So if i install it locally then they should be able to run it ok? We don't have any restrictions on what they can run, but do they need full access to the folder that it's installed to? Any other settings that are worth checking? thanks

Hi, I've been given this software to install on our network. I've tried copying the files from the cd to a network share then adding a shortcut to the exe file on another shared drive so kids can access it. When i run it it works fine, no problems. when a kid tries it comes up saying "Corrupt Install Detected" and then quits. I've found lots of posts on here about this software and how horrible it is to install. Has anyone actually found a nice easy way to install it so that kids can access it without having to be administrators and not loosing their network drives (i think the epal solution has this issue - correct me if i'm wrong!).... Can anyone help!?
-
Yes but what do you actually lose when someone uses your connection (and doesn't use all the bandwidth, access illegal stuff etc)? Nothing. I'm not saying it's not wrong but i don't agree that it's theft.....
-
Oh ok, i agree with you there. And definitely on the illegal stuff, i was just meaning small usage ie a google search and then quick browse of a site. If they download loads or access illegal sites then definitely an issue.
-
What exactly are you depriving them of..... they still have their connection (assuming you don't hog it all) (just playing devils advocate)
-
Probably would only get charged if you were using it excessively. I will admit that i have quickly googled something or checked a site on an open connection but i wouldn't ever dream of using it more than briefly. I believe that this is ok (although probably techically still illegal) and don't see the issue. If i downloaded loads of stuff or accessed illegal content then fine but a quick google doesn't hurt anyone (if they even notice!)

sorry to bump this to the top again, but i've finally discovered why it wasn't working. The domain functional level needs to be raised to "windows server 2003". Once that had replicated to our other DC's we were then able to change the Dial In permissions. ADModify worked brilliantly once we'd done this.

Take a look at this. It allows you to see and modify user account details in bulk. You might have to manually copy/paste the details in but it should be easier than going into each account in AD....

SOLVED - WDS - Error injecting Drivers....
bmdixon replied to bmdixon's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Wohoooo!! The newer version of AIK worked fine! Why oh why didn't i check that sooner! (I know it's a troll but it is very close to the dance i'm doing right now) -
SOLVED - WDS - Error injecting Drivers....
bmdixon replied to bmdixon's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Just found this post and am downloading the correct AIK.... hopefully that will fix it. I assumed (MISTAKE!!!!) that i had downloaded the latest version but now realised i've been using v1.0... *Fingers crossed!* -
SOLVED - WDS - Error injecting Drivers....
bmdixon replied to bmdixon's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Just double checked and it is a x86 boot image... i'm downloading another copy of vista (don't have one handy...) to try a new boot.wim file at the moment... EDIT: Found one, but still does the same. -
After struggling to get WDS to work creating a image last week i've now come across another problem! I'm trying to inject drivers into a boot image (.wim) and i'm getting the following error: It seems like it will let me inject x64 drivers but not 32bit.... all 32 bit drivers fail, all 64 bit drivers go in ok. I did manage to get them inserted into the capture image but can't work out why they won't work for this one. I'm using the boot.wim file from a Windows Vista cd, and the F1_WINPE.WIM and F3_WINPE.WIM bootable files from the AIK. It's the boot.wim that is causing problems..... Any advice would be brilliant!
-
Just wanted to say this is brilliant! I used to do something like this manually to try and find out how much we'd been printing but didn't do it per user.. now i know whose printing loads! Thanks!

Ok, it works (at least i now get the pxe menu) We had option 43 enabled on our dhcp server, as soon as i took that off (and 60, 66,67) it worked.
-
Just tried to reinstall it, but getting the same error. It has dhcp authorisation selected in the server properties in WDS, not sure what the permissions should be but even with full access to "Everyone" it doesn't work. Thanks for your help so far tmcd35

OK, gotcha. That is already set to "Respond to client computers..." Noticed that if i go into the advanced settings and click on images or tools tabs that i get an error: "Unable to contact the remote install server. The server may not be accessible at this time. The directory service has been updated with the new settings." Guessing this is not a good sign..... WDS service is started on the wds server though... Not running any vista machines but have extracted the 2 .wim and the boot.wim files from vista business cd.

Thanks for you help Did you upgrade from a RIS Installation? Are you running in native, mixed or legacy mode? No, a fresh install. Not upgraded from RIS. Running in Native mode. Have set those now, still not working.... Where is this?.... not sure what you mean... Yeah, both set to that already.

We've just set up a WDS Server as we're considering using this rather than Ghost (which we use at the moment). I've installed WDS (following the guide here. When i try and get a client to boot via PXE to capture an image it's saying "PXE-E74: Bad or missing PXE menu and/or prompt information". I've spent hours now trying to find a solution for this but not getting anywhere, so thought i'd call on the mighty edugeekers for advice! Please save me from my frustration!!!!!

Sharepoint - Hide search for certain users/groups
bmdixon replied to bmdixon's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
I found the solution.... creating a new master page for that site, without the search. I found it here. -
Hi, I'm setting up a site in sharepoint for our pupils to use as their homepage. I've managed to hide/remove most parts that i don't want them to see but i can't find a way to disable the search... I ideally would want to remove it completely but removing "People" and "All Sites" would work, so they can search the site they're on but not any others. But i want it accessible for staff so can't remove them completely... I've searched around but not found any way of doing it, so hopefully someone on here can help. Thanks

I'm having trouble downloading this.... is it broken? Loving this project though. Very useful

Student drop box (homework folder) permissions
bmdixon replied to ashdon's topic in How do you do....it?
Make sure they are dragging and dropping the files into the folder. They won't be able to view the folder or save directly to it. It definitely works with these permssions so there must be something else affecting it. -
We have Office 2007 rolled out across the whole school (primary, about 150 machines). No real issues with it after the initial learning curve. I actually get people saying how much better (and easier) it is than previous versions (We did the changeover with a rebuild of the whole network so everything changed not only office.)

Hello I'm trying to get squid/Squidguard to block sites and searches based on keywords and/or phrases. Up to now i've been putting full sites into Squidguard's lbl file and this has worked fine but i'm thinking it might be better to try and do some blocking based on keywords. If i add single words to the block.url file in /etc/squid then they are blocked fine but it won't work when i try and put in several words (from a google search). example: 'bloons' = blocked 'bloons+game' = not blocked 'bloons game' = blocked How can i get it to block things which have special characters in? Any advice would be appreciated Thanks
