speed improvements especially for most teachers usage is going to be gained from an ssd rather that an higher spec processor as the bottleneck nowadays tends to be disk IO. + the hefty the processor the hotter its going to run.

heard really good things about lenovo. got a nice toshiba personally, but that was more about finding one with a real serial port ( for configuring switches etc ) than anything else, but still very nice.

had a play with some music over the weekend. I couldn't get soundforge to work under wine, so although not open source it is free and does run under wine very easily as its portable is wavosaur. if you need something for sound editing and don't like audacity. FLStudio runs okay under wine as well ( i know its not open source, just thought i'd mention it )

How do you feel about hkey_classes_root ?

we use app-v and package the SIMS client with that, because if the app-v client is working on the machine sims will work (and all other app-vd apps), no inconsistencies between machines. It does take longer at upgrade time (later today, *fingers crossed*) i.e. an hour or two to package it and is a little fiddly especially to get things like exams and NT6 to work, you really do have to sacrifice to the gods to get it to work, but there is no worrying / running round machines that users have managed to a. cancel the upgrade b. redirect the shortcut so it points straight to puslar.exe c. also removes the need to give the users full control over HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Classes_Root (CAPITA YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES FOR THIS, simsperms.bat)

ANyone allowing google docs? Reasons for against? I don't want to say no for the sake of it. But if there are issues arising it would be good to here your experiences.

How safe is picsearch I know it was unblocked by the LA but they let adult content through via google images so that isn't much to go on. Can't find any adult content, just thought I'd check, also are people just allowing picsearch or the whole category? Image Search seems a tad dangerous
