Thanks Pete, do you have any idea about the 2nd problem???
-
2 problems here. 1. I have just configured WSUS to work on the server and in the computers section there is a list of the schoos computers as expected, but only 6-7 have reported in. The rest just say 'not yet reported' 2. My biggest worry, problem no. 2, is that any downloads i approve are being downloaded to the servers c: drive. this is now running dangerously low on disk space. How do i configure WSUS to store the downloads on another local hard drive? any help appreciated. James

This was one of the things i tried. not from UBCD but from within safemode. It doesnt fix the problem. Its not Vista, Its XP Pro. i cannot phone Microsoft because there is nothing i can do to the computer once its switched on. As i said earlier, as soon as i login it asks me to activate windows, i click on yes and then it logs me off again.

Hi all, Bit of an urgent one... I have recently run a repair installation on one of our workstations, and now i cannot login because it keeps saying that i need to activate Windows. I click on yes to do it now and then it logs me off. its a vicious circle. I can get into safe mode but you cant activate windows from within safe mode. i have googled the problem and tried a number of things but nothing seems to work. It wouldnt normally be a problem but this computer is one that is used in the office so needs to be sorted fairly quickly. i really dont want to reinstall windows because that takes a lot of time. Is there a way of changing anything in the registry to allow me to at least login to windows to activate over the net properly?? Many thanks James

We had an issue with the long filenames and it was down to the local profiles. As DrPerception said, if you try the delprof tool, that sorted the problem for me.

on Wednesday of this week i had a bit of a tidy up of the server, moved some files aournd and after there was approx 3.5gb of free space. I checked today and somehow were down to 210mb!!! i have used Treesize to look at whats taking up the room but there is nothing obvious. Is there a way of checking what has been saved in the last 2 days to the drive so that i can speak to the person thats responsible. James

Free 1GB Memory Sticks for Teachers & School Staff
Admiral208 replied to jamin100's topic in General Chat
a lot of people here signed up but nothing received yet!!! -
thanks, im not sure thats what im looking for. Its my fault for not explaining very well. I have 2-3 memory sticks that each have a different program that will load when the computer boots up. for example, Ultimate Boot CD, BackTrack 3, a Linux LiveCD, XP CD, etc etc. What im looking for is something so that when i boot from a single usb stick, it shows some kind of menu that i can select which of these different programs i want to load. I want a multi boot usb drive.
-
hi all I would like to create a sort of 'Ultimate Boot USB'. Is there a way of booting a computer from a usb drive to a menu where you have the option to load a number of different bootable programs such as UBCD, BackTrack, a Linux LiveCD with GParted etc etc. At the moment i have about 4 usb drives with different things on and i would like to condence them all into one. cant seem to find anything on the net. Free if possible. cheers James

Restoring files on a hidden partition
Admiral208 replied to Admiral208's topic in How do you do....it?
not an odd way to resolve the problem, the easiest for me. Anyway... I found out the error message and it doesn't help at all. it says to check for viruses, remove any newly installed hardware, run chkdsk then restart. For those of you that might understand this the technical information is *** STOP: 0x0000007b (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) -
My friend has asked me to take a look at his laptop which wont boot correctly, it will get to the Windows screen and then a BSOD will appear and the process will start again, looping the startup process. I have told him that the best way to resolve the issue is to format the computer and reinstall windows and start again from scratch. Here's where the problem lies because he has no recovery discs or anything. There is a hidden partition which contains what looks like an image of the original folders that would have been installed, i.e. Documents and Settings, Program Files, Windows and a few others. Here is my question. How can i get the files off of the hidden partition and onto the Primary Partition? The hidden partition doesnt seem to be formatted. Any software that i can use to clone the hidden partition onto the other. Thanks James

Hi all, im having a problem installing software using group policy. We have a Suite of 23 computers and i have set IE7 to deploy through group policy. This has worked fine on about 5-6 machines, the rest everytime i switch on the computers, goes through the process of installing managed software Internet Explorer 7... and it works. But the next time i switch on the computers, it happens again. throught the same process. This is very annoying because its quite a lengthy process. All of the machines have the same hardware, as far as im aware, they are all set up the same, they all have the same permissions, but there is something that must be different. Any ideas??? thanks James

[ms office - 2003] Word saving 0kb files
Admiral208 replied to Paid_Peanuts's topic in Office Software
i had the same problem, it too was folder permissions. The students needed the 'Delete' permission and this solved it. James -
OK, It's sorted. I had to move the user from the staff OU, to the Administrators OU to be able to access the Advanced tab in Internet Properties. I reset the settings and then moved the user back into the Staff OU. What a hassle!! Thanks for the replys everyone. James
-
rush_tech, I cant get into the advanced tab.
-
it could be that, but everyone else is not having this problem. I think i will have to create a new profile and copy all of their stuff over. James
-
yeah, i have tried that and the cookies.
-
One of the teachers in our school is having a problem with internet explorer. None of the images are loading. The placeholders are there but no images. Normally i would try and reset the settings back to the defaults, but the Advanced Tab has been disabled in group policy. Am I missing something really simple?? She can right click on the placeholder and select 'Show picture' and that will work. All the other users are not having the same problem, just this one. Any ideas? James
-
Thanks for the replies The starange thing is that this only happens on about 5-6 computers. All the others are fine. Might be a silly question, but can computers have permissions, like users can? Its just like the 6 computers dont have the correct permissions to read the group policies that invoke the folder redirection and other user policies. James

Hi all, im getting event ID (1085) for a certain number of computers in the event log and this message relating to folder redirection. "The Group Policy client-side extension Folder Redirection failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension.". The error message immediately before this is Event ID 111 and the error message is "Unable to apply folder redirection policy, initialization failed.". This is causing real problems because i think its related to another problem where he computers arent loading the user group policies either! This has really stumped me. Thanks James

ok, update: when i do gpresult, i says that the laptops have applied the user group policies but in reality, they havent! the laptops are in the same OU as a number of other computers and the other computers are fine! could the laptops have permissions attached to them the same as users do? could they be not allowed to apply them? I formatted one of the laptops and reinstalled windows XP SP3, added it to the domain and the relevant OU and its still having the same problem!?!?! Im really stuck now. james
-
Loopback is not configured. I have tried gpupdate /force and still the same in the gpresult. nothing in the event log that looks odd laptops wired in. im really stuck on this one! might have to reinstall windows if no joy soon. Another few days wasted!

can someone help? bit of background info; our internet settings are set using GPO, as well as desktop settings and printers. Its the same on every computer in the school. ok, i have just setup 5 new laptops for the staff to use. If I log on to any of them using my username and password, they're fine. everything works. If i log in as anyone else, the profile is loaded, but the group policies arent. This means no internet, printers or desktops. I have checked AD and the laptops are in the correct OU's and the users can log in to any other computer in the school and the settings are loaded without any propblems, so its definately not a user issue. Its going to be the same issue on all 5 laptops as i have syspreped them and then ghosted. When they are logged in, i can ping them from any computer. If i run gpresult it says that the last time the group policy was applied for the USER SETTINGS was n/a The last time the group policy was applied for the COMPUTER SETTINGS was 25/02/2009 at 10:50:05 Why is the computer settings being applied but not the users settings? Any help much apreciated. Thanks James

Hi all, right... 2 problems here... 1. I have just discovered PSEXEC. I would like to use it to load up a certain web page on all the machines in the IT Suite. This is what i have been using... psexec @ictsuite -i c:\windows\ie7\iexplore.exe BBC - Homepage where '@ictsuite' is a .txt file containing a list of all the computer names in the it suite. ictsuite-01 ictsuite-02 etc. etc. i thought this was right but it will only load up the web page on the first computer in the txt file. 2. I tried to load a file using PSEXEC that is stored in a mapped network drive. when i type in the file location, it says that the file cannot be found. whats going wrong? any help would be much appreciated. Cheers James
