You do need to have both VLAN's tagged on yur link between switches.

I have been playing about for a while with the new Remote Access systems that come with the newer versions of windows server. I have it set up so that I have two virtual machines, one for pupils and one for staff. Now logging onto the remote access website as the correct user shows the correct pc to connect to. But as this is a windows 7 desktop when someone else logs on the first user is prompoted to log off. So I imagine I will have to have a big enough server to host about 20 virtual machines and put them in a pool for users to connect to. Is there a better way to do it?

They just voted to go two tier in bedfordshire this evening. All the middle schools will be torn down or redevloped over the next few years. Does this effect anyone?

The samsung MagicInfo LCD's I will second to be great quality. No need for having to source a suitable screen, and then suitable software. All built in and the software works well in that you create what you want on the screen. Not just buying a template for you to fill in.

We plan to host two virtual machines and have users connect externally through the remote desktop services. Also to publish applications via the web access site. will we need specific licenses above our CAL's we already have in place. We have previously just published a Terminal Server through ISA and have them remote to that single server.

We have the mac's set up so that the users network drive is their home location (unticking force local home directory on startup). When the users opens a file that was made in 2007 on windows it opens up fine. Opening up any previous versions howerver brings up a multitude of errors ranging from "cannot open read-only document....", "document.doc is being used by "another user" do you want to open a copy?" does anyone have any help on how to fix?

Does anyone have any fantastic "how-to" guides or helpfull documents on how to set up a Remote Desktop system using Server 2008.

On another mac I look in network but the mac mini shows up as a windows box so can't share screen.

The refresh rate was changed on a mac mini to one that the atattched monitor can't support. So now the screen is going a bit mad. I held down shift to get into safe mode which works fine. But any display changes are not saved once I restart. Leaving the mini to boot up normally makes the screen flash black, blue, see a bit of the desktop then flash black, blue & so on. Anyone have handy hints as to fix?

I had a very similar situation in my first job. there was one server to do everything and that sat in a computer room. It was two years old when I started and two years later it started to fall apart alot. I spoke to the Head about what would happen he said how much was my solution and he said no. I made everyone aware previously about what would happen if this thing decided never to turn on again and they all seemed worried. When it finally did happen and no one could log on, not access SIMS for registration, do any invoicing, do any of anyones normal day stuff the head got in such a panic that he ordered three times what I asked for. I resigned three months later.

We purchased the OS X Server unlimited client not to long ago, is it possible to upgrade this to snow leopard server? We have been able to upgrade all our new iMac's and mac mini's using the apple website, but I cant find anything similar for the server. Can anyone help?

Always thought that all playstations looked horrid anyway.

Antonio, I spent all of Saturday morning comparing our staff users to the pupils. they both have different file servers so I was initially thinking it was permissions on one of the levels of shared folders they save to. But it turns out that the pupils needed a tick in "read" in "Authenticated Users" of the security tab (accessible through advanced featured in AD) to be able to work. Why, I have no idea I dont really care, trying about two dozen things first mind you. But all I know is it works now and all our users can save to "home" which is the windows file server. Hi Antonio I have followed your guide to the letter on a mac mini that I had just put OS X on, I log in as a staff member and the desktop finder opens up the the network home (hoorah!) and the dock is blank minus finder icon. But when I log in as a pupil the dock is filled with the default icons, and the home is still local. Staff members in Active Directory are an OU under the domain so it goes domain > Staff > staffuser and the network home is set in AD as //server/staff/share/staffuser Pupils in Active Directory are split into different OU's for each year group. A 5th form pupil for example would be domain > Pupils > 5form > pupiluser and the network home is set to //server/pupils/yeargroup/pupiluser. Can you see anything that would give a hint as to why this wouldnt work with pupils?

Force local home was ticked, have now unticked this but this has created several problems. Now The network home on the dock can no longer connect. And none of our preferences we managed on WGM seem to have any effect. So now this is more of a problem because before we could get out network home through the dock, but could not access it through finder.

Hopefully my last newbie "how do i" question. We have our users network home mounted on the dock and it loads the home folder for them on our windows server. Our problem is now they have no way to save to this apart from saving local then dragging into. Does anyone have a clever or better way to do it? Would like for them to be able to go to File > Save as and have a location they can save to that is their network home. And ideally if possible not allow them local saves.

Okay, thanks for everyones help. Havingnever seen an AD-OD network before I had to make one I am never sure if its working as it should or just cobbled together.

Just to be clear in my mind. In a fully working AD-OD network where everything is perfect I shouldnt have to enter credentials once im logged in? Or should I just have to enter them once and save them to the keychain?

If kerberos is all working, should I still get log in prompts for Safari, Printing, just about anything that requires authentication? At the moment I can log in as a user using domain credentials, but when I open up safari I have to re-enter them again to authenticate.

I have set up an OS X server as per the many guides that are around here so that it is an OD master bound to AD. Clients are bound to both the AD server & OD. Users can log in and the preferences are working okay. But in Server Admin Kerberos is 'stopped'. I go to Core Services > Kerberos and New Ticket. I enter in my username and password and I recive a ticket. Does that mean that Kerberos is okay and working? Even tho it is stopped in Server Admin?

I have installed WGM on an iMac and have added the icons I wish to add. Another problem I am having is that although I delete all the icons apart from the ones I need, they still appear on the iMacs for example system Preferences is deleted from the dock in WGM but it still comes up on the machines.

We have started using WGM to lock down the machines and having a few questions arise. Mostly if we install an application on each iMac how do we get the icon to show up on the dock for all users? I guess we cant do it on the server.

I have done an AD-OD intergration so I have a mac mini running OS X Server that is bound to Active Directory. All our iMacs are bound to AD & the OD server. I am trying to make changes in workgroup manager to lock down the machines. I have made a user group called managed_pupils in workgroup manager, but when I add members it is only hwen I add users individually that the policies work. If I add a security group of say 'all pupils' which all our pupil accounts are members of it does not work. Can anyone tell me if I am going to have to add the users individually?
