  1. Pi in the class on their own are not great devices. If you get a teacher wanting to use Minecraft/Python API then they are the bees knees And good for physical computing but a lot to said for using Arduinos for this instead as much more compatible with exisiting desktop/laptop investment Simon Can't be beat for making easy robots
  2. A+ is excellent when you have made something and then want to deploy just using WiFi or no Lan connection - £17 CPC Look at Agobo for cheap Pi based robot using an A+ 4tronix Agobo review – a cheap, hackable robotics kit for the Raspberry Pi | Raspberry Pi Pod
  3. Have you tried the obvious and used the desktop wifi config program to see what happens - its got lots of options in there I don't have any fancy WiFi VLAN stuff myself so can't help Simon
  4. the 2B model will help out with all the non-educational stuff At my level, ScratchGPIO can max out a single core as its running Scratch and a 3 threaded python background prog at same time So I 2B users should see quite a benefit but means I might have to freeze current version to run OK on 256MB machines (A+ - old Bs) and then move on with the new 2B One thing I need to try out (I'm currently trying to update my master SD card to run on my new 2B) is how Snap runs on the new hardware as it wasn't really usuable on older models If it does cruise OK then we will have all the advantages of a Super Scratch on a Pi - my fingers are crossed JFI people have reported 36 times speedups with mutilthreaded programs (on a good day with wind behind them) Simon
  5. Saving PI work needs some effort going into it My samba auto install Auto install a Simple Samba Setup - Cymplecy (Simplesi) At my primaries, I jsut make sure each group gets same Pi each week - manually method but simple You could have a little batch script to copy from a certain ip to a certain user folder maybe I've been waiting for FOundation to help out with this but they've done naff all - don't really seem interested in practical help to schools so we need to do it ourselves I'll be doing more of this as I use Pi more and more in my schools on a regular basis but any help from proper net mans always welcome Simon
  6. Hi - I use them in KS2 to control leds/motors etc using my ScratchGPIO I VNC into them from laptops Got several techniques (WiFi - direct laptop-Pi CAT5) Issues with any technique but best to suck and see at each school what method you/teacher find best ScratchGPIO5 - Cymplecy (Simplesi) Simon
  7. Speak of the devil ....... And in other news - hello @witch
  8. Keep up That got superceded on Monday by the B2 The fact that I bought a B+ on Friday might have had something to do with the trouble that has followed Well - me and the other 200,000 who bought the old model with 1/2 the memory and 1 core vs 4 of the new one! And imaging if you were a company with £K of the old model? And then think that didn't this happen 6 months ago "fool me once - shame on you - fool me twice shame on me" Simon
  9. Your new here I can see - it won't be long before you realise why? I have a bad attitude - I treat everyone the same - I speak without thinking - Worse - I speak after thinking!!!!! I love the Raspberry Pi computer concept and its allowing us to do stuff in schools that wasn't possible before (or I hadn't though was possible anyway) But the org is full of b^**&^y geeks (and VERY brainy ones at that) and they are unable, at times, to think like muggles so when muggles don't like something and complain - they are VERY dismissive The trouble being, is that some of us muggles are quite brainy as well and just because we are telling them that they got something wrong or are not doing it the right way - the wizards REALLY REALLY get upset A few of their mods on there wouldn't make it thru Sith acadamy because they were are too harsh -come to think about it - one or two on here........ I think that might give you an idea about me : Simon
  10. Having been "banned permanently" from another Pi forum I will be hanging around here again (and twitter of course) Sorry for staying away Simon
  11. I have an HP1000 Business Inkjet at one of my schools. It just works. Day in - day out. Add paper and ink Thats it. I like to nominate it for a Edugeek Equipment Lifetime Achievement award Simon

    Day1

Arrive back at a school after holidays and just about to try and sort out a few issues and the mains decides it wants a game of Yo-Yo
  13. No thats something I can get my head around as it makes sense - Google wanted me to do the same thing for a school to get Google Apps when I tried a few years ago. In the meantime, the school head decided to switch web-site hosting to another company so we are having to wait till the dust settles and the domain gets transferred to the new hoster Simon
  14. Well I talked to OneConnect and they say its because the school website is hosted externally and that they need the DNS zone information from them, then they will add some extra information to this and then they will send it back to the schools website hoster. Does this make sense to anyone. Will the website hoster know what's needed to be done? Has anyone in Lancs done this exercise as part of the 365 migration? Simon
  15. I hate DNS zone stuff - it always seems gobblygook to me I'll have to have a play 1st with wit hmy old w2k3 servers to see if I can work out what to do ebfore tyring to tackle my wife's school 2012Server! Simon
  16. My wife (Burase at a primary) got this email from OneCOnnect Thank you for talking with me this morning, as discussed, the migration to Office 365 requires the alteration of all DNS within the Lancashire schools system in order maintain the connectivity to each server. All DNS within BTLS sphere of control have been already amended. We are now requesting all schools with their own Domain servers to provide DNS zones files to BTLS, I appreciate you may need to acquire this information from your service provider, but if you could request this today from them, hopefully they could get the files back to you to send to us on Tuesday. Why? What? How? ??? Now I know that I'm a bit dim but Do they want the schools internal server - can't see why since basically it just makes lookup requests to their DNS servers and caches the results or is it because the school website is hosted externally and I need info from the hosting company? Confused of Lancs
  17. Found it Simon
  18. Can someone PM me the Lancsngfl SQL database admin page as for the life of me I can't remember it and its not cached on this server for some reason ! Ta Simon

Simon
  24. Interesting Just checking before I call - your using Lancs OneConnect as ISP with Lightspeed and not had to do anything to get App Store access? Simon
  25. I've come back to find I can't access the App Store in any of my schools so I'm putting this down to some global lightspeed issue. What URLs do I need to unblock? Simon
