interested in installing on one of our servers, and they both use MySQL. This isn't likely to break anything is it...? (Looks like the server's already running SQL Server 2005, though this might just be part of Backup Exec.)

I'm not a big Securus fan myself - very cumbersome.

I was just accosted by the Head of Drama who asked me to arrange setting up some kind of video link so that the cast in a school musical can take their cues from a conductor who isn't in direct line of sight of the audience. They were fairly insistent that I was the person to organise this because it was "technical". I suppose I could do something with webcams or whatever. Any hardware/software suggestions for a suitable setup...?

We've got loads of Dell mice with extra buttons on the side which navigate forwards and backwards in Internet Explorer. Unfortunately these wreak havoc in certain online tests - yesterday a class was repeatedly told not to press them, and still twelve of them did. They're stupidly positioned. Anyway, anyone know how to disable them?

...nothing to do with school, but an acquaintance is trying to get his website to display properly in Internet Explorer. (Works OK in Firefox / Safari, but Flash elements aren't showing in IE). Original page was: Welcome to Andrew Simon McAllister - Film Composer I sent him this link warning about direct use of the object tag: Preparing your website to handle the Microsoft changes to Internet Explorer | Adobe Developer Connection ...and he updated the site to this: Welcome to Andrew Simon McAllister - Film Composer ...but it still doesn't work. Any thoughts what the problem might be...?
