I use a scheduled task added to the machines at startup (via startup script in gpo) to shut them down at 22:00. a program i wrote runs on the server and queries sccm database (could quite easily query ad though) and boots the machines at 6:30

WINE is nonsense most of the time, you could run that in a vm and pass thru the usb device.

its definately going that way, at the end of the day you don't get any thanks for running it, only grief when it doesn't work.

zimbra client acutally works with exchange. imap but what ever its better than OWA. might setup a zimbra server alongside the exchange and compare, have to do aliases in exchange to forward to zimbra for the zimbra users.

vmware workstation. you can manage the vm's just not the hosts

i found the location of stuff is very logical once you know where it is, sometimes its a little frustrating trying to find something you've never used or setup once if you are trying to troubleshoot under pressure because something isn't working.

windows is only any good when vmware or linux is managing the hardware for it.

I make a point of buying machines with proper serial ports, I searched for about a month to find this laptop I'm typing on, HP machines at work I buy all have proper serials. Serial to USB convertors are terrible, barely work and then you get a different one that is blatantly the same device but someones modifiyed the firmware so the vendor // device id is different and the drivers are signed so you agghhhhhh..

So whose running NIX on their main desktop? i've recently switched my main work PC to opensuse 12.3 from windows and i'm surprised how much more productive i've been. the last straw for me was changing the resolution of one of my monitors and windows blue screening.

Especially now they are outsourced and run by private companies.
