No, the server doesn't need to be a dc and the domain functionality doesn't need to be altered. This is how our's is set up currently, 2008 member server, 2003 domain, 2000 forest functionality (need to fix that last one me thinks, just spotted last week)

Hi all, Just wondering what other CLEO schools are currently planning to do or have done. Nobody so far seems to have taken an interest and with the deadline fast approaching it looks like I'm going to have to try and stir some up (oh the joy!). So I was just wondering, do many schools in CLEO have something in place (and if so what if you don't mind me asking?) or are most holding off to see what MIDAS brings?

You could try using the callout dll Microsoft Windows DHCP Team Blog : DHCP Server Callout DLL for MAC Address based filtering If I remember rightly from when I played about with it it worked well, although if the laptop already has a lease it might take until the lease has expired before it will stop working completely, but I can't remember if that's exactly right or not.

We've had this discussion fairly recently after deciding to replace one of our existing boards of another brand and eventually decided to go with Smart over Promethean. In the end to use there wasn't much difference other then I'd used Smart before but not promethean, although that wasn't a big consideration, the main one being that in our area the majority of schools used Smart so it would probably be easier for staff to grab resources to use if need be. Saying that, we must have had a dodgy batch of boards as 3 failed within a week, but hats off to Steljes that after running through the usual diags they came out and replaced all 3 the following day after it was decided there wasn't anything else I could do.

For Paint.Net you can also run the exe with the nady /createmsi switch and it will place the MSI's in a folder on your desktop already to go. (doesn't really help with the origianl question though sorry)

Guessing this is a Windows Aspire One? I went through the whole support process asking how I could do it, even updating the backup program and connecting my external writer while doing it. Eventually they came back saying that it was possible using there tools to create a recovery dvd, but I could buy one for £50 by calling the Acer Store.

Thanks for the replys. In Orca I can see the RemoveFile table and my file isn't listed in here and doesn't (or shouldn't) change from when it is installed, so is the removefile table the same as the uninstall table or am I going blind? The componant doesn't have a 16 anywhere in it apart from the media (because that's all the instructions I could find which would help me do it, to create my own media) and the media last sequence is 1316 but I didn't think that would matter. Any other places I can look? Thanks.

Hi, Before the summer I was quite impressed with myself that I managed to create an MST to add a licence file to an install for Logicator and so could deploy it nice and easily using group policy. The only downside was that I couldn't get it to remove the licence file when it was uninstalled, but that didn't concern me to much and I would live with it. Now I'm thinking of doing the same for a couple of other packages and it's bugging me that I couldn't get this one to uninstall the licence file. Before I go through and create a couple more, can any point me in the direction of where I messed up on the original one for logicator so that I could get it to uninstall any files I add using orca? Thanks!

In all honesty it has seemed to work since I started (and presumably for a long time before that) without a problem, it only seems to have been in the last week that problems have started to occur. The two office machines both have Outlook Express open at the same time, now that you've mentioned it I'm wondering if possibly they are accessing the address book at the same time more often recently, but surely that would have occurred before now, but who knows. The way it's set up, from what I can work is just that the registry is modified to point the address book to the one stored on the network rather then on an individual machine. Thanks anyway.

Yup I've had no email all day here, last I heard was major server problem.

Another one of these things which was set up before I started and haven't had chance to change it over yet to a different way (not that I've got it sorted in my head yet). Currently, the PC's in the main office and offer offices arround school use Outlook Express for their email and the 2 in the main office share a Windows Address Book stored on the server with all the school contacts in there. Every day for the past week, this address book has started to become corrupt and each time I'm having to restore it from the last shadow copy, which is easy to do, but is now becoming a pain. Has anyone any idea what could be causing the address book to corrupt? As far as I can tell I haven't altered anything on either the server or any of the workstations that would make any difference and it worked fine for the last 6 months since I started. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have noticed this happening on 3 machines now but haven't had chance to look into it in any great detail. I did notice on the staff laptop which had this problem, using alt-tab to switch between windows seemed to trigger the report to run a little quicker, but didn't have any effect on the desktop machine I was showing someone on Thursday. asaik my machine is still running reports ok without any delay, but it's been a little while since I've run a report to say that for definate.

Generally web edition is just that, an IIS server with no AD componants which you would get with standard edition. Version comparison available here: Windows Server 2008: Compare Roles

How about using Virtual PC and differentiating disks. The only problem then would be making sure that the kids then didn't save the changes to the differentiating disk and an undo disk, although it would be a lot quicker to recreate that from the reference disk then recreating the whole machine. Possibly even a script of some kind to replace the differentiating disk at some point with a copy o it from somewhere else? Last bit is just a random thought of the top of my head, don't know whether the rest of it will be of any use though.

Not used CC4 because it kept being pushed back (and is still being pushed back from what I hear from my old boss), but with CC3 I created a base image of windows xp, created a differentiating disk or whatever it's called and then smart-cliented it to CC3 and it worked pretty well. Not sure whether the same process is available/would work with CC4 though.

Group policy preferences an option? I've started moving my printers over from local installs on each workstation to a GPP from a Windows 2008 member server (rest of the domain is 2003/xp) and setting the printer for the user and enabling the loopback on the policy lets me set the default and so far seems to have been working great.

Scratch deployed fine using an MSI here, akthough one other way of doing it is just copying the files to a share and running them from there.

That's what we use here and in all honesty I'm glad it was this rather then RM Securenet this year since A-Level day we had no internet until 4.15pm. Meant atleast with changing a few paths we could download them at someone's house and get them done in the morning dead quickly. Probably why I was asked to be arround. Thankfully the GCSE one's I just got to sit and have a drink for a while.

Was looking at this and haven't found the exact exercise yet. When I went on the 2273 training course I'm sure one of the exercises used for the recovery section was where the keyboard and/or mouse (can't quite remember that) and I think it was removing a registry keys from the CurrentControlSet. Whether you'd want to go down that route and whether it would still allow you to do what you wanted to do afterwards I don't know, but could be an option? I'll see if I can find the exercise in my book again.

Ah that's fine then, thanks! Means I'll finally be able to work out how much is actually being printed and then don't have to remember to install the printer on each workstation after each rebuild! That file one made me smile though, haven't got that far into GPP yet, but if I know that they right nonsense to the logs quite a lot I'll not worry about it to much. Thanks again!

Hi So we have had a new 2008 server installed at the beginning of the holidays to run SIMS so I thought I'd use it for some of the management side of things to such as deploying printers. So, I've set up a test OU and created the user preference to deploy a printer to that machine using update and then turned the loopback processing on so that it gets processed and set as the default, then linked the policy to the test OU and tried it out. So the printer seems to install without problem and I can check the options and everything, however was just glancing through the event log and spotted this: Event Type: Warning Event Source: Group Policy Printers Event Category: (2) Event ID: 4099 Date: 21/08/2009 Time: 22:33:09 User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: ITOFFICE2 Description: The client-side extension could not log RSoP data because it failed with error code '0x80041002 '. Searched google to no avail as to what might be causing it or whether it is anything to worry about. Any ideas? The other question I've to ask while I remember is, should I have ticked the run in users security context button or not? The computer which this is being deployed to is Windows XP SP2. Cheers!
