Did you run adprep/adprep32 from the 2008 R2 DVD on your old DC before installing the new 2008 R2 server as a DC?

It's better to get autodiscover working, any changes will then automatically update to the client and will also work with stuff where you cannot run a login script, such as Mac clients and activesync to mobiles.

Each pupil gets a laptop, but it has no O/S on it. They have to install Linux From Scratch, connect it to the school network and install all required software themselves. Give them ownership and responsibility for the laptop, it breaks they fix it with supervision from the ICT technicians. Don't abandon ICT lessons, but teach some usefull stuff like building and repairing PC's, networking, programming etc.

So ports 1 and 24 should communicate with each other but the other ports can't see them? - Yep If port 24 is untagged or tagged on vlan2 and the switch I am connecting via is just a dumb switch should it still ping? Depends on the dumb switch, it should, yes, but some won't.

Every port should have 1 untagged VLAN id, it basically means that is the default VLAN traffic from that port will belong to, so on your switch you would have all your ports assigned to the default VLAN, which is usually VLAN 1, except for your two ports which are assigned as untagged to VLAN 2 so all their traffic defaults to VLAN 2. If you are running the VLAN between switches, on the uplinks as well as the default untagged VLAN, you set any other VLANS where you want traffic to flow to other switches as tagged VLANs.

That's a slightly different argument in that is it better for an animal not to have existed at all or for it to have had a life, which if treated properly would be quite a happy life but shortened by being used as a food product.

I find the animal welfare reason a weird one for stopping eating meat, surely the best way to improve animal welfare is to buy and demand meat from sources with good animal husbandry and that have been slaughtered properly. The only way to stop bad husbandry and bad slaughtering of animals is to make it profitable to treat animals properly and unprofitable to treat animals poorly.
