I used to hate Exchange, but since 2003, it's a doddle to install, backup and restore. For small sites it can happily coexist on existing servers provided sufficient resources. I've got it running (albeit temporarily), on a virtual 2K3 server hosted on a Core 2 Duo PC at a large primary school with no problems. At sites that don't want to run Exchange, I'm considering the Outlook PST Backup Plugin. With the possibility of a Rsync or Robocopy based startup script to mirror all .PST files up to a location on a server. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to install Exchange, besides it's industry standard and would be perfect for my personal professional development. Like I said, it's my Anti-Microsoft Boss. So, it looks like we have to make do in other ways. If I was in charge, I'd go for Exchange straight away.

Yes I am, just because it is not supported, that doesn't mean it can't be done. Also, my boss refuses to buy Exchange, so I have to find a work around and this is it.

Right I finally got this working. If anyone else is interested. It goes something like this. I created a new domain account with admin privaleges called "EmailTest" and assigned it a roaming profile. I logged in, changed the desktop to how I wanted it and then started Outlook. I set it up without email support so that it would create the PST file. It created it in "C:\Documents and Settings\EmailTest\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook" I moved the PST out of that folder and into a temp folder. (Move the file do not leave a copy in the folder) I then mapped a drive (H:) to a temp share on the server. Created a folder called Outlook and put the PST in there. When I started up Outlook, it complained that the PST can't be found. So, I pointed it to the new location (H:\Outlook\Outlook.pst) Then closed Outlook, removed the drive mapping and restarted Outlook. Again it complained that the PST couldn't be found, but it was looking in the new location of H:\Outlook\ The reason I used H: is because we map a drive to the users My Documents folder called H: Log off, rename the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man and there you have it. Anytime a new user will log in with the new profile Outlook will automatically look in H:\Outlook\ for the PST file. All you have to do is create a folder called Outlook in the users My Document and put the base PST that you copied orginally into that folder.

I've finally managed to get Outlooks to remember it's settings on my machine even though I am using mandatory profiles. All I did was simply to redirect the Application Data folder in Group Policy to my home folder on the server. However, albeit it is remembering my settings on my computer in my office. If I log in anywhere else, I don't get my outlook. Is there anything that I can do to get it to work regardless of where I log in?

I don't want the anti-virus part. Does it allow me to deactivate the anti-virus and never bug me to turn it on again?

We're looking to upgrade our in house Internet Content Filtering and Management System. At the moment we use Igear for MS Proxy 2.0. Both of which are out of date and no longer supported. Both of which were on the system before I started. In theory Igear for MS Proxy is still supported and we renew licences every year. However, their content filtering seems to be totally useless. It is updated everyday, yet it seems like no sites are actually being added to the library. It was brought out by Symantec a few years ago and hardly anyone at Symantec knows what it is. Igear has since been replaced by Symantec Web Security, which requires ISA Sever. This is 1 option that we have, is to upgrade to SWS and ISA Server, but I'd rather not to because Symantec support is just plain crap. 2nd option is to look elsewhere. We currently use Igear, for 2 purposes, In house Internet Filtering and also Controlling User Access to the Internet. No user (or machine) can access the Internet until we have added them (and granted access) into Igear. (Users are granted access after they have signed the School Internet AUP) Igear is our in house proxy and all machines go through Igear as their proxy and Igear goes out through the ISP's proxy. It is possible to go directly through the ISP's proxy and bypass Igear altogether. Although the students don't know and can't do that anyway. Igear allows us to put temporary bans on students if we need to and also allows us to create custom filter dictionaries that we have full control over. So basically we need an in house filter system that can also give us the user management we need. Anyone know of any alternatives?

Yeah, I was around 5 - 10 years old when I remember watching this, which is why it amazes me now as to how damn hard it was.

I was flicking through the channels on cable yesterday and came across Ftn who were showing repeats of The Krypton Factor. I got all nostalgic and sat down to watch it. After the show had ended I was amazed at just how hard some of the challenges were and the first thing to come to my mind was how gameshows nowadays just don't come anywhere near the quality and difficulty that this show was, and some of those contestants were bloody cleaver! I was trying to think what comes close in modern times, but hardly anything mixes knowledge with physical ability like The Krypton Factor did. Gordon Burns is presenting BBC News North West these days, sporting a lot more wrinkles on his face Ah the good old days!

Heh! We have about 90-95% of our kids on Free Meals! Pretty much all the rest pay, with hardly any packed lunches... I guess if you claim free you just get poor quality, regardless all the staff pay!

I personally can't see the food ever being done in house here. I think the current catering staff are too damn lazy to start off with! They seem perfectly happy with the processed junk. It's also a pain that even though we're based in East London, we're about 15 minutes away from any sort of "decent" food places. (With an official 30 min lunch, its not feasible) Albeit there are a couple of shoddy looking cafes. However, my religious requirements pretty much rule that out... I once tried going to the local Tesco for a week before work, but at that time, they haven't stocked any of the sandwiches or pasta salad's yet! Packed Lunches it is then!

Our school has decided to get rid of Chips from it's school dinner menu, so that it can start to move towards healthier meals. Now, that is all good, and I'm not particularly fussed because frankly the chips in my school were poor, soggy and not worth the potatoes they were made out of. It's all good telling the kids and their parents that they are trying to be healthier, but, when you look at what chips have been replaced with (see below), you begin to wonder what exactly constitutes chips... Whats even funnier is that when you buy something, the caters actually ask, "Would you like chips with that?" I'm actually beginning to think there is a problem relating to DNS. Reason is, I tried adding another computer to the domain using it's full DNS name of "newdomain.local" however, it refused to find a DC for the domain, I then tried the netbios name of "newdomain" and it worked. So, DNS issue? Or something else?

So, our admin server went kaboom! We had already brought a new server to replace what was the old Dell running NT4. However, the weeks and months of planning the migration has turned into minutes and hours. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the old server was in a pretty bad state, permissions were terrible, users saved their files anywhere, and it took 15 minutes for anyone to log on! So, I've started from scratch. New server, new domain, Windows Server 2003, Active Directory infrastructure. Anyway, I have set it's role as Domain Controller, File Server, DNS Server. I have setup Active Directory, and created an OU for Staff. I have created 1 user and a mandatory profile and created a group policy called StaffGPO. I did this all in GPMC, so it is linked to the Staff OU. The StaffGPO is so far supposed to: Redirect My Documents to \\server\mydocs\staff\%username% Run a "MapDrive.bat" batch file to map H: to the above location, and a few other drives to other shared locations. Set some policies to restrict access to Control Panel, Run Command and some IE policies (proxy settings, homepage etc) Now, the problem, the group policy is not running! I log in as our sole user and none of the policies are applied. None! The profile is applied fine. Just no policies. I remember setting up a test network at home and having the same problem but never managing to get it working. So, my question is, how can I get the accounts to run the policy when I log in?

I've just tried to follow this guide using the latest version 3.0.93 and when I try to edit the MSI in Orca, I can't see any of the properties listed above in the properties table. Am I doing something wrong?
