Actually totally agree with 'Mr. Ben' on that one... I think the main thing that takes up my time is projectors normally down to staff not being able to read instructions Although i have no idea where that would take are ratio most likely to the 300 mark as we have like entire site covered by wireless etc

We are on just over the 210:1 mark, Think its about 1,300 users. Although thats not including 2 other sites we do IT support for but thats a if/when needed. But seems to be fine normally, good work load really and myself and the NM are both full time.

Generally keep any half decent old servers about with a copy of windows server on... Just incase one server happens to randomly clunk out... can easily throw that back in restore from backups while we sort out what happened to the one thats clunked out and then get that sorted and put it back in at a weekend or something.

how about windows file quota will just show you which users are using allot of space and then can just check there files

Just incase anyone is interested on how we have deployed it without using the ADM files, below is the batch script I threw together.

Yep deployed using a batch script that checks if its installed on pc bootup, if its not installed it installs itself, Although basically as we havn't put the money out for the ADM's we have very little control over it really. Well in all honestly i don't use publisher very often at all only when a member of staff or student has a problem but i mean i've never really liked the program, and well its the same with Scribus really, although we havn't had any complaints about it in all honest so it can't be too bad, although the only problem we do have is it doesn't open publisher files (Ye that was interesting although) there is a guide to kinda convert them... Which we sent to all staff, Although we did the change over in the summer hols so most people didn't notice

Ye we had a similar problem when students clicked save as it look them back to the old server, which is why we ended up having to clear everyone's profile, and make sure all the paths in the GPO pointed everyone to the new location and that all students mapped to the new server.

Also quick side note i forgot to mention.. we also deployed(with batch script) out Scribus to replace publisher

We are currently using Open office on around 400 machines, although we still use office for all the staff machines because of sims.... Somethings you can't avoid i guess unless they do or have changed it to be compatibile although i'm not sure myself as i dont really touch sims just make sure they can logon thats as far as i go with it. Although the problems we have got so far was with the database side of things i can remember a teacher complaining they needed access because of the database on open office doesn't do validation or some part of validation that the coursework required. Other than that not really too many problems a few ones where people couldn't find thing and that... and u still get some people saying its rubbish but then you get some who love it but its just reistance to change really. Although on the note of ADM's we arn't actually using the Open office ones, as there wasn't really anything we felt the need to control apart from we have all users auto save as .doc etc so that its auto saved as basically the normal office equililent so students sending it home dont have any issues. but todo this we have an its an extention that i make auto install with the office which was all done over batch script which i just put in the startup script of all the machines so deployed open office without moving If you want when i'm in work tomorrow can post the script/files i used.

Cheers for that post russdev, i've always simply used the >C:\abc.txt at the end... Hence why if u ever see my c drive there is allot of random txt files there

Make sure your logon script that is managing your network drives is deleting the old ones first so if you have an O:\ drive mapped to something u want to put in "NET USE O: /DELETE" Before actually having the new one map. Also might be worth blanking the profiles?

Check this script if you do a search on the forums you will find plenty , Although personally i've always used excel and batch scripts to do this. this is plenty of chat about it on forums though Reset the file permissions on homedrives

We currently use ABTutor, it can log all activity if you set a policy todo so, and also allows you to easy see the screens. We currently have each room with a different password which is easy todo we deployed it all out threw GPO, and that way each teacher machine can control the room and only that room, when we can see any machines that we want as we have them in groups on are machine with the passwords saved.

Yep Same as on that windows plain all the way, allows everything we need with 'easy' administration

open up notepad and just copy and paste in xcopy \\win2k3data\logon\wallpaper.jpg c:\windows\web\wallpaper\ /y/d/s/e/r/c/h/k/v Then make the required change (changing the server address and places ), and save the file as something like "wallpaper.bat" (It must have a .bat extension) and save it in somewhere that system has full access to. then all you have to-do is add it as a script where you have added it you don't need to add any script parameters.

Ye we had some really really weird corrupting profile problems at one point and just couldn't figure it out, although we installed the hive cleanup program (we deployed it as an MSI threw GPO so no need to do any real work as such) and seemed to sort that out not had any problems since then really.

Ye what you want to-do is go under the gpo and put a startup script for the local machine, below is a sample for what we use, just put it in notepad and save it as a .bat extension xcopy \\win2k3data\logon\wallpaper.jpg c:\windows\web\wallpaper\ /y/d/s/e/r/c/h/k/v This just copies the file over if it has been created more recently that the one that is currently in C:\windows\web\wallpaper\ . You can also do the registry change by script if you want.

Ye ditto again for ABTutor , We use ISA server are self so that we can manage all the connections and filtering in and out although for flexibility and ease of use that the teachers can use we have a control licence of ABTutor for each room which allows there teacher to either select all the room or per pupil of no internet or only allow certain sites or certain programs etc... (Also a nice feature with ABTutor we have the clients install by MSI threw the GPO so no need to manual install)

Afternoon guys, OK ran into a problem here this morning that caught me of guard, some students documents needed moving over to a different folder, when I went into his documents i saw that the document was in green text (quick google showed this is because the student had encrypted the folder from right click -->properties--> advanced -->Encrpyt contents), Now I've had a google about and I can't seem to find anything useful although not sure if im looking in the right place, anyone know of a GPO, or a file permission that I can set on there home directory that will stop the students being able to change any of the attributes although mainly after restricting advanced attributes.

We had a wierd problem like this awhile ago think it got fixed in a windows update tho, as the usb sticks would only appear if you put the stick in before the student logged on if the pc had a cd drive (random i know) Also another great one is windows sometimes will set the usb stick to the same letter as a network drive if your using network drive mapping.

I usually expect a bulb to last for 2000 hours then i like to have a space on order if its an important projector although known some do over 3000 i think it was.

Same as FN-GM,also is it just pen drives your using? aka if u plug a mouse in are you getting power etc for it, if its just pen drives check under disc manager check its getting a drive letter etc.

Tried checking the folder threw command prompt? explorer can totally freak out if the file path is too long, to the point it can't see it but you can normally see it threw cmd if I remember right. From what i remember right one way to delete the file also was to map a drive to the folder... So tools -> map network drive -->put the folder as \\cayars002\MandatoryProfiles$\students\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ADGYNX91\
