installing software with a Product Key via GPO
Admiral208 replied to Admiral208's topic in How do you do....it?
thanks for the replies, i think i have sorted it. The software in question is called 'Communicate: In Print' After reading info on the net, i have discovered that i need to do an administrative install. (run setup.exe /a). this will create an MSI with the product key registered. I too am not a fan of packaging software. too many things can go wrong. Thanks all James -
hi all. i have got a piece of software that i want to install via group policy. the problem is that with the local install i have to insert the product key. How can i overcome this problem when im not going to be sat in front of the computer? Cheers James

Sorted!!! All i had to do was to create an exception in the firewall. i asked me if i wanted to unblock it on one machine, but i had to do it manually on the other. Thanks all James

thanks all, i have downloaded that patch that you are talking about AngryTechnician. What changes would i need to make to allow UDP traffic through the firewall? dont really want to disable the firewall completely. getting frustrated! James

Hi everyone. Hope someone can help me. I have just downloaded the freeware command and conquer 95 gold game from the net. after getting all excited about beating a colleage in a head to head LAN match, i realised that there is no network option available. After a bit of research, i found a patch that would allow me the option of a network match. The problem now is that the two machines i have installed it on just wont 'see' eachother in the game. when i start a new LAN game the other machine doesnt pick it up. Has anyone else had any experience with this?? Is there a simple remedy?? or something im missing. i havent used the network to play games before, is there anything that i need to do on the computers? Cheers James

We normally have a plain blue background with the school logo, but i have just given the students a Christmas Tree with some snowmen sat around it. thought it would brighten the place up a bit and it brought a smile to the teachers faces when they saw it for the first time, and the kids have a little giggle. Think im going to continue when it gets to special 'events'. world cup, olympics, notable dates. etc etc. a bit like google does. keeps the morale up!! James

Hi all, I am having some real problems seting up IIS on our server. i have created a few html pages for a basic intranet, with a few links to different web sites etc etc. i am strugglig to find any guides on the net, my real problem is that i cant access the page unless i type in the server IP followed by the port i have set it up on. //[serverIP]:[portNo.]/ this works but i would rather not have to type that in every time. how can i set it up to be //intranet/ ?? Does anyone have a written guide on setting up IIS? any help would be great Thanks James

Hi all, I was just wondering... a] how many Group Policies does everyone have for installing software? For example, do you have a GPO for each individual piece of software, or do you run them all under one? b] how well organised are everyones Active Directories? i have found myself organising all the users and computers into smaller OU's... for example, i have split the students into year groups, i have separated the computers in our suite, teachers laptops, laptops for the students interested to hear how everyone else works James

i cant remote in because once it gets past the initial windows xp screen, all i can see is the mouse, i cant do anything else. even when it gives me the option of booting up using the last known good configuration, that also doesnt work.

Thanks Michael, I will try the F8, one thing that i didnt mention is that when the computer powers on, it stays that windows was not shut down properly, and it gives me a few different options, - Safe Mode - Safemode with command prompt, etc. etc. even when i try to go into safe mode, i get the same problem, its like the explorer process wont load up.

thanks powdarrmonkey, that would do the job but its not just microsoft updates, there are a few updates for programs that the local council provide as well. I got given it on a cd, copied the whole thing to a folder on the shared drive and need to run the 'runme.exe' file when a user logs on.

ok, thanks. its not a program, its an .exe file full of updates, IE7, the most recent .NET framework etc. so i cant use the start menu option. i have never used or written a script before, can anyone recommend where i can find a template to do this? or where do i need to look in AD?

i have just tried to install server 2003 as a second os. Big Mistake. i now cant get back into vista, all i get is a message just afer POST saying 'Error Loading Operating System'. I tried to install the second OS on a seperate partition and have since removed it to try and get vista working again. no joy though. i put in the original vista disk and run the repair tool you get, it came up with 2 errors. the first was that the 'boot manager was corrupt', so it fixed that, then it said something like the 'boot partiton code was corrupt' and it went on to tell me that it had also repaired that fault. the repair tool says that it cant find anything wrong but i am still getting the original error message and cant load vista. I have been scouring the net for nearly 2 days and cant find any sort of answer. i really dont want to format the drive. Please, someone help me!!!!! Thanks James

Hi, I would like to install a copy of Server 2003 on my home computer which is currently running vista. I want to do this because i am about to start taking some networking exams and i want something that i can 'play' around with without there being any consequences. What would be the best way of doing this?? I have an external hard drive that i could install it to, but im not sure if that would work. Can i install it to a local drive and switch between the two OS'? Any Ideas?? Thanks James
