UPDATE: I also cannot ping simply 'google.com' Not too sure if this is of any interest? I CAN browse to the site, however...

I cannot manually telnet to either from the Exchange server or from another PC in the network. I can't see it being a firewall issue as I CAN telnet to mail.SCHOOLNAME.COUNTY.sch.uk on port 25?

I'm not blocking, not that I can tell anyway. I can access google from a browser etc. Not on any blacklists either.

Hello, still no luck there with a manual telnet test on those ports!

I decided to start a new thread, rather than carry the other one on as this is a new issue. I cannot send outgoing emails to GMAIL accounts. I can send to other domains, and gmail CAN email into the Exchange server. When running SMTPdiag, the following is shown: Currently sick to the back teeth of Exchange! HELP! :'(

Not too sure about that, something I'll have to look at when I'm back in on Tuesday. Meanwhile, for some reason I'm now being prevented from sending emails... I was able to, and now can't! In the Queue view, I'm receiving a 'LED=441 4.4.1. Error encountered while communicating with primary target IP address: "Failed to connect. Winsock error code: 10060, Win32 error code: 10060." Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed' Strangely, I cannot PING Google.com but I CAN browse to it? Any clues?

I got it sorted fortunately! Turns out it was because I had an alternate DNS server in the IP Settings which was no longer in use. Strange one...! Then after many hours of getting my head around auto discover and SAN CERTS it works! Strangely however, it doesn't work on mobile if I'm connected to the wifi where the exchange server is. I'll check again next week, but I expect it's more DNS/A record problems. First time doing this, if anyone else is following and has any problems, give me a shout. I may have encountered them myself in the past few days!

I'm in the process of configuring an exchange server and I've encountered a problem where it's not accepting emails from external domains. I can email internally and I can email outbound from the OWA, however if I try to email from (say) Gmail, it doesn't appear. It doesn't, however, give me a bounceback error at Gmail. I think I've configured the MX/A records correctly for DNS and my ISP confirmed they can telnet using the appropriate information. Any ideas?

So my current environment for SIMS is broken, according to CAPITA, and patches wont apply etc. (I won't go into detail) so I'm now having to migrate SIMS to a new server. I'm going to upgrade from 08R2 to 2012 in the process, and I just wanted your advice to how much RAM/Drive space I should need? There are approx 300 students and 50 members of staff. On a side note, I think I'll be paying CAPITA for the migration, unless anyone has any tips and can reassure me it's fairly simple? Thanks!

So it's my first time doing the Volume Licensing and clearly EES seems to be the way to do it (that's how the previous NM here has). I'll be working with a different sales company, but I just want to get my head around how it works? In the past, I've had experiences where I log in and I have a key for everything on the VLSC portal. When I'm purchasing now, I know you work out how many full time employees there are etc. but do I have to pay for server licenses individually, or is there a way to just buy 'the complete package' essentially having unlimited of everything (to a reasonable level). Previous workplaces I've logged in and seen X/500 on the Server licenses - but that would equate to an insane amount of money for DataCtr? Anyone able to give me an idea of how it all works, in layman's terms?(!) Thanks in advance

Yes, I would have a fair few servers to virtualise and I agree that the MicroServers wouldn't take the load for everything. I was thinking more, build from scratch with a MicroServer as a test/demo environment. Then when SLT etc. can see that it's all good and works I can migrate it across to a bigger host with 100+GB of RAM.

The 'biggy'... I've started into a new school as NM and the servers are all over the place, no virtualisation, half of them running Server 2003 and not configured properly. How would you go about starting again and implementing virtual machines. Obviously I'll need to preserve user data but would it be something I'd have to do over the summer period (this would be next year) or should I slowly migrate over the year? With virtual hosts being the price they are, I was considering starting off with a MicroServer with ESXi and then moving that to a bigger ProLiant or something later on, but that seems like twice the work? Help... PS - single staffed here......

I've joined a school as NM and I'm currently on a crossover week with their current NM. How would you go about ensuring you've changed every password possible? I'd also like to change all of the WiFi passwords - I guess the best way to do this is to deploy a batch script with the exported NEW network settings to each machine, before changing? All advice is welcome!

Ah - can't be of use there then. Well you probably want a horn PA system. If you're not going to use it for music or anything like that. Plus, will be cheaper. And I'd opt for a wireless SM58 for one of the best input qualities - but it's all down to money of course!

Not a problem! Just remember to lock down the OU's you're allowing the staff member to change. Otherwise, if they can reset other staff passwords it can cause a lot of bother... Remember to thank if it was useful! :-)

For a web based it's a bit more tricky. Plus it's a bit riskier if it's not locked down. But I've found a couple of options? Depends what exactly it is you're wanting. Are you wanting a PA System for music etc. or are you wanting horns for the sake of voices? If you were based near myself, I could recommend a good company who I actually work for part-time.

Does it NEED to be web based? If it's for staff, could you not just deploy an .exe to their desktops?

I've always used Premiere/AE for editing. If you're wanting to create a photo slideshow, try (old but good) Microsoft PhotoStory? Download Microsoft Photo Story 3 for Windows XP from Official Microsoft Download Center Old-school XP program, but still good!
