In regards to CLEO hosting moodle, it might be worth contacting LUNS about the cost to continue hosting as they were hosting moodle it on behalf of CLEO and I hear is quite a bit cheaper than the BT pricing.

Serco wouldn't need to be registered with the Data Commissioner (ICO) under the Data Protection Act as they would be a Data Processor not Data Controller. In a cloud environment the school would still be the Data Controller.

I spoke with the product manager for progresso at bett. Progresso is the replacement for facility, any new schools moving to serco before nov 2011 will be given facility, migration to progresso will be school led from nov 2011. Schools moving to serco after nov 2011 will be given progresso. Progresso will include a SIF agent, cost is currently unknown.

I have used ipsCA certificate they are still having issues with firefox. They are also limited on what you can actually do with the certificate, they will only allow server authenication nothing else like client authenication etc.

From what I have read about SIFWorks you can add custom vb scripts on to SIF action like delete which would be able handle archiving of files.

Link2ICT in Birmingham use SIF to provision users on to their IdP platform and their hosted Moodle. They use SIF as their schools use a mixture of CMIS and SIMS.net. This is a very tricky issue. AFAIK under the Education Act a Parent has rights to see an data/information that a school stores in connection with their child. It could be argued that this includes emails. This clause overrides the DPA as if it didn't a student could bar a Parent from seeing their school report etc. A schools does have a get out clause if they believe the information could endanger the child. The big NO is that the parent would have access to other students email address. The only out would be if you printed out every single email censored all the personal information to other users and then photo copied it (this would remove the possibilityof see the removed text) then give it the parent if that successfully argued that they are entitled under the Education Act.

You need to take a step back. If you purchased a solution with a licence fee of say £2000 and you save the equivalent of £6000 in working hours. That solution would be better than implementing a solution for £0 and only saving £2500 in time saved.

I do think it is a case of not understanding the benefits for SIF, as you are seeing only the technical side and not the removal of administrative burden from the school which will out weigh the cost. You wouldn't need to join SIF to purchase SIF based products. There are multi use agents which can interface with a variety of database systems that you can configure with a set of business rules. The cost for a MIS agent, Access to a ZIS, Multiple use Agent would be under £1000~ which is a heck of a lot less than capita charge. You are still seeing interoperability with a MIS as a 1-1 relationship, the MIS doesn't hold all the information about a student in the school. Data is stored in multiple systems like MIS, cashless catering, Active Directory etc. The key to interoperability to having all these systems talking the same language (SIF) so when data charges in one system is updated in another and when you need all the information for a student you can get instead of have to go to each system and export it and then merge all the data together.

Please can you give examples of the type of applications? If a student joins the school and is FSm and SEN, the schools would want to submit that information as soon as possible to get the additional funding for the pupil premium. That task of submission can be automated. For example schools will want up to date information submitted for FSM as this will effect the pupil premium. SIF supports client certificate authentication over SSL. SIF supports targeted event. ie this allows data to move from school a to school b without going to school c or schools d if they are all on the same zone.

I presume that you have heard about Merlin? All the accounts are provisioned via SIF.

Really?? I would beg to differ as were have developed SIF based applications. As for the SIF infrastructure there are services available to host the infrastructure off site if your LA or RBC doesn't have the SIF infrastructure in place. Why don't you ask the 2500 schools in the swgfl, af the future is here an now.

I mentioned the use of SIF (Page 3/4) to remove the need to write a whole application in one go plus allow schools to run parallel systems to make sure the application works correctly. SIF allows data to be moved between applications. An application can have SIF support builtin or to can be a third-party product. The biggest advantage of SIF is data's entered once and used many times. You update the data in one systems and the new information to updates on 1 or more application connected via SIF.

You currently have three options, Run the whole Moodle sIte over SSL Run sections of the Moodle sIte over SSL Not Run any part of moodle over SSL You are currently on option 3 and it would be advisable to be at option 2. This is because you are currently sending login details in clear text. If you turned SSL on in moodle it would only apply to the login section of the site. To have other sections run over SSL you will need a few .htacces file to force SSL or the plugin might already support it. It would be inadvisable to run the the smb web block over http as anyone can read the contents if they are unencrypted.

@edutech4schools The driver for a VLE and Parental Engagment is now coming from OFSTED. Under the new framework a school wont be able to achieve outstanding without having a vle at the centre of their students learning and if they dont engage with parents. If you are using uniservity (I have used it), moodle is a step up and far more flexible.
