What's the logic behind this? I hear a few schools going down this route, and I'm curious...

Just create a "signage" user and target the user policies at that - log that user in for signage purposes, job done.

We have PCs in every classroom (FoC) and a bank in the staffroom, and issue laptops to teachers for working from home. However, this is a legacy policy that I am pushing to change now that we have robust web-based RDS. The prevailing opinion is "if we ask people to work from home, we must provide them with a laptop", which IMO doesn't stand up very well to scrutiny. I'm looking to replace it with a small bank of loan laptops as politics allows!

My pessimism was really linked to the wishy-washy quote from CGI (which, it seems, is the BBC's fault ultimately - poor journalism), and the fact that so many iPad projects that I've seen haven't had anything like the level of research and planning that this one evidently has. I'm sure many of us know a school or MAT that has introduced them without a clear goal in mind! I'm likewise surprised to see that the iPad came top in their VFM assessment, but it'll be interesting to see how this one develops.

From a skim of that Council report, it seems that they have thought it out very clearly (not that I'm surprised - the Scottish central and local governments usually are very sensible) - good for them and best of luck with it! If it works well it might be a template for other areas to use.

Mmmm I do recall something about that coming up in the KOTOR games (something along the lines of someone asking "why doesn't everyone use them") - that does make a lot of sense.

I completely agree about disarming opponents, hadn't thought of that! Not so sure about the quarterstaff comparison - there's minimal risk to the wielder with a quarterstaff (e.g. if you accidentally whack yourself with it the worst you'll have is a bruise, with a lightsaber you could chop bits off!). I agree that they'd probably be good against multiple opponents however. Then again I'm not really well versed in martial arts - I think in the Star Wars universe I'd be building the weapons (perhaps big planet destroying things!) rather than using them!

I like this bit: It seems sensible, and will teach students to look after technology. However, this, from the supplier... *ahem*, sorry "consulting service" seems like a load of codswallop management speak. How exactly will it free up teachers? How will it "boost their control" [assuming we're still talking about teachers here]?. Have the T&L goals been clearly defined? Are there a set of digital books or programs linked to the Scottish curriculum they'll be using? Or is it more "students + iPads = magic" like this failed Californian programme.

Not sure why you'd want the dual-bladed thing anyway - more likely to slice your own arm off than be any use! Sure you can spin it to deflect blaster fire, but then... you can do that with a regular one too, surely?

Intrigued! No real need for it here as all PCs have the same two follow-me print queues, but I do want to try it out in case it might help somewhere else I may end up!

Hmm, fair enough, that is what they recommend (note - you linked to the 2008 R2 version, but it's the same in the current guidance). I'm skeptical as to how often not doing that causes actual problems though.

I do the same - 100 GB VHDX, keep everything there. Not sure why you'd want a separate one for SYSVOL.

I get why they're doing it, trying to raise more money using the people who do watch, but it's also going to push more people away from terrestrial TV, isn't it?

I don't have any ideas beyond perhaps trying with a different model of PC to further narrow the problem down. I'm mostly posting to keep track of the thread, because this is one of the weirdest issues I've ever heard of and I have to know why it's happening!

What issue exactly are you facing? I'm sure people here would be happy to help you with some steps to try before needing to pay a consultant

I think unrestricted personalised plates are a recipe for disaster (just like this), and am glad the UK doesn't allow them. Not sure why the US does to be honest (income for the DMV probably...)

Yep, start with MDT as it's free - if you find you can't do what you need or want more power then look at SCCM. For many schools SCCM is overkill.

Best to give servers descriptive names: "DC01", "FILE01", etc. Whether you include the organisation name depends on your environment (e.g. are you part of a MAT with a single forest or domain trusts?) and personal preference.

Depends what the luminaire is (i.e. is it a lamp, a ceiling light, where is it in the house, etc.), but anything with a standard E27 (screw) or B22 (bayonet) mount would be better than a GU10!
