hello @odysiuos welcome to edugeek. most changes you make in text files will be saved by the act of exiting the text editor and saving, if you save and exit it will be saved. personally i prefer nano Ctrl + X to exit press Y to save or VI press esc and type wq: changes made via ifconfig or ethtool aren't persistent on linux, you need to make the change in the actual configuration file for it to be persistent across reboots / service restarts. the location varies from linux distro e.g. on mint /etc/network/interfaces e.g. on centos 1 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 Where it is on smoothwall, i'm not a 100%. I asked and they were a bit evasive about, possibly understandably if your going to expect them to support the product. Personally i haven't needed to make interface changes from the cli, the gui has seemed to cover what i need so far. what exactly are you trying to achieve ? It might be possible from the GUI, which would be a better option from the support point of view.

WEP is incredibly easy.

because the encrytion uses the SSID name together with the passkey. the more unique and long both of them are more processor time it takes to crack and much less likely that the "basic rainbow tables" pack includes your SSID and Passkey.

also make the SSID very long and random

if its anything like aerohive, it works fine with no connection to the cloud, it just means you can't make any new configuration changes to it.

i wouldn't use ubuntu or a derivative for servers, the thought makes me shudder. I do think mint is good for desktops as things like chrome/flash work easily. Personally i almost always use suse for servers unless the service/app dictates otherwise. @localzuk does 4od work for you? that and five demand don't work on my laptop. youtube and iplayer are fine.

old habits die hard. personally i prefer command line to gui most of the time. i was showing someone our switches the other day, and they mentioned they preferred using the web interface and i realised i hadn't even bothered enabling the web gui. I think its force of habit with most linux systems for me to use whichever command line tool they have for packages, as i find it easier to do something like apt search vlc | grep lib than look through lots of packages on the gui, i also have bad memories of using fedora a few years back and the package manager never working mainly because packagekitd was doing somethin in the background, by the time i'd loaded the terminal to kill/disable packagekit i might as well stay there. same, i also use it for my desktop machine at work

I'm suprised you've had that with mint? apt install vlc would play most media files. i used to go back to windows but haven't felt the for some time, in fact the idea of using windows doesn't fill me with confidence. i've just installed visio on mint using wine, and its working pretty well which pretty much removes my day to day need for my windows vm at home i do still use a windows vm at work, mainly for outlook. the breaking point for me at work with windows was when i adjusted the screen resolution on my second monitor and it blue screened on me.

i was using windows at the time, but its also something to forget to put in the laptop bag, where as if your setting up a new switch you almost always get a normal serial lead with it. i just find the usb to serial just one more thing which is unecessary as far as i am concerned, they've only removed the serial ports as a cost saving exercise.

Unfortunately my primary concern when buying this laptop was that it had a real serial port which are as rare as rocking horse something these days.

you could if it didn't hang like every thing else in sight.! i found it quicker to manually work out what had the open file, turned out to be vmware workstation and an ISO on the software share.
