Where are you having the background pulled from? I mean we have it stored locally (a batch script checks on the server to see if it has been updated and copies over the new one if its date created has changed) Although we have had it before where the local copy if the file was too big would corrupt so we made sure its a nice file size then it was fine.

If your happy using .iso files and simply burning them i'm more than happy to put a .iso file on a ftp server temp for you.

Well what you can do is install the server adminpac on there laptop, and just delegate them control over Active directory to the student area, Haven't done it for awhile personally so can't remember exactly what needs clicking etc, I'll post back more details once i'm in the office tomorrow and have it infront of me, As we have it where we are that staff can only reset student passwords for obvious reasons. Ye we had a similar issue with this at one point, Check out this link (i think its the same link we used to sort it, let me know if it works if not i'll forward the gpo we are using at work) : Redirecting IE Favorites via GPO - Windowmaker's blog It lets you move the IE7 shortcuts to a different folder we simply have it redirect to there N drive which is where there documents are stored. Hmmm so is it just on some databases or is it on all databases didn't realise some could turn off the menu, have you opened the database on a different machine etc? only ran into it being disabled by user error before and we just cleared the profile all sorted.

Well if you are looking to go to Scribus, if the machine already has publisher installer there is, Import Publisher to Scribus - Scribus Public Wiki Although personally we just put all the publisher files as pdf's that way they could easily be viewed although not edited but we did this during the summer holidays so very few people actually had to go back and be able to edit publisher files.

Ye we had this problem when we where trying to convert to open office, But we didn't come up with anything just told them how to convert them to open scribus but it doesn't handle .pub files its self... Sorry

Well in the answer to number 2, We had this problem at first we thought this was down to sophos but after removing it on a few machines the problem continued, but after really running out of options we resorted to doing a full bios update on all the machines and this stopped them hanging when logging on, no idea why it was causing it but its something to try. And well number 3, we had this a few times clearing that persons profile seemed to clear up the problem although now we have acually moved over to open office and dont have any of these problems.

If its just your new machine thats doing this and the others are fine... Sounds like the new pc hasn't been moved into the correct area of the AD, bset bet is jump onto your AD on your server or if you have it locally setup use that, and move that machine into the correct area of the network, it will default be in a group called Computers (I think?)

Ye i read about the fact thats possible although unfortunately we don't have the money for an exchange server and licensing at this moment in time so I'm looking for more towards open source free solutions, as I don't mind putting in the extra work.

In answer to your question is generally you put it on your IIS but i wouldn't set it as a DMZ, As this is considered insecure really unless that server is fully secured, I'd recommend simply forwarding the required ports should be port 80 (http) and port 443(https) <-- Think that's right? Also you can't have 2 DMZ's Depending on what solution you use hopefully you just setup the port forwards to the IIS server and that then redirects to the network drives etc.(so IIS doesn't doesn't need to be on the file server)

Your the lucky one then I've found quiet a few older pcs that if you install SP3 it just going into a constant bsod, although i know which pcs to avoid putting it on here, Otherwise its normally fine.

Also another suggestion, Turn off the switches, just because there is always someone who either doesn't get the message about all the pcs need to be off etc because of the virus, that or someone always turns them back on thinking off i thought it just this one wouldn't make a difference. Strangely enough i ran into the same problem around 3 months ago really threw me of but sorted it with a replacement power supply. But ye "Problem 2:" try just getting an extension lead and putting them into another mains ring, although also try changing your input cables I've seen interference been picked up by really cheap cables.

Now this is something we are currently looking into setting up at where i work as well, and its something we are kinda keeping to are selfs because we dont want allot of pressure to get it setup within like a week or something silly but its something personally i think is really needed, Now i started writing a script that would automacically do all the IIS with the user accounts bit but kinda put that on hold as my NM stated that it can be done with share point does anyone know anything about share point can they confirm this? I completely agree re imaging is easily the fastest and most efficient way if you have that available to you although from the nature of the first question one would guess it isn't?(Some people aren't lucky enough to have things like norton ghost on RIS) and as already stated if there is important files they should be backed up depending what you have available to you depends how you do this.

We had a similar problem when i was relatively new to the education environment, and well the usb sticks was the hardest part to stop, so we simply stoped auto-run on everything and also put in software restrictions to stop the virus being run, also good idea for future is to always make sure you have decent permissions set on each share area like within are environment we have a common area which only admins can write directly into the path which stops spreading from other accounts.

Also chkdsk /r can normally sort it if u run it under the recovery console if you boot from the xp disc

Ok this may seem really stupid... but i know Microsoft had on there site server 2008 trial as i ran it for abit although looking to test it out alittle more as i didn't get enough time to play with it as i'd like, But looking about the Microsoft site i just seem to hit dead links etc... Am i right in thinking they have removed the 2008 server trial? If not any chance someone can provide me a link? Thanks to any help! Azz

Ye we mainly had them coming in from excel, and well in all honestly not sure on that one I don't think so, but then blocking all activex here didn't cause any problems at all not totally sure why the kids would need it anyway, from what im mainly aware of activex is mainly used for flash.... " - I dont think thats possible at all would be good thought although we have moved to open office here so havn't looked into the lastest office GPO templates.

Which version of office are you running? if your running 2003 or + you can block all ActiveX that stops it, that or if your still looking into upgrading have you considered going to open office instead, We where running 2000 and couldn't block it, And we just couldn't afford upgrades so we are now using open office on student machines. @rasssp - Ye we run Abtutor its great and all but i prefer to have everything set threw GPO, And i think i'm almost there blocking most ways i'll provide more info later. @NikChillin - Ye we have got to that point now, i have just managed to block all flash from being dragged into IE that doesn't affect websites although still in the testing stage but i'm starting to draw the line because of the amount of time all this security takes to setup.

Sorry to bump an old forum post... But FN-GM any chance you still have that script its exactly what i need for something as one IT room keeps getting left unlocked at lunch and miss used by students.
