The rule of thumb is as follows; if it's Procurve, it will need genuine HP. If it was born from comware (a 3COM legacy derivative) it will take just about anything.

I believe the Meru model is protected by patent and cannot be copied. The Extricom single channel or 'Blanket' model requires each AP to be wired back to an Extricom controller rather than any switch on the network.

Both work well when deployed in the right way in the right environment. Sometimes multi cell os a better choice, other times single cell is better. Many factors need to be considered some of which are; Throughput requirement Concurrent connectivity 802.11ac viewpoint Building(s) layout and construction Legacy experience (people often choose one or the other because it's all they've ever know) A pre-sales discussion to understand the differences and the choices is as important as the pre-installation RF survey. I would definitely look at a solution which offered some sort of segregation such as a Bonjour gateway where multicast traffic is converted to unicast based on a set of policies. This will restrict the number of devices advertising within certain areas.

I would echo my comment re the 5406 and its blocking. It will only handle 2 x 10G links at full speed per slot. Why not virtualise with a suite of 5800s creating an IRF. The 5406 has now been replaced with the 5406R which whilst increasing the backplane speed is still blocking at 2:1. No word yet of v3 modules but v1 modules definitely not supported whereas v2 will be.

Not really enterprise grade only offering 300Mbps. This will likely grind to a halt with more than 10 concurrent connections. Routers in each classroom? Can you expand i.e make and model,what sort of routing you're doing.

Although the stretch layer 2 method is simple and easy to implement, it would be a step backwards if you have many users connected to each of your spokes.Traffic flow will be controlled more effectively if you use layer 3 routed links with routes to each destination.

Why would you want to increase the traffic into your 'core' location? If individual schools do their own routing then only traffic destined for other schools needs to cross those boundaries. We now have schools in the UK who are not only routing within individual schools but some are routing in their own edge cabs. Whilst it may be overkill for some establishments to go this far it is highly efficient and most importantly, robust.

I am suggesting that the number of 2.4 clients will probably fall off as the number of AC clients rise. If that is the case then the need for a 2.4 radio will be diminished.

Also worth a thought is what happens to your dual radio AC AP (2.4GHz & 5GHz) when the 2.4 clients start to, and completely disappear. I am told that some vendors' APs will operate 5 on both but some will effectively have a redundant radio.

Problems with DIY solutions such as WAP on a stick and Android app is that you won't get heat maps showing any or most of the following which you would get with Ekahau or similar; Minimum Signal Strength Minimum SNR Minimum Data Rate Number of Access points 'seen' Max Ping round trip Max Packet loss But as always budgets dictate.

You can connect as many 10G connections as your modules will take but if more than two get max'd out then blocking will occur.

This is a small extract from a tech paper on the 5400/8200 chassis. For wire-rate connectivity, do not connect more than two 10-GbE ports to a channel . In Figure 24, it is possibleto connect ports 1–4 for wire-rate connectivity because the first channel will have ports 1 and 4 connected,while the second channel will use ports 2 and 3 . If ports 1, 4, and 6 are connected, but other ports areunused, the three ports will share up to 23 .4 Gbps of bandwidth . If ports 1, 4, 6, and 8 are connected, theports will share 23 .4 Gbps of bandwidth between the four ports . The E8200 zl series can support up to fourwire-rate interfaces on an 8-port 10 GbE module (J9538A) . The 10 GbE module (J9538A) delivers additional performance for E5400 zl Switches . Cost depends on the size of the campus and the complexity. A company will usually quote based on a set of building plans and discussions Some companies might refund the cost against an order for a new wifi system. A proper survey is done using an AP of choice with Ekahau (or similar) software installed which costs an arm and a leg hence the charge for the survey. The survey company will also typically use an RF spectrum analyser to check for interferers such as Radar, PIR detectors, etc etc. Hope this helps
