  1. Hi, spec`ing up a new server and would like peoples opinion on suitability, this will be a virtual Host and have VM`s for DirSync (for Office 365), another VM as a file server and another to replace a DHCP server PowerEdge R730, Intel® Xeon® E5-2650 v3 2.3GHz,25M Cache,9.60GT/s QPI,Turbo,HT,10C/20T 2 CPU Standard 2 x 16GB RDIMM, 2133MT/s, Dual Rank, x4 Data Width RAID 10 for H330/H730/H730P PERC H730 RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 4 x 1TB 7.2K RPM Near-Line SAS 6Gbps 2.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive Dual, Hot-plug, Redundant Power Supply (1+1), 750W Does this look ok? Would RAID 5 or 10 be best for this?, Im thinking of maybe RAID 5 with Hot spare Any advice would be great. Regards
  2. Really helpful, a lot of helpful tweaks in there for us to move forward thanks
  3. How does everyone manage controlled assessment accounts for pupils?, currently we have had to setup 250 separate accounts for users to log on with (instead of their current account) with limited privileges to network shares etc..., is there a better way of doing this?, it just seems time very consuming to have to do it this way! Regards
  4. Wondering if anyone can advise me the best way to manage out mobile devices, Im wanting the best way is to send a SSL Certificate to our devices , we need to install this for users to be able to access secure pages on their devices. Lately I have been using Apple configurator, attaching the devices to my PC and installing the certificate that way but this is not suitable for BYOD or Guest devices. I have been looking at Meraki MDM ( I think we will use this for devices in school) and it looks great but can you deploy certificates to devices through this? Cheers in advance
  5. Yeah we have PARS, can you do this in it? (Just asking before I look myself) Thanks
  6. Had a disk fail in our SIMS server the other day (Fixed now) and got me thinking what if the SIMS server (God forbid!) went offline (Hardware\Software Fail) for a day(s) what plan the school has for doing registers whilst we fix it. So I asked the Attendance officer what procedure they have..and they have none!. Has anyone got a good procedure for this?, I`m thinking we could schedule a download of the registers every Friday to another server\laptop so we can print out the registers in the event of this. I'm not sure if this can be done? any advice would be grateful Thanks
  7. Thanks for the reply, I can see there will be some uproar, we need to upgrade our ageing server that its hosted on now so I thought we might as well make the move instead of staying with what we have. It looks like it offers a lot of great benefits but I don't doubt for a minute I will get a bit of stick. Were currently upgrading our Office package from 10 to 13 and were already getting hassle about users "not liking it" and "cant use it" Please keep the advice coming! Thanks
  8. Hi, Were in the early stages of planning for an upgrade from an on-Premises exchange to Office 365 and I'm wondering how the Teachers and students have taken the transition?, Is there anything they found difficult to understand? Any feedback on the transition in general would be grateful. Thinking of moving over in the Summer. Thanks
  9. Currently have 1 DHCP server, just wondering how many people have?, just thinking redundancy if that server were to go offline. Cheers
  10. Would 120gb SSD be too small you think?
  11. thanks for the reply's, I have asked for a quote with SSD`s - would you say 4gb is ok (with SSD`s) ?? for the RAM Also, 250gb SSD size should be ok shouldn't it?
  12. Hi, does anyone have these and could provide feedback on how they are?, were looking to purchase a large amount of PC`s and these are one of the options Any feedback will be grateful Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge E73 SFF Intel Core i5-4430s 4GB 500GB Windows 7 Professional ThinkCentre E73 Small Form Factor | Small Business Class Desktop Â| Lenovo UK Regards
  13. thanks for that, I thought that it was a workstation one. So just to confirm, even if you don't install the software on the server it still should go on to battery in the event of a power fail? Its looking like the UPS is failed. Thanks
  14. Had a quick Power cut yesterday and a few of the servers didn't kick on to the UPS - Turns out they weren't configured properly. The UPS`s are physically connected to the servers, but when I go into power options in Control panel it doesn't give any indication of noticing the battery, do you have to install the UPS software for it to work effectively? Also, I'm not sure the ups that we have is compatible with W2K8 r2? (APC Back UPS 1200) as it comes with the APC personal edition and it says its compatible with Windows 7,8,Home server. (no mention of server) Even when I connect the data cable (rj45 to usb) to the server it doesn't even pick it up. Regards
  15. thanks for the advice and help - I have unchecked the Admin card from DNS manager - I will see how it goes today Thanks
  16. no, the admin domain has its own DC with dns installed etc.. and the DNS is managed by that server. Theres just an entry in the curric DNS for the admin server so they can access the shares on the curric. The two dual nic servers are on the curric domain. Im thinking I could just set the DNS to listen only on the curric card?
  17. Im probably best setting within DNS manager to only listen on the Curric interface?
  18. Yes both domains use different subnets They are all DC`s as well as DNS servers
  19. Hi, thanks for the reply. It was a setup I have inherited, we have both a Curriculum and admin domain, the servers are all on the Curriculum domain but have shares that the admin domain users want\need to access. The cards on the servers are setup with the Curriculum gateway inputted on the curric card and only the IP + subnet and DNS settings inputted on the admin card (I have taken out the admin gateway entry)
  20. Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help with this strange issue I have with 2 of our 3 DNS servers. Setup DNS 1 - Win 2k12 - 1 network card DNS 2 - Win 2k8 - 2 network cards (Admin and Curric card) DNS 3 - Win 2k8 - 2 network cards (Admin and Curric card) I'm having (Intermittent) issues with pinging the 2 DNS servers by NetBIOS name from various PC`s I will ping (NetBIOS name) either of the DNS servers (with 2 network cards) and it will reply only for an hour later (or less) to not reply and tries to resolve to the admin card. An hour later it will reply to the curric card no problem. The DNS servers configured on the workstation (auto ip settings) and DNS settings are to resolve to DNS 2 and DNS 3 In the DNS console (replicated between the 3 servers) are entries (static) for all DNS servers (including the admin card) - so its got a record in DNS? When it wont resolve from NetBIOS name it will (always) resolve using the IP I have looked in the Event view>Administrator events and also System and cant find anything (loss of connection etc..) Any help would be very grateful!
  21. We have setup a few colour printers only to print in Mono, which works fine but the pupils can get to the Printer properties (when going to print) and changing the print to colour - This doesn't effect the server side and when they log off it defaults back to Mono but the teachers don't want them to print colour at all. Their permissions on the printer are set to "Print" only and when they select Printer properties the drivers\ports tab are disabled but still the (HP) option for colour settings is their? I cant find anything in GP and a quick check on the net doesn't seem to bring anything up. Regards
  22. we have it here, don't know how much it cost (or costing) and we weren't involved in the decision, they only involve us when they cant do something. It seems another waste of money when they could have done the same thing with what we have currently. but that's standard really
  23. I'm trying to get to the bottom of our (slight ) problem with logon times and whilst checking our clients preferred DNS settings neither is configured (through DHCP) to point to our PDC (windows 2012) but instead is set to our other domain controllers (server 2008 r2) I was wondering what should I have my clients DNS settings pointing back to? Should it be the PDC as preferred DNS and either one of the 2008 boxes as secondary? Cheers
  24. Hi, wondering if it would be possible for someone to share their Staff and Student AUP`s - Ours is years out of date thanks
  25. thanks, does anyone have a preferred place to purchase SAS disks? thanks
