Stardock have just released Start8 for Windows 8. Source - Neowin.net I've just installed it on to my home PC running Windows 8 and it runs very nicely. It's still in beta, so I'm hoping the finished product includes further customisation like the ability to not highlight newly installed programs and customise the number of items in the Start Menu, but so far, it's looking very promising indeed!

Yeah, the VM is an option, but I was hoping to install it using Boot Camp and then using Fusion to create the VM from the Boot Camp partition. Therefore saving me the need to have to reconfigure Windows 8 twice. I agree with the messing with EFI part. Don't really like the look of that. Might just wait for official support from Apple. Any ideas on how to get the option back to create a USB install disk?

I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.1) on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and I'm trying to install Windows 8 using Boot Camp. I downloaded the Windows 8 RTM from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Portal. I used Boot Camp for the first time and it gave the option to "Create a Windows 7 USB Disk" which I did using the Windows 8 ISO. I couldn't install Boot Camp at the time, so I decided I'd do it later. I've just re-run the Boot Camp Assistant and I've noticed the "Create a Windows 7 USB Disk" isn't there anymore, and also, when it comes to creating the partition, I get the following error: The installer disc could not be found. Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized. 2 questions: 1) How do I get the option to create a Windows USB Disk again? 2) How can I get the Boot Camp Assistant to recognise the USB I already have?

I've been following VM's offers for a while & the broadband & phone offers are pretty stagnant. I'm not looking for a TV package as we don't really watch much TV & I can't really afford the premium packages. Thanks for the info anyway!

Well, looks like I'm on my way to Virgin Media. I'll be giving BE retentions a call tomorrow, but I honestly think I'll be cancelling as I'd rather pay for better speeds than pay less for lower speeds. Thanks for all the help guys. Does anyone have any recommendations for a router if the Super Hub does give me issues?

The Sky offer does look reasonably good. They're offering me Sky Fibre Unlimited (+ Phone) for £32.25/Month (£20 Internet + £12.25 Phone, although the Internet is increasing to £21.50/Month from September). The only thing is they are only offering "up to 40Mbps". So, the VM offer looks a lot better at 60Mbps, even with the 50% throttling at 30Mbps if I go over the limits. I'm not an O2 customer so I won't qualify for these offers and we'll I'ds rather pay the little extra and get the much better speeds. I'm also disappointed that O2/BE don't have any plans for fibre broadband in the foreseeable future. I looked at the BT Infinity offers, but it was far too expensive for me at £26/Month Internet + £14.60/Month Phone, totalling £40.60/Month. The common consensus seems to be to run the Super Hub in Modem Only Mode with my own router. Any recommendations as to which router I should go for?

I'm currently with BE Broadband for my Internet connection. I pay £18.26/Month for on average 10Mbps (on a good day!). In addition to this, I pay £14.60/Month to BT for standard line rental. I make no calls whatsoever using my home phone and merely use it for receiving calls and the Internet connection. So, currently in total, I pay £32.86/Month for Phone and Internet. I've been looking at alternatives, namely Virgin Media, who are much more competitve. Virgin Media are currently offering: 60Mbps (£18.50/Month) + Telephone Line (£13.90/Month) = £32.40/Month (Discounted @ £23.15/Month for the first 6 months) and also, I get £57.57 if I order through Top Cashback. Seems like a no brainer, however, there are a few things that have stopped me from switching so far: Traffic Management/Shaping: Just how bad is it? I do occasionally download the odd heafty packages, ISO, movies, iTunes stuff, BBC iPlayer (HD), 4oD, Steam etc etc. sometimes all in 1 go. I've read that VM do at times throttle you down to 75% of the speed. However, right now I'm only getting nearly 10Mbps anyway, so I'm thinking it won't be all that bad if they throttle me down to 75% now and then, which is 15Mbps. Virgin Media Super Hub: Or as it's been called, the SuperDud or PooperHub. Is it as bad as everyone makes out? Just what is wrong with it? Currently I'm using BE's Thompson TG587n v2, which isn't anything special itself. Customer Service: Albeit based in Bulgaria, BE's support has been pretty brilliant everytime I have had to call and I've had no major issue. I used to be a VM customer at a previous address and I've dealt with my fellow Indian compatriots and at times, it has been rather annoying! However, whenever there has been a physical problem, VM have no issues sending out an engineer, whereas if I have a problem with BE, they usually say it's a BT issue that they need to fix and getting an engineer out with BT is next to impossible at times! So, the question is, should I make the switch and get better value, or should I stick to the peace of mind of BE (~80% of the time) but not as good value.

Also annoying that there doesn't seem to be anyway to edit the pane sizes. It would be nice if the main email body pane had word wrap to avoid having to scroll across to read an email.

Haven't had the chance to test SMBUp yet but the 10.8.1 update still won't allow me to browse to $ shares. Instead of now trying to look for the share it just says "You do not have permission" immediately. Perhaps a mod could move this to the Mac section as I think its a Mountain Lion issue instead of a Windows 8 issue.

I've also just read that iAntivirus doesn't have real time protection. So, I guess that puts it near the bottom of the pile. I've had bad experiences with Sophos too, albeit on the PC, but enough not to make me go that route again.

I've been looking for Anti Virus solutions for the Mac for a while. I've used ClamXav in the past and was thinking of opening a Barclays Bank Account to get a free copy of Kaspersky for Mac. However, I've noticed that iAntivirus is number 1 on the Mac App Store at the moment. Now, for me Norton Anti Virus and most Symantec products (considering the experiences I've had with Backup Exec, Symantec Web Security, iGear, Corporate Anti Virus etc) will always hold terrible memories of grinding PCs to a halt, having to go through 100s of settings to enable the Internet connection because the default setting was to block the Internet etc. However, I've read reports in recent times that show that Symantec have changed their ways when it comes to Norton and that it is actually pretty resource friendly and doesn't commandeer your PC/Mac to it's liking. So, has anyone had any experiences with iAntivirus for the Mac? What do you think?

lol! I hope it actually fixes just more than connecting to SMB servers with long names, because my SMB server was literally "smb://Home/Files" unless Apple consider that long!

After my mini fail of not knowing that ISO support is now built in to Windows 8, what other nifty new features of Windows 8 have been drowned out by the Metro Modern UI debate?

Really? How can I access it? EDIT: Right Click ISO > Mount! lol! That was easy, I didn't even think to check!

No matter what I do, I can't get the free version of Alcohol 52% or the latest trial of 120% working on Windows 8. Can anyone recommend a simple Virtual Drive app that will allow mounting of ISOs. Don't need anything fancy. Just simple mounting. Thanks.

I've managed to do a work around by creating an actual share to the folder I want and using (smb://HOMEPC/Folder) but I want to access the whole drive using the builtin $ share, (C$, D$ etc) which doesn't work. I'll stick to the workaround for the time being and will wait to see if 10.8.1 fixes this. Not all bad I guess, just annoying!

With Windows 7/Vista/XP, I simply used to hit CMD+K, type "smb://HOMEPC/C$" enter the credentials and away it went. I can't do that any more on Windows 8. Tried disabling firewall and everything, but no luck at all. Any ideas how I can achieve this again?

We're due for our full migration from Vanilla XP/2003 to CC4 next September when the full managed service starts and I can see us still going with Windows 7. I will be very surprised if they choose to roll out Windows 8 though!

And so begins the invasion of Metro in to our lives... Still think this is gonna go down in the corporate/education sector like a ton of bricks!

Hmm it seems like Workstation 8 was only released a short while back. Not liking the idea of these companies moving to much shorter 'chargeable' update schedules!

Does the school not have a support contract with RM? Can you not call them directly for support and/or ask them to give you a quick walk through?

I sure hope that not everyone is off on holiday, I've got a looooong summer of new installs/setups ahead of me!

Thanks, that worked perfectly. Now, does anyone know how to download the .crx files for any extensions that the ICT dept. may want downloaded? And also point 2, blocking most of the advanced settings.
