  1. Ah - sorted it. It was trying to apply the policies but not getting enough time so I followed the steps outlined in this article: https://serverfault.com/questions/44257/group-policy-installation-failed-error-1274 and that worked. Still odd that it's only occasionally a problem - the same policy applies across the school without problems.
  2. Odd one, noticed this a few times recently, not consistently though. When building new machines (Windows 7 64bit) they are connecting to the domain, I can add them to the right group and apply the policies they need. I can connect to them remotely, so they are definitely being recognised by the network with their names. However, they just won't install ANY software from group policies. It's so bizarre. I've tried readding them to the domain, renaming them, deleting them from the domain and readding and they just won't work. More recently, the solution was just to reinstall. But it's odd and frustrating. Has anyone had this before? Thanks.
  3. Exactly this - people don't report damage. So when someone comes in and says 'By the way, did you know there are 7 broken keyboards, 2 broken mice, 3 missing mice and a missing keyboard and 3 of the computers don't work in room 12' it can be the first you've heard of it. So it's often fruitless even looking on CCTV as it could have been done at any point. If damage were reported at the beginning / end of each lesson, CCTV would work wonders.
  4. This is classroom management, you're right. We don't have this problem in our classrooms where there is an assigned teacher as they take a pride and ownership. 'Drop in' rooms are another story though. It seems to happen when no staff are around. We've just seen these: Accuratus WP127 Flexible Keyboard Which would solve the key issue (albeit at a massive cost), but then it's only a matter of time until they start carving their names in them and playing with scissors on them. Maybe projected keyboards are the future for schools...but then...they'd shine the lasers at each other...
  5. Likewise - does anyone have one of these around? Thanks
  6. There is nothing in the event viewer. Simply an information entry under system which says 'The Cirqa Data Service service enetered the stopped state.' This is entered for each time I try to start it - no entry to say it has started though.
  7. So we are upgrading our Library from Heritage to Heritage Cirqa. We did the trial as they suggest etc. and now want to complete the upgrade. Following their instructions, with them actually remoting in and supporting, we stopped all Heritage services on the server, moved the necessary data files and went to restart the services. Which now won't start... 5 of them are dependant on each other - the 'lead' service which won't start gives this error: It reads 'The Cirqa Data service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.' I've rebooted the server (can't do often as it's in use all day), to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks!
  8. So I've currently got a Nikon D3100 which I've had for about 4 years. With the 18-55 lens and a Tamron 70-300 lens. I'm considering upgrading the body. Over the years my interest in photography has increased and it's quite a hobby now. However, would I be better to upgrade the body, or to buy a new lens or two, and if so, which would be a good way to expand my lens selection? I take photos of a lot of different things from nature to lots of scenes with people in. I'd love some advice from the people who know best! Thanks.
  9. Thank you @stevejp - I really appreciate this very honest response, as it is what is making me concerned about teaching. I know this is the opinion shared by many in the profession. You have described me exactly - I want to teach. To make a difference. Not to spend all my time filling in pointless documentation. (I know there is always going to be a paperwork aspect and I'm prepared for that, just not to the extent people say it is now). The other part of me thinks... is now a good time to get into teaching? Surely the profession cannot continue to spiral as it is currently and there will be a breaking point. Which I imagine can't be far off. At which point maybe it will improve and I'll have gotten on board at the right time. Does that make sense?
  10. That is the only way in I think - you end up with that bursary either way. But I couldn't do it otherwise as I will have to leave my job - so that's basically the salary for the year, so not quite the incentive they think it is. I'm going to apply - I think I might just be worn out from studying for so long. @witch - thanks, I'm gonna go for it, as I really don't know what I'd do otherwise haha!
  11. Yes, I don't necessarily want to work in mathematics - I enjoy it, but I've had to work at it - it doesn't come easily. But I will have a degree, and just hope it will be helpful into propelling me into some sort of career.
  12. That was the idea many years back, but not practical these days. I think the question, which of course no one can answer for me, is, what on earth do I want to do?! They let you believe you'll know the answer to this when you're in school, but it's just not true - I'm 30 and still struggling to decide!
  13. Oh teaching definitely. But that's the problem - British teachers do very little 'teaching'. And that is what is making me wobble a bit. I want to teach - I understand there will always be paperwork etc. to do, but it seems extreme at the moment. IT is not my area really, I have no IT qualifications. @Snoochieboochies I'd like to do a job that does some good in the world...! I looked at cancer researches grad schemes but they are closed for next year (to be expected of course) - but I just want my career to make a difference.
  14. So, I'm nearing the completion of my BSc in mathematics. (Studied part time, alongside working as an IT tech). When I started studying, 6 years ago, it was with the aim of becoming a mathematics teacher at secondary level. I'd love to be a teacher, but the more I see of the career, the less appealing it is. Teaching seems to be a small part of a career in teaching. I'm already tired of spending my evenings and weekends studying and I'm not sure I want to go into a career in which it will be necessary to continue this pattern. I love working in a school though, and working with teenagers. Every day is different and I really want to make a difference to peoples lives in my career. But now what? If I don't go into teaching, what am I supposed to do with this degree? I would like to be earning more money than I do as an IT tech that's for sure and I don't want to have studied all this maths for no reason! Just throwing it out there for suggestions really. I've not completely written off the idea of teaching, just it was always a bit of a pipe dream, and now the reality is coming closer I'm suddenly starting to really think about it properly. I know you guys all come from a variety of backgrounds so would really value your opinions. Thanks
  15. No the wifi is turned off on the machine. I'll check that out @free780. It's just odd. It seems to be on the network for all intents and purposes. I've sorted the firewall so I can ping it now and remotely connect. I can access shared drives from it. The internet is fine. The only thing is the Windows activation won't run and this message. I think they might be connected.
  16. Thanks everyone. @DJ-1701 - it appears in the network box in the task bar - if you click on the network icon, it displays the domain name and 'action needed'. It doesn't seem to be internet related as , all of this said, the internet does actually work. But I can't work on our network - I can't activate Windows or access shared drives etc. Turning off the firewall allowed me to ping into the machine, so there must be a exception policy I'm missing there. @Kiest26 that sounds interesting - do you have any more info on that please? Thanks. @kennysarmy - I've made a new OU in active directory now, away from any other policies (except default domain policy) and also a new user away from any other use policies. Creating new policies and applying them where necessary but still having this error. Just can't seem to fathom it at all.
  17. So we are right in the basic basics of experimenting with Windows 10. Only just installed it on one machine so please bear with! Does anyone know about this? I can't ping the machine, but it can ping mine. It's picked up a group policy of software and has installed it. It allows me to log on, yet it says this? I'm just now trying to sort out the proxy settings but ours are set by user and they appear to be set fine already using the current policy?
  18. Gah I need to keep an eye on my notifications! Only just saw this. What a pity. Thanks for thinking of me though!
  19. (Thank you NVQs in business admin!)
  20. So we are trying to upgrade Flowol with Robot Mesh. But our accounts department just can't seem to get in touch with them in order to set the account up. (They could just order, but as they aren't on our system, it would make payment tricky). Does anyone know either how to get hold of them, or another place to purchase? Thanks
  21. Image Resizer for Windows is great. It works as a right click option, so just highlight all the images you want to compress, right click and select the size. Really easy. See here for more information: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/av-multimedia-related/178154-right-click-photo-resizer.html
  22. Thanks @difinity Managed to sort it - as one of them worked, I crossed checked all the settings. Under "Display Settings" the "Video Standard" was set to 60hz on the camera with the problem, and 50hz on the one which worked. So I changed it to 50hz and voila! It works!
  23. This is a Trendnet PoE camera. Powered by a PoE hub. I have 2 cameras the same, installed in the same manner, practically next to one another. One is fine. The other, flicks off and online all night - it appears to start doing it as soon as the lights are turned off and it begins to use infrared lighting. Of course, I'm getting an email every time it does this, so you can imagine the inbox in a morning! Has anyone seen this before? I'm not sure how to proceed with fixing it. Thanks
  24. Thanks for this Ant. Very kind. Thanks for this - I've not done this before so the guide is helpful! I often see people recommending this, but wasn't sure how. I'll do that Arthur - hadn't noticed this page. Thank you!
  25. @DJ-1701 I'm not sure how to do that, hence looking for the msi for now, just to get it done. I did think of @Arthur but didn't want to bother him as he did some brilliant VLCs for me the other week (REALLY helped me out there!) and don't want to be a mither!
